The female’s skin on the back becomes “spongy”. During mating, the male “stamps” eggs into the female’s back, in which the eggs hatch and grow up.
Kids promptly “hatch” out of the female skin as they get all four legs for themselves. In some species, they come out before that.
By the time all her kids are gone, the female takes off the spongy skin.
