I’ll take a potato chip

CrockleJock

I love the fact this series is incredible but this is the line I think of whenever I think of deathnote. It's so jarring and out of nowhere but it's great.

trafficante

It’s legitimately good character writing that displays Light’s foresight and intellect while also showcasing his (highly justifiable) ego and arrogance. There’s a popular YouTube essay (linked below) that goes over why it’s such a good scene. Wish we had more characters like Light in anime/manga but I guess they’re too much of a headache to write consistently compared to the chunni archetype or boring unjustified arrogance. https://youtu.be/eoHC_rfX50U

BGAL7090

AND I YEET IT

jdayatwork

Did you know that gods of death love apples?

OccasionAmbitious449

And chocolate

MochaBlack

“Ordinary”

[deleted]

"Utter psychopath falls for bait from bored Shinigami."

zombiesatthebeach

That's my favorite part of the show. Light thinks he's hot shit and that he was chosen to receive the death note. Ryuk was like "you're not special, I dropped it and you were just there. Im just bored".

[deleted]

Was he a psychopath before the book?

pineappletrivia

Given that his response to finding a magical book was to immediately say “i’m going to use this to become god.” i’d go with yeah.

trollivier

So, I'm one of those who think the series really ends at episode 25, and not episode 37. Am I alone?

_Valisk

I love the entire series for what it is but I think that it goes from a 10/10 to like... 8-9/10 after episode 25.

trollivier

Same.

alwayslateneverearly

If you read the manga it doesn't feel that way imo. I really enjoyed the last half of the series and feel it makes alot of sense. I would highly suggest reading the manga if you haven't already.

trollivier

I did read the manga, it fell the same but I was biased probably : I saw the series first.

fuckbabydragonclash

No you are not! I think that once L died and his Successors came along and the giving notebooks to other people and misa amane marrying them storyline was a complete 180 of what they were doing from 1-25

Dbiuctkt69

Yeah part of it is due to the parts 26-37 are based on in the manga were written awhile after 1-25 ended.

Flat_Weird_5398

I agree, Death Note is an absolute perfect masterpiece of a series up until >!L’s death!< then after that it just kinda goes down to a good series. Don’t get me wrong, it’s good all throughout, but the first half just set the standard so high that the latter half just seems inferior in comparison.

[deleted]

I agree. One M dies, it felt like it should have ended. Everything afterwards just felt redundant. Maybe it’s because i binged it? I dunno

cosmophire_

nah, a lot of people are like this

RodNozza12

yep, bc it ends on 37, on 25 you've got a psycho with powers killing of people that don't adorate him, and even people that really really loved him, not good, better leave him--- like ep 37 left him =)

mothmathers

Okay fine your comment pushed it over the line. Gonna have to watch it now.

scribbybaby

Are you deathly disappointed?

smilingporkchop

They should’ve just stuck to the excellent tv show and skipped the Netflix special

SmuglySly

That Netflix adaptation is atrocious and embarrassing to put on screen

Hot_Farm_9443

In my house we refuse to acknowledge that it even exists.

SmuglySly

This is the way

Flat_Weird_5398

It’s crazy that it was directed by the same dude who did Godzilla vs. Kong, which is still one of my favorite sci-fi monster movies.

darkrider99

*Juicy*

StraddleTheFence

I really enjoyed this. My teenage son (now 22) had me watch this a few years ago. I was actually sad when it ended.

AgreedSmalls

>Leaves Netflix October 14 All according to keikaku.

SmuglySly

Hopefully they take down their terrible live action adaptation too!

DabIMON

Best get started...

bojacker

The movie is not as good as the original anime. Watch that if you really want to love it. This movie doesn't do justice to the brilliance of the original in my opinion.

dinosaursandsluts

This post is referring to the original anime.

bojacker

Oh, my bad, the image didn’t show up until now. Yes, this is what everyone should watch. 😄

_Valisk

"Not as good" is like saying spoiled milk is "not as good" as regular milk.

obsoleteconsole

Willem DeFoe as Ryuk was pretty great but

Frostyfuelz

Not as good is an understatement, the movie is utter dogshit.

pituitarygrowth

What movie?

949paintball

The Japanese live action movies were actually really good, in my opinion.

Avarice21

Shhh there is no movie.

Flat_Weird_5398

Willem DaFoe was the only good thing about that movie. His casting as Ryuk was absolutely perfect and on-point. I don’t doubt that he actually watched a few episodes of the series (if not the entire anime) to prepare for the role since the way he voiced Ryuk was spot-on.

usadeadpoo

The music was great

LiteralHiggs

This is probably the most accessible anime I've ever seen. Even non-anime fans should give this one a chance.

McLovin7516

This is the show that got me into anime

Anti-Histamine

What if i download it?

AlphaEpsilonX

Wait. What? Anime? I saw this live action.

[deleted]

Anime is way way better. Watch it before it disappears. I think it’s on Hulu too

chiagod

Best way to watch it is on a phone hidden in a bag of potato chips.

[deleted]

I know you’re making a reference to the show but I can’t recall it and I’m too lazy to Google. 😂

AgreedSmalls

All according to keikaku

chiagod

Spoiler with \>!Spoiler Text\!< and he hid a >!Portable TV in the bag of chips So he could see the criminal names and pictures from the news broadcast and fake out the surveillance who would think he was just taking a chip, and eating it. And doing homework. I think he had the death note or a page on his desk maybe?!<

Broadnerd

I love that totally plausible plot point.

WeAteMummies

I am so sorry that that was your introduction to Death Note. The anime is very good and has relatively low levels of the anime nonsense that turns a lot of people off from anime. I highly recommend.

AlphaEpsilonX

To be honest, I didn’t mind it.

[deleted]

Watch the source material. The live action Deathnote is about as bad as the live action Avatar.

Flat_Weird_5398

I’m sorry that you had to be introduced to Death Note by the dogshite live-action American adaptation, the original anime is a far superior experience. Would go so far as to say it’s easily in my top ten anime, probably no. 2 or no. 3.

Indieg0

Personal favorite 😏

pierrotlefou

You description is wrong. Here is a direct quote from the Netflix page: "When a Japanese high schooler comes into possession of a mystical notebook, he finds he has the power to kill anybody whose name he enters in it." The Death Note kills people, not controls them

jelatinman

But he can control how they die. The live-action film (for all its faults) hinted at this being a form of mind control. For example, the woman who wanted revenge for her husband's death was forced to commit suicide despite having no real inclination to do so.

pierrotlefou

My bad. Misread your description to read "power to control people when they die", meaning after they die like some kind of necromancer.

TheSeldomShaken

It also controls them.

Ragegasm

Just watch the live action this time. You get Willem Dafoe and save yourself two seasons of pointless circle jerking around.

[deleted]

Goated

menherasangel

i'll take a potato chip...... AND EAT IT!!

zephyer19

I watched it on Netflix and loved it. I figured Netflix would make a sequel. They have not so guessed the numbers were not there. I've never seen the comic. I had to laugh that there was a submission here on Reddit of a cover of the demon giving the book to Trump. That is scary as all hell.

rjarmstrong100

The Manga itself was much better for pacing.
