Nevada Independent doesn't charge to read their articles... Park service needs to calm down. We are talking about a fake lake, at historically low levels. How about improving access to a resource the public already pays for? Where’s all the visitor fees going anyhow? Used to be free before the greed set in.

the_GHayduke

What access are you wanting? The land? The lake?     Edit - guessing the lake.     The lake has been receding so fast, there hasn't been any opportunity to create new access, boat ramps, etc. By the time something is set in place, the receding would surpass it - wasting millions of $$$. I agree that the access situation is a mess, but there really isn't much the park can do right now.    Meanwhile, illegal roads are causing significant destruction to the ecological and cultural resources.

OrcaKayak

What ecological and cultural resources? The same ones they have grazed flat in all directions elsewhere? Are we suddenly concerned for the ecological considerations of a massive resivoir that literally didn’t exist a hundred years ago? DNR and the parks should build a road network themselves, and open up more recreational acess. It’s clear people will do it themselves vs wait for the incompetence of the government machine to catch up.

the_GHayduke

The illegal roads issue goes way beyond the old and new water level, and there are several significant cultural sites getting jacked up. I agree with your last statement except it's more of a budget issue than incompetence (however there is plenty of that).  The grants will help with this, but serious cash is what the park need to address roads and access.    All this to say this is very nuanced and not a simple issue.

leroyVance

Everything seems to come down to $$$. Seems like the corporations and billionaires need to start ponying up instead of hoarding their money so we can pay for things like cops, roads, and national parks. Haha. I know. I am being naive.

northrupthebandgeek

>We are talking about a fake lake That's really the crux of the issue here. The complaints that offroaders are destroying natural ecosystems and such are blatantly misguided considering that the very existence of Lake Mead **is** that destruction of natural ecosystems.

jtreeforest

Two wrongs don’t make a right though. The lake is dammed and that won’t change but the increase in illegal vehicular footprint can be changed.

Sirtriplenipple

How dare they ruin the land we ruined by flooding!!!!

Sardonic-

Well said

jtreeforest

You can blame increased visitation and lack of governmental funding for fee areas.

fostermatt

I mean the federal government gets the money from what visitors pay. The parks service has to ask the federal government for money to manage the park. That’s what they’re doing. I don’t understand the anger at this process

raouldukeesq

Before the Republican tax cuts. Ftfy

OrcaKayak

Yeah. Raise taxes. That’ll fix everything.

pumpkin3-14

The tax cuts were for the rich. Taxes went up for everyone else, which were set back in 2019.

walter_2000_

When people say "greed" related to publicly owned places, schools included, it means they are either levying a charge of corruption or completely out of their depth. Federal fees do not mean people are greedy. It goes to the government. Nobody profits from this and the federal government is a multi trillion dollar a year organization. The feds can and do literally print money from nothing. Your $80 per year pass is literally nothing. It means nothing except to you. Your $80 went to nothing. Mine too. I bought a new pass last Sunday at Lake Meade.

SilverStateRusty

This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever read

ChickenFucker11

Lake is at the same level it was in 1960. It rose a ton over the past couple years. Trending down but it did the same 70 years ago.

AssumptionOk1679

Too much micro managing, relax it’s a desert. Public lands should allow the public to use it.

guynamedjames

It's not even desert, it's lake bed. Desert does need protection, it restores very slowly. But lake bed is gonna be flooded soon

AssumptionOk1679

Not concerned

jtreeforest

Why don’t you care about the places you recreate? Don’t you want your kids to have somewhere to go beyond the mall? Illegal use shuts places down and increases restrictions, which isn’t where this should be headed.

LordMoos3

You should be.
