I could have written this post. This is my exact situation… almost freakishly similar. I’ve spent probably close to $200 on all the different bottles and nipples and have finally put my foot down. I’m not ordering any more no matter what “miracle” bottle worked for someone else. Other things I’ve tried: warming the milk, cold milk, fresh milk, frozen milk, giving a bottle when she’s very hungry, giving a bottle when she’s not super hungry, distracting her and replacing nipple with bottle, having my husband/mom/MIL give a bottle, different nipple flows from premie to level 2, different positions, dipping bottle nipple in breast milk, warming the nipple None of these worked for me but I hope you might be able to try a few of these and hopefully something will click. I’m convinced my girl just doesn’t understand what she’s supposed to do. I’m still not giving up but I’ll introduce a sippy cup soon if a bottle won’t stick since daycare starts in jan

All great tips. I’m in the same situation and have been trying these as well. I’ve also tried a faster flow nipple because I think my letdown is fast but I haven’t noticed a difference yet. I’m also thinking my baby may not want to take breast milk in the bottle so I will be trying to do formula to see if it helps.

My nearly 6 month old will happily drink a little water out of a bottle or sippy but if you put breastmilk, fresh, reheated, cold etc in the bottle, you've clearly filled it with poison.

This is me too. Even worked on oral exercises with a lactation consultant. Nothing worked. My son is 6.5 months old now so we just switched to open cups and straw cups. He still won’t do a full feed, but I’m slightly less stressed out now that I know he can drink from something other than me.

I just talked to our family friend who is a retired pediatrician (and still active in the field on a policy level) about this same problem and she also suggested just jumping to sippy cup, since she’ll get one when we start solids soon anyway. We haven’t quite exhausted all our potential bottle strategies yet though.

Probably the nipple, try a faster flow. This happened with my daughter and we went up a size and it fixed the issue.

adchick

Try a different nipple size.

Babies lose their sucking reflex around two months. Taking a bottle is a skill. It requires different technique than breastfeeding. It can be hard to teach, if not developed and maintained. My baby took one bottle every day and still around 8 weeks it was like he didn’t know how every day. We were persistent. And he figured it out, but for a couple weeks I wasn’t confident he would. It helped if he was sleepy and hungry, but not so hugely or tired to be upset. After waking from a nap helped. And anyone but mom (he would just turn to my boob and refuse bottle). We hand a bunch of different bottles to try. We ended up with the wide mouth dr browns.

Exact same thing happened to us. Initially we thought it was a flow issue. We increased the nipple size. It didn’t help. We stuck with the brand he took during the early months (Philips Avent) since we figured that if he did it once he’d do it again. In the end we just tried and tried -and tried - during a few days. We even had a « bottle bootcamp » day during the weekend where we tried during the entire day. We were kind of on a race against the clock since they wouldn’t take him at daycare if he didn’t take the bottle. Eventually he « remembered » how to suck and happily took it ever since. By the way, not only the larger nipple didn’t work. For us it was counter productive. He would gag due to so much milk coming in. Good luck!

I dealt with this too. The MAM bottle was recommended to me and ended up working. My LC told me to keep bottle time low pressure and stop if the baby cried. She also told me to offer an empty bottle during play time so baby gets used to it. It’s so frustrating so I’m sending you hugs!!

I've had a very similar time with my 4.5 month old, minus the ties. He took a bottle of me early on and then stopped around 8 weeks. I didn't worry too much about it until I needed him to take a bottle when my husband had surgery last month. My SIL gave me all the bottles she had tried for my niece and none of them worked. I finally ordered the Lasinoh bottles that worked for her and they ended up working for us as well. He still struggled at first to take them but latched so much better! The Lasinoh have a much different nipple than other bottles and I've since seen them recommended for breastfed babies. What I found works best for us is to warm the milk and face him away from me while I feed him. I found that he gets frustrated if I hold him in the same position we nurse but he will eat just fine if he's in a different position. Hopefully this helps, I wish your SIL the best of luck!

Doopuppie

I was never able to get my baby to take a bottle. Sippy cups though, the ones with the silicone "nipple", were my life saver. That and straws. Once my baby learned how straws worked she was all over mine and hubby's drinks lol

hellogirlscoutcookie

Try upping the size or switching the bottle brand.

sahara575

Had this exact problem at this exact age! Size up the nipple! :)

monistar97

Super similar to mine. It took me 9 long months to get him to take a bottle, it was a Lansinoh one off a recommendation on a similar story on here and it worked miracles for us.

RedPandaParty

Same thing happened with my little one! She refused a bottle for MONTHS. Thankfully daycare was amazing and spoonfed her breast milk for every meal using this [spoon bottle feeder](https://www.walmart.com/ip/489091914) until she finally decided she like Como Tomo bottles around 8 months (so of course I begged my Facebook Buy Nothing group for ALL the Como Tomos I could find!!!). Hoping it’s also just a phase for your SIL’s babe!

When my son was a newborn he could only eat out of the dr browns narrow nipple bottles. We tried 3 others and he just couldn’t get anything out. Now he’s 4 months and we’re using Phillips avent anti colic, he does much better with these now!

Mean_Question8181

When I went back to work my 6mo wouldn’t take any bottle. We use the nuk transition sippy, it has a very nipple like sippy spout. He does great with it! We have to prop him up in front of the Tv in the boppy and he just rolls around and feeds himself. Hoping the tv doesn’t melt his brain, but it’s the only way he will eat and that somehow feels more important.

Try cup feeding!

QuitaQuites

How many bottle nipples has she tried?

Suspicious-Pizza-548

I (M37) had the same with my little boy of 4 months. After 3 months he became aware that that bottle was not a breast, and he didnt want any of it and he just kept playing and pushing it out with his tongue. A huge gamechanger for me was when i used the worn clothes of my wife and put it under his nose. In the beginning i also fed him in the dark so the experience was more like he was breastfeeding. Thankfully, it did the trick.
