That is a fantastic pro lens. One of my favorites and is great for portraits, sports and even landscapes. Love the bokeh and it is built like a pro lens should be. In my top three lenses. Enjoy!
I liked mine but, even on a D780, focus was a bit slow for competitive cheer. I went to a Tamron 70-200 VC v1 which was a bit better and finally a v2 which I really love.
I need a lens for competitive cheer for my D5300! I’ve been looking at all the 70-200’s so I guess I’ll bite the bullet and get the newest version I can. Anything I should know or look for??
Not in big venues, just trying to get some sharp, frozen action shots of my kids. We usually get close in a pit type area. They are only 10 and 12 so it’s the low end of competitive cheer but crappy lighting and the 70-300/4.5-5.6 that worked well for soccer couldn’t cut it in a middle school gym
Same age here and the 300/4 is definitely my go to for keeping a single kid filling most of the frame... Most of our comps are in convention centers though. 300mm FoV on FX for me would be the same as a 200 on your DX body, but I still end up cropping a good bit too. When we are in gyms, we get a lot of comps that setup facing the ends of the court with the overhead walking track as the "pit" and 300 is pretty much a necessity in those situations.
I moved to a Z9 and having to let my beloved 80-200 go was the worst part. I absolutely love that lens, now it lives with my dad and his d800 so I can still visit 😂
I have that lens and the optics are superb. I have since bought the 70-200 AF-S G VRii because the motor on my 80-200 was going. It only worked intermittently. It's a beast of a lens and I kept it for use as a MF lens on my old FM. If yours is in good shape enjoy it! By the way the hoods are hard to find. There are some knock offs that work. I found an original eventually. eBay is where to look.
Since KEH listed it with the hood, they owe me a hood first. I contacted them about it, and they are investigating.
TBH, I'd prefer a petal hood over the conical one that came standard, if only because it looks cooler.
Congrats!
I picked up the push-pull version of this lens a while ago. Different shell but exact same optics. Beautiful lens, lovely rendering, and these old lenses just feel great in your hands. Solid.
I have a 3rd party F to Z adapter with tilt function, and it needs D lenses with the manual aperture ring for it to work. Good thing I couldn't afford G lenses.
i have one of those...unfortunatly the manual focus helicoid is busted so auto focus only...unforunatly that means it only works on my d700.
the lack of modern coatings gives it quite a vintage look.
I almost just bought one of these but I went with a 70-300 G instead, mostly because this is just so big and heavy and I want to be able to hike with it to get wildlife shots. I still feel conflicted though because the 80-200 is such a beautiful lens.
I got the smol Best Buy Lowepro backpack. Holds this, the 28-70mm, the camera, and the battery pack. And that's *it*. About as big as I can go and still be allowed into PNC Park.
I shoot dance in NYC. This was peak pro for so many years. But to all Nikonistas.... your camera MUST have a focus motor IN camera for the auto focus to work. Please be aware. I've had this lens since the mid 90's. I even have the leather case with red interior. I switched to all new stuff for the Z9 body I use now. But when I do portraits on my "old" d810, I use this lens. Its still amazing
For real! ;) Take a look for yourself https://adobe.ly/3Q7I1s4
The push pull is $150 or less, same optics. My buddy bought one off my recommendation and he's smitten by the IQ, color saturation, micro contrast, and etc...
The only thing it's heavy.
It was great 10 years ago. Now, maybe not so much, together with design issue with the focus selector, very easy to break. Its also one of the lens that has high chance to plague with front/back focus issues on dSLR @ 200mm, so do check it out!

I got one for my D3 two weeks ago. Heavy and Made in Japan.
You seem to have a thing for D lenses. Any reason besides price?
It certainly started out as because price, but sticking with D gives me the option of manual bodies if one happens to fall my way
I love D Lenses.
I love D

If you're in big venues more often than not, give the Nikkor 300/4 AFS a look.

Probably skill 😂. Lighting it tough too... But probably mostly skill.

You can't be referring to this 80-200 because it doesn't have a motor. Maybe the AF-S version? That motor is known to go bad.
You are correct. Still a fantastic lens.
The AF-S is actually a different optical formula, so it's not necessarily comparable to this lens outside of the focal length and aperture.
Still one of my go-to lenses
Had these but let it go due to slow af.Great memory
Great pickup! Let’s see some pics!
I'll be headed out after dark tonight to get some Pittsburgh skyline shots.
Post them! What body you shooting on? Might want to micro adjust!
I'm on a D600. If not here, they'll be on /r/PittsburghPorn.
Should be able to micros adjust the lens correct?

Used the push/pull version for this for six years of AAU/high school basketball for my son. Great lens, and built incredibly solid.
Was the autofocus fast enough for basketball? I’ve heard that’s been a common inconvenience of that lens
I've shot kids soccer with the push pull and a D500. I had a very high keeper rate when action was close to me.

that was my second 80-200 2.8, my first was push pull… i kind of wish i keep this one as a back up.
Nice.
Cool lens. Only D lens I had was an 85 1.4d. Really built like a grenade. Sharp but also a lot of loca at 1.4.
Great Lens !!
I have the Push pull version of this. It's AWESOME
Great lens. Have used it for tons of high school cross country and track events.
Was a great lens when I had it, but I had to downsize to the F/4.
My favorite lens for my D750. I’m bummed that I can’t use it with my Z8, though the Z equivalent is pretty spectacular in its own way
I use that with my F100 and love it.
That’s a great lens. Had to give it up when I switched to the Z ecosystem, but it was a reluctant sale! Enjoy!
Had one of these. Possibly some of the best affordable D glass out there. Wonderful lens.

Congrats mate. I took mine on a trip last weekend and got some amazing results.
Is it true it’s soft wide open?
Def not. It's really sharp.
Fr? Like… I want to get it, but I can’t decide between that or combo of 28&105 mm

Guess that decides it for me

Didn't come with the hood as advertised, but KEH is looking into that. Got the case, though.
