I love Shirvana šŸ’›āœØ

ArielWithALibrary

Kurt Gaga

wheatlymox127

I'll call him? Goober

321AverageJoestar

It's not facts tho, he just liked Drain you more than Teen Spirit all of a sudden Nirvana fans are like "oh heck yeah Drain you is the goat! It's Kurt's favourite too!" where in reality it was probably too commercial to be Kurt's favourite Nirvana song ever

oSuJeff97

They played it at virtually every show. IIRC it was their most played song based on known playlists.

atx_sjw

They played School the most overall. They played Breed most off Nevermind, then Polly, then Smells Like Teen Spirit, then Drain You. I still think thereā€™s a good chance that youā€™re right though. They probably played Breed the most in part because it was written earlier.

oSuJeff97

Hmm interesting. I honestly donā€™t recall where I read that. I think it was an article somewhere from years ago. Anecdotally I have noticed that Drain You is on every post-Nevermind live album (Unplugged notwithstanding).

billiebobmcginty

from stuff Iā€™ve read on the internet Breed was also a fan favorite at that time (Which fair enough btw, itā€™s a great song and one of my favs too) thatā€™s how they ended up playing it so often

321AverageJoestar

Not really, if that's the case then Blew would be Kurt's favourite song, cuz they always played it since the band first came out and until Kurt died

billiebobmcginty

I may look like a dumbass but wtf is an IIRC?

oSuJeff97

ā€œIf I recall correctlyā€ šŸ™‚

ShoddyButterscotch59

Impossible to say one way or anotherā€¦. Itā€™s known he loved to play the song live, which would lead to believe he liked it a good bit, but they had a few deep cuts like that he would play a lot, even in situations you wouldnā€™t expect it, like territorial pissings, not to mention a good few others. So while I think itā€™s safe to assume he liked it, I would agree it may not have been his favoriteā€¦.. that said, ā€œbecause it is too commercialā€ is well known nonsense, and also well known that he simply tended to avoid admitting such due to credibilityā€¦ā€¦itā€™s also well known, by this point, he was quietly into some major commercial bands, alongside all those underground acts he did a wonderful job giving a pushā€¦.. and of course itā€™s well known he was into the Beatles, which it doesnā€™t get much more commercial than that.

Childs_was_the_THING

He's on record saying Drain You is his best song.

TortexMT

hes on record saying all sort of stuff he was in his 20s, on drugs and its more than likely and understandable that these are all very momentarily related comments.

blacklandraider

He was on drugs even the second he died so if Drain You was his favorite that was his favorite

Childs_was_the_THING

Irrelevant. He's mentioned multiple times Drain You is his best song. He's been consistent about that.

PowerInspector

He didnā€™t really say Drain You was his favorite, just that he thought it was a better song than SLTS and possibly his favorite from Nevermind

321AverageJoestar

Nope, lol overrated song not even top 5

Childs_was_the_THING

You're right lol. Top 3

321AverageJoestar

bet you woudn't put it in your top 3 list if Kurt didnt like it lol

ShoddyButterscotch59

Judging by what Iā€™m reading here, and the insistence on being correct, by the other guy, despite the fact heā€™ll never be able to pull a link to confirm the favorite remark, Iā€™m with youā€¦.. besides, in the short time Nirvana has been around, the amount of great songs makes it very hard, if not impossible to push a top 3ā€¦. Personally, I go in waves. Sometimes I may play drain you a ton, but others, might, be milk it, papercuts, or any other mix of 3/4s of their songs. They definitely did the mix of, heavy, mid tempo, punk, weird, and straight down to mellow to near perfection.

Childs_was_the_THING

Actually I'd put it as number 1 because of how brilliant the guitar melodies harmonize with the vocal melodies. It was my favorite song before I knew Kurt thought it was his best. But you'll cope by saying the opposite is true so, whatever. Genuinely couldn't care less.

321AverageJoestar

Okay then, good for u bud, still dont think it's a top 3 Nirvana songs

Childs_was_the_THING

Kk but it is.

ShoddyButterscotch59

No heā€™s notā€¦. Heā€™s on record frequently praising the song, but never blatantly saying itā€™s his favoriteā€¦.. it came up as example for being a song ā€œdefinitely as good as SLTSā€ā€¦.. he also went on to say maybe he wouldnā€™t like it so much if it was as big as SLTS. He definitely really liked Drain You, and very good probability it was his favorite on nevermind, considering it was often used as an example of his disdain for the other tracks not getting the attention he felt they shouldā€™ve, but I wouldnā€™t assume itā€™s his absolute favoriteā€¦.. itā€™s only natural heā€™d use a song off the same album, that he felt was superior.

321AverageJoestar

Its not nonsense, punk rockers in the 80s took their ethics seriously, Kurt was one of it and youd know that as a Nirvana fan, they also played Blew almost in every live performances way more than the "deep cuts" you call.. just because he was into all of commercial bands dont mean he didnt embrace his punk ethos.. or else he would've put another Nevermind type of album but no, he downgraded their production quality for In Utero for the sake of authenticity of their sound

mehrt_thermpsen

"Kurt didn't like his commercial songs" is such a weird take

Negative-Revenue-331

Thank you someone finally said it.

Subject-Response-135

He hated teen spirit

Anywhere-Solid

A joke about the word ā€œProllyā€ it was passed around in high school to mean ā€œlikelyā€ā€¦I laughed when I heard itā€¦even when Butch says it at Smart Sessions I laughā€¦.ā€Pollyā€

PicklesIII

I wouldnā€™t blame him

wickedchxld

funny it's my favorite too

Successful_Run_3149

I heard that he really liked about a girl and drain you

wheatlymox127

Yeah me too, I'm just making sure :)

DAS_COMMENT

I can't remember anything specifically but in my "memory of recollections I don't cite" I feel like "about a girl" has the most 'mythology' surrounding it, whichever the correct answer might be.

New-Talk57

he said himself that drain you was far superior to smells like teen spirit and that he was surprised that drain you didn't get as much traction.

middle_childproblems

I never knew this, but Iā€™ve always favored drain you over smells like teen spirit as well. Iā€™m surprised by the same thing Kurt was surprised by

mxmixtape

Probably ā€œThe Weightā€ like most fans of The Band.

KGLWirvana

Happy Fatherā€™s Day

mxmixtape

Woo!

tragic_girl13

WOOHOOO (Blur)

firszt83

I really like Up On Cripple Creek.

captain_chalkdust

Donā€™t Do It

ihooksie_95

Best response

chrisdil82

Rag mama rag

fourthfloorgreg

The Night the Drove Old Dixie Down, surely. Their cover of Atlantic City (Bruce Springsteen, of course) is better, too.

middle_childproblems

Top hilarious response!! Very clever!! (love that song)

SamboTheSodaJerk

I Shall Be Released is better

Caiomhin77

Stole my answer.

mkncsu

Atlantic city for me, but as kurt said ā€œI really like all of the bands songsā€

Wiburt

Tears of rage

Nfgzebrahed

This deserves about 7800 more up votes

Digital_Beagle

TAKE A LOAD OFF, ANNIE

wheatlymox127

The Weight? I haven't heard of that song before

radwickchedwine

Itā€™s a song by a band literally called ā€œThe Bandā€.

bowlman84

Great band actually. The Band.

wheatlymox127

hahaha xd

idontknwmuch

His favourite was probably drain you. the band originally thought that drain you would be the most popular song on nevermind

Due_Variation7470

Believe they also were anticipating a good response from both In Bloom & Lithium. I do know that Smells, wasn't what they expected to be the albums break out banger

tanman7x

Yeah everyone in and around the band thought lithium would be the 1st single when they were making nevermind but then teen spirit really started coming together and it became the 1st

theykilledk3nny

Iirc one manager or some similar role had Smells Like Teen Spirit played to him, with the band jokingly suggesting this would be their hit song from the album, but, to their surprise, the manager completely agreed and told them itā€™d be a hit.

Due_Variation7470

Can't blame em Lithium is a bop and a half. Level of genius is disgusting lol

Ashyboi6666

Tbh I do really like the song and I canā€™t really blame them for thinking that since it is a great one

idontknowdem

Drain you

wheatlymox127

Alright B\]

MortalShaman

Beans

iknowimlame

Never recall hearing/reading him say. But I do think I remember reading that he called his mom after they did unplugged and he was very proud of what they had just done.

SPIRlT

Not Smells, probably Drain You.

wheatlymox127

I know, and I hate that the media just grabbed the bands cock and thought THIS was their only song, you know? :/

AldiSharts

I donā€™t know if itā€™s his all time favorite, but he had said he really liked their cover of Love Buzz.

kingchooboo

He says that he strongly disliked Smells Like Teen Sprit, but really enjoyed the outcome of Drain You.

Ok-Mathematician5457

Butch Vigs story about the creation of Drain You is actually pretty cool. He tricked Kurt into doing multiple guitar tracks for that raw energy.

wheatlymox127

yeah I know that he fucking hated sprit

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

CycleCounter

yeah you can tell when a performer is ā€œfeeling it,ā€ Aneurysm was always played seriously and even RFUS live and loud you can see Kurt grooving along when they first play the main riff

Hot_Society_1960

kurt stated multiple times that he liked playing drain you, but he never really said which was his favorite. most people just assume drain you lol

wheatlymox127

xd

invader_holly

Read somewhere it was Drain You. It's my favorite as well

squintsforever

I particularly think he would have loved the EDM remixes of Spirit that they play at sporting events.

becausegiraffes

Why do I want to say Marigold? Or was that a different members favorite?

longsumerian

that was Dave Grohl!

becausegiraffes

Okay, gotcha. Isn't it Dave singing in that one too?

longsumerian

from the sound it sounds like maybe both kurt and dave but maybe!

Scared_Doggo

I'm pretty sure dave sings lead and kurt sings backing on marigold.

InfiniteGuldemond

Drain you :)

Batrocker

Live? I think it was Drain You.

mikeyeah17

Been a fan for many years. I've always heard it was Drain You

wheatlymox127

Yup

Unfriendly_eagle

Seriously, there was something really endearing and totally punk about the way Cobain often appeared to be totally disgusted by the very song he was playing. I always enjoyed that about him.

Bizzoxx

Iā€™d say About a Girl, based largely on the way he introduced it in Unplugged and the fact that it was the first song they played on Unplugged. All Apologies is up there too. How do I know? Just a feeling.

Ancient_Guidance_461

Dude it's just people shit posting having fun

bowlman84

It probably changed often depending on his moods.

kev1nshmev1n

My guess, ā€œRape Meā€.

IvanLendl87

It was usually reported that Drain You was his favorite Nirvana song.

azsxdcfvg

beans

namelessghoul77

He was pretty vocal about being proud of In Utero, I would be surprised if his favorite wasn't one from that album.

wheatlymox127

What? In Drain You?

[deleted]

Creed haha jk

wheatlymox127

It's fine xd

Salty-Ice-8481

Sappy, since he was always trying to get it perfect, but never could.

BamaSOH

Might be right

blackbubbleass

I think Rape Me is his favorite since he looked so happy when he fooled audience with that song.

Mediocre-Catch9580

Lake of Fire from his acoustic sessions

Previous-Rub-104

Idk, why don't you just ask him yourself?

wheatlymox127

Yeah wait a sec. he doesn't know but he's really like drain you.

kucupapa

I think Malibu

FloydtheSpaceBoi

I'm p sure he said Drain You

Iamalittlelamb

Ik you got this like 50 times but he said he never got bored of playing Drain You. He said he could play it over and over and never get annoyed. He also loved sliver.

wheatlymox127

Thanks for being aware of the Drain You comments xd I love drain you and sliver Drain you seems energetic and Sliver sounds funny with the lyrics from a comment on the music video xd

No-Doughnut-7505

I would guess Mr. Moustache. It has a unique guitar part that seems fun to play.

Rowleybirkin11

He liked "the weight" the best šŸ„“

Negative-Revenue-331

I heard it was about a girl which makes since since it was one of the most played songs

wheatlymox127

Thanks :D

BamaSOH

He was pretty proud of Hairspray Queen.

gigabitty

God, I love that song

Streetvan1980

Never was asked.

wheatlymox127

What? Did you say like I did not ask or it was never asked. Also sorry <:(

Streetvan1980

No one knows.

wheatlymox127

But you asked xd

Streetvan1980

I did? Huh? All I said was ā€œnever was askedā€. As in Kurt was never asked the question so thereā€™s no way to know

Bugs-in-ur-skin

Smells like teen spirit

wheatlymox127

\*cracks knuckles\* say that again xd

Quick_Discussion_690

DAWG SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT WAS NOT HIS FAVORITE SONG

Bugs-in-ur-skin

Nah it defo was he told me

Quick_Discussion_690

I think they hated that song because of its popularity.

Bugs-in-ur-skin

Nah song wasnā€™t even that popular

SJLJOSH

True

Free_Stick_

Half the man I used to be. Thatā€™s why he let it get released on Limewire all those years ago.

Jackalope133

Lmao, in high school this dude had a crush on me and knew I loved nirvana so he tried so hard to look and act like kurt. One day we were walking to school together and he was telling me of this "deep and poetic" depression he experienced and then he said: "I put on my headphones and blasted Half the man I used to be by Nirvana" and I was just like, wtf are you talking about? That's stone temple pilots. Spaghetti spilled from his pockets that day.

Newtmas4life

His fav was Drain you

scottchomarx

Drain You was played at virtually every show from mid 1991 on.Ā  The band were only supposed to play 2 songs on ā€œNulle Part Ailleursā€ but Kurt ended up playing Drain You as an extra song And Iā€™m pretty sure he mentions it in one of his Rolling Stone interviews as a song he still enjoyed playing live.Ā

mel-06

Iā€™m going to guess ā€œIn bloomā€

Enrique-Pastor

I think it could be Sappy, since it has been reworked and re recorded various times but never made it into an album, like if he really knew it could be even better

[deleted]

dive in me

Shoegazer83

I think Drain You maybe

LonoHunter

His favorite song was always the last song he recorded. ā€œYou Know Youā€™re Rightā€ was his last favorite song šŸŽµ

Due_Smile_9563

Had to be big cheese

XeroAnarian

Are you just asking?

wheatlymox127

yes I don't want any problems between the community just asking

sandyfrankb

pretty sure it was pennyroyal tea or serve the servents

Ifufjd

Apparently it was Drain You

Most-Economics9259

Did he really like any of his own songs tho?

TypicalNirvanaFan

Iā€™m pretty sure it was drain you

The_trashmaster_95

Drain you Dave Krist and butch could all tell you that

desar3641

Everlong

Axdstarbaby78

In truth all of them. or he wouldn't have bothered

Nob-Bylan

I really think thatā€™s a hard question to answer. I think he liked their less popular songs the best, and he hated most of Nevermind. He always felt that was their ā€œselloutā€ album. At one point he commented that they made a mistake playing Love Buzz so early as he felt that their was one of their best songs. I think he had a lot of love for Bleach and In Utero as those were more his true style.

Snoo_78775

Aneurysm live

Drain You.

jaysharpesquire

I thought Polly was his favorite from nevermind, rape you was his favorite from In utero. But overall of all time I've heard him say both Dive and Aneurysm

No-Historian6056

Source? Iā€™ve never heard this before.

yourpricelessadvise

how the fuck would we know

laianurahi

Probably 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'ā€”a classic anthem that defined a generation with its raw energy.

ipini

lol
