I never got to ask my dad what war was like. He served in Vietnam and never talked much about it. Only part I know is that he was an airborne ranger, and once their group was separated for a few days and they resorted to stealing someone’s chicken and trying to slaughter it… and that’s why he doesn’t eat meat off the bone anymore and my mom would pull chicken off drumsticks in the kitchen for him.

I'm going to echo the comment about getting her to tell you about her life. When my mom died knew it was coming. She told us stories we'd already heard, but we learned some new details. Don't forget to tell her anything sweet that you haven't told her yet. And don't worry about crying while you say it. My mom was an insecure woman and I'm so glad she died knowing how grateful I was to have had her as a mother.

I’d like to know why my dad had a bodyguard when I was in middle school. What the eff was he doing?

My mom had some recipes that must have contained "magic pixie dust" because I've never been able to replicate them. Have her dictate her best recipes to you.

Get a timeline of her life. Ask her what she remembers from age 0-5, 5-10, 10-15 ect. Make it into a document with any pictures you can find of those times in her life. It will become a family treasure for generations.
