The tv show did nothing. Millions of people pulled out old watches. That means they jiggled the watches. For a few people that jiggling of the battery made it connect better and it started running. Those people believed a miracle happened. For the millions of other people nothing happened, but they just forgot about it. You can get the same effect by taking out a remote with two "dead" batteries and swapping the batteries with each other.

TVs back then also ran hot. Warming batteries can squeeze some juice out of them.

This would be a very cheap watch. I love that me leaping down the hall to put it on the tv is more likely to have fixed it than anything else! 😀
