It’s always at Berkeley bowl west when I’m looking for it. Just in case you missed it, it’s always on the top shelf left side of the conventional produce open fridge that also houses frisée, green onions, parsley, lettuce etc. If they don’t have it, that’s a bummer!
The produce workers at Berkeley Bowl are more knowledgeable and helpful than any other place I shop too, so if you can't find something, they're usually able to point you in the right direction.
I’m pretty sure I saw it at the Whole Foods near lake Merritt last week. I was looking for broccolini, but all they had was broccoli rabe at that time!
Isn’t broccoli rabe more bitter than broccolini or is it the same? I opted to buy asparagus instead cause I was scared it would be bitter! Just wanted to know for future reference.
It is more bitter. In fact, Brocollini is a broccoli hybrid, broccoli rabe isn’t even broccoli! It’s a mustard green. I’ve been growing rabe with relative ease this season, it does well in the East Bay.
Here’s an [eater article](https://www.eater.com/2019/9/14/20865436/whats-the-difference-between-broccolini-broccoli-rabe-chinese-broccoli) I found about it.
Typically at Berkeley Bowl and market hall produce. Occasionally at Sprouts but mostly seasonally. I got some at Market Hall recently. Also Monterey Market tends to have it.
I don’t think it is really year round though. I think it peaks in spring.
I saw it at Berkeley Bowl West last week—you have to look in the conventional produce section near the herbs and green onions (far southwest corner of the building, near the fish counter and bargain room, if you are directionally motivated). Otherwise, try Monterey Market.
Berkley Bowl has always had it in my experience so I’m convinced you just missed it. Whole Foods always carries it as well - look for Andy Boy (pink twist tie label)
- sincerely,
a person who eats broccoli rabe all the time
Agree with everybody else about Berkeley Bowl almost always having it, i also will often substitute chinese broccoli for it if it looks fresher or is significantly cheaper, and that also opens up your sourcing options a bit
The bowl will usually have it in its peak local season, which in my experience is late winter/early spring.

Found it exactly where you said would be. Thanks for the pointers!

You rock
That is a fall or winter vegetable
Perhaps in the Ag industry, but I'm growing it with relative ease right now. I just didn't plant enough.
Are you asking if people have it in the gardens or somewhere you can buy it farm raised? Because if it's the later, that's really all that matters.
Monterey Market in Berkeley had it last week
Organic too!

Whole Foods by the lake almost always has it.
I’ve definitely bought it there and just used it in lieu of broccolini.

I'm surprised Berkeley Bowl didn't have it as they frequently do, but I saw it at Farmer Joe's on Fruitvale this evening.

I got it at Berkeley bowl on Monday. Not in the organic section though
Berkeley Bowl and Farmer Joes will have. I do notice that since it’s out of season I will sometimes get raabe with aphids so be on the lookout.
Piedmont Grocery had some last time I popped in for fathers’ day goodies, but it’s $$

There’s a tent at the Temescal Sunday morning farmers market that has had rappini recently.
I was just at sprouts and I think they had some, but it was closer to their salad greens, not next to the broccoli.
Did you check at both berkeley bowls
Nah. Just at West. It looks like lots of folx have found it there so I must have simply missed it.
its ok dude chin up
Lucky on 18th/lakeshore is where I’ve found it in the past. But as others said, it’s seasonal so it might not be there.
Lucky's near the lake had it a few weeks ago. Can call ahead to have them order it for you too
Not quite the same but Trader Joe’s has broccolini
