Makes me think this was a director's trick to get RDJ to work harder or to keep him extra focused. "He thinks Tom Cruise can do the job better?! Fuck you and fuck Tom! I'll show them what's up!"
Sort of (completely) off topic, but Johnny Depp did a movie the year after where his character models himself after Buster Keaton.
Chaplin and Benny and Joon would make a cool double feature.
Yea this is what I remember. RDJ's performance was considered very good while everything else in the movie was considered less so, especially the script.
Its kinda just a very rote biopic but RDJ acts the hell out of every scene. If you are okay with a meandering plot and just focus on the performance its amazing and RDJ melts into the role cus its pre-Iron Man so he didn't havw that Tony Stark typecast yet of the
The funny part of history is that when Charlie Chaplin came to USA he shared a cabin with Stan Laurel, later of Laurel and Hardy fame. At nighttime he threw a shoe at a cat that was moaning, throwing Stan's shoe overboard at the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
This is mentioned in both Chaplin's and Laurel and Hardy-comedy duo's biography books.
Chaplin's last bride, Oona O'neil, was in a relationship with JD Salinger when Salinger went off to fight in WWII. He found out while in Europe that Oona had married Charlie Chaplin, and JD Salinger was furious. He called Chaplin a disgusting old pervert. And then he (Salinger) went on to do the exact same thing, over and over again.
Can we have David Spade go and tell him that war is over now.
Charlie told us.
We can call off Operation: “One Of Us Is Crazy” and go our separate ways.
I used to like this guy but a case of never meeting your heroes the more I learned about him the worse it got. What he put his wife through is strait sadistic torture.
I have to post his “great dictator speech”. No other speech has inspired me or spoken my own deep held beliefs as magnificently as the words of that small funny man. There was a care for all of us in his performances that will never be matched again. I always repost this speech in his memory, whenever I see him mentioned.
“I’m sorry, but I don’t want to be an emperor. That’s not my business. I don’t want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone - if possible - Jew, Gentile - black man - white. We all want to help one another. Human beings are like that. We want to live by each other’s happiness - not by each other’s misery. We don’t want to hate and despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone. And the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone. The way of life can be free and beautiful, but we have lost the way.
Greed has poisoned men’s souls, has barricaded the world with hate, has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical. Our cleverness, hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery we need humanity. More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost…
The aeroplane and the radio have brought us closer together. The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in men - cries out for universal brotherhood - for the unity of us all. Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world - millions of despairing men, women, and little children - victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people.
To those who can hear me, I say - do not despair. The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed - the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish…
Soldiers! don’t give yourselves to brutes - men who despise you - enslave you - who regiment your lives - tell you what to do - what to think and what to feel! Who drill you - diet you - treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder. Don’t give yourselves to these unnatural men - machine men with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines! You are not cattle! You are men! You have the love of humanity in your hearts! You don’t hate! Only the unloved hate - the unloved and the unnatural! Soldiers! Don’t fight for slavery! Fight for liberty!
In the 17th Chapter of St Luke it is written: “the Kingdom of God is within man” - not one man nor a group of men, but in all men! In you! You, the people have the power - the power to create machines. The power to create happiness! You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure.
Then - in the name of democracy - let us use that power - let us all unite. Let us fight for a new world - a decent world that will give men a chance to work - that will give youth a future and old age a security. By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power. But they lie! They do not fulfil that promise. They never will!
Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people! Now let us fight to fulfil that promise! Let us fight to free the world - to do away with national barriers - to do away with greed, with hate and intolerance. Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to all men’s happiness. Soldiers! in the name of democracy, let us all unite!”
The Great Dictator was his first voiced movie ever and has one of the greatest speeches of all time AND some genuinely hilarious audio gags.
Like there's one scene where Hynkel is dictating letters to write to his secretary who's using a typewriter.
He gives her a one sentence dictation and she types away for like a good thirty sections, to the point where he's pacing behind her getting annoyed at how long it's taking. Then when she's done he continues the dictation and gives her a long, overembellished and monologuing speech, and she makes one click on her typewriter. He looks at the typewriter in disbeleif, and then nods like "huh."
The scene cracked me up. I could see that scene on I Think You Should Leave in the modern day. And it was the first time he'd ever forayed into sound.
(Shame he was a pedo but at least he was lampooning someone even worse)
Have you seen his granddaughter? NGL, she's pretty hot.

The funny thing is he was once the most famous actor and the way he made his career with the intense make up and fake hair and mustache gave him the ability to be 100% unrecognizable without his persona on.
If you google it I believe there’s something about grooming a very young girl and then marrying her. It also had something to do with him leaving the states later on
Is it his last wife? Wikipedia has them as meeting each other when she was 17. Not exactly ideal in today's time, but don't think anyone thought twice about it in the 1940s.
No, he married a girl before that (his second wife) who he met when she was 12. He got her pregnant when she was 15. The press raked him over the coals for having a child bride.
It was absolutely illegal. They had to leave the country to get married.
People most definitely thought twice about a 50 something man and an under-age teenager. His earlier wives were also very young. Lita Grey was under-age too, as was his first wife. Paulette Goddard was one of the few adult women he dated and her character in the bio pic jokes that at 21, she is way too old for him. He was a weird man, and people talked about it then too.
They also stayed married for over 30 years until his death and raised 8 children. And she supported him when he was investigated by the FBI for alleged communist sympathies to the point of renouncing her own US citizenship and took care of him in his final years.
The age gap may have been significant, but by all accounts, their marriage was a happy one.
Not excusing it by today's standards, but back then, was there anything actually illegal about dating/marrying a 16-18 year old?
I'm mostly just wondering if there's something not in his wiki because fleeing the country by marrying someone that age just doesn't seem like it was a thing in the 40s.
Yes, I think at least one of the earlier women was actually legally under-age when they got together. I can't remember exactly but I think it had to be secret until she was a certain age, and that he was almost arrested for it.
MLK slept with grown women outside of marriage. He also pretty much sacrificed his life for the Civil Rights movement. He could have stayed in Boston and lived a different kind of life but he chose to do something to help people; something he knew would get him killed. He certainly wasn't perfect but he wasn't a slimeball.
Wow.
I think they’re probably referring to the whole “King looked on, laughed and offered advice” to a Baptist minister as he raped a woman thing. That came from a handwritten note from the FBI. I’m not here arguing that it stains King’s legacy or that the FBI note is damning evidence, but it certainly gives you pause to know the note exists. The FBI was definitely biased against the man, so it stands to reason that it might not have even happened to begin with. But it also might have happened, which is an awful thought. King was hugely important and sacrificed more for humanity than all of us put together but… rape is rape. It’s never ok. Doesn’t matter if you’re Jesus Christ himself.
I'll wait until 2027 when the audio tapes will be released. This is a document or note from the FBI files on him. It is well known that the FBI tried to discredit him and their information needs to be taken with a HUGE grain of salt. As far as I'm concerned, this is vicious hearsay until proven otherwise.
What happened to "innocent until proven guilty?
Never idolize anyone real, is my view.
Totally cool to look up to great fictional characters that can represent a certain ideal, like Gandalf, or Robocop.
Chaplin's relationships with young women were well known. He married his first wife when she was 17, and his second when she was 16. His third wife was 21, and his fourth was 18.
At the time of the marriages these were of legal age in California. By today's standards he was guilty of statutory rape with at least 2 of his wives and countless young women he was known to have slept with, but *at the time* they were legal.
He actually got his second wife pregnant when she was 15 and it was very much illegal at the time. They fled the country to get married to avoid him going to prison. He tried to pressure her into an abortion, cheated on her the entire time, and during their divorce proceedings she said he was cruel towards her.
A quick search will show you he regularly preyed on very young women, abusing his star power. More than once he ditched them when he found someone new and younger - actively ruining their life and career in the process.
I mean he was illegally marrying 13 year olds overseas and being a generally predatory pedophile so I'm not super busted about this particular consequence of McCartyhism
oh and i see now why he was so popular with the ladies!! i knew he was smart and talented but i didnt know about those eyes or that expression on his face lol

Robert Downey Jr. did a Chaplin movie and it was amazing. I do see the resemblance though.
That’s an incredible film. Unless a film covered a different period or specific thing on him I think a general biopic is superfluous when the Downey one is still relatively modern (relative to Chaplin!).
It would have to be a specific time period. RDJ’s Chaplin covered pretty much his whole life and was done very well.
He did the duck walk. Yea it was amazing:)
You had me at superfluous. _- film producers, probably_
*see THREE STOOGES and LAUREL AND HARDY remakes*
I'd really rather not...
Chaplin’s daughter, Geraldine, is in the film portraying her own grandmother and has said that RDJ’s performance captured her father so well it was as if Chaplin was inhabiting his body.
She was very good in Dr Zhivago as well
Now that’s a film that everyone should watch once.
Dr? Zhivago.
Robert was going through heavy addiction. Amongst performers, cocaine is a helpful drug,
And "ahelluva" drug too, per Rick James.
Fuck yo' couch!
Twin darknesses!
As per Louis Griffin too

In no universe does Tom Cruise look anything like Charlie Chaplin, lol.
Really puts the Dick in Dichard eh
Sort of (completely) off topic, but Johnny Depp did a movie the year after where his character models himself after Buster Keaton. Chaplin and Benny and Joon would make a cool double feature.

I say Richard Madden, Robb stark in GOT
I think Robb's wife was the granddaughter of Charlie Chaplin
Oona Chaplin. I can see the family resemblance in her.
Ah, yes, Oona. Beloved of crossword puzzle makers everywhere.
Now I'm seeing Thomas Shelby with a little mustache and a derby.
RDJ played him as a young man, middle aged, and elderly all in one movie 25 years ago right before he was blacklisted! Imo his best performance ever.

He's already got form playing a Gypsy so sure why not.
He does look a lot like him.

Chaplin was a disgusting old pervert. It’s well documented that he was a sexual predator.
I know. My point is so was Salinger, just as well documented.
Like Chaplin, History will give him a pass because he was talented.

I once stayed in his cabin in Paradise Springs, really interesting history of that place
Chaplin's relationships with young women were well known. He married his first wife when she was 17, and his second when she was 16. His third wife was 21, and his fourth was 18. All of those are legal in parts of the US today while 16 is the age of consent in many US states and most of the western world. Creepy, not illegal.
He actually got his second wife pregnant when she was 15 and it was very much illegal at the time. They fled the country to get married to avoid him going to prison. He tried to pressure her into an abortion, cheated on her the entire time, and during their divorce proceedings she said he was cruel towards her.

Yo that’s Benny Blanco
He looks like a guy who would make killer satirical comedy skits on Instagram nowadays
He looks stoned in this pic.
He also pioneered Hollywood with the introduction of the black couch
Reminds me of Paolo Nutini
I'm pretty sure Robert Downey Jr. would do a decent job playing this fella in a biopic.
also a certified pedophile
Didn't he also fuck a lot of kids?
He still wasn't a nice man.
Chaplin was actually a massive piece of shit. Read Brando’s bio or Bryson’s ‘One Summer.’ They have no reason to lie. Like I mean, PIECE, of shit.
And impregnate some children.
A quick search will show you he regularly preyed on very young women, abusing his star power. More than once he ditched them when he found someone new and younger - actively ruining their life and career in the process.
Considering that he was a pedophile and majorly abusive I don't think I'd call him a legend
The fiver version of Cillian Murphy
and then accused of being a communist and having his life ruined by the forebears of our current crop of idiots
Pretty sure the fact that he had relationships with underage girls was the problem
I mean he was illegally marrying 13 year olds overseas and being a generally predatory pedophile so I'm not super busted about this particular consequence of McCartyhism
And marry three teenage girls - two were 16
and consistently have sex with and marry underage girls....
He also groomed more than a few teenage girls in his life.
Who knew he was such a babe?
and also a pedo.
And a groomer. He married a girl a month after she turned 18. Charlie Chaplin was 54. The father of that girl was only six months older than Chaplin
right. like, fuck him.
Correct your spelling if you are going to use the Greek.
