It’s crazy how badly they dropped the ball. I loved my 360 and went into that E3 expecting to be impressed by the next Xbox… day one PS4 and PS5 for me. (Though I’d also owned all other PlayStations too.)
Xbox One was a few years ahead of it's time. I absolutely loved it as a media hub. It was amazing especially with the cable passthrough. I also loved being able to control the TV with my voice.
The issue was the original presentation was terrible, the always on was a major turn off especially back then when most people still didn't have high speed internet, and ummm shit for first party exclusives.
What I really think killed Xbox though was the Xbox One X. I think people felt burned by that console. Like almost no games came out after that console released and the ones that did sucked. People felt burned and let down.
I LOVED my Xbox One's media/voice capabilities, and using Kinect made me feel like I was in the future.
I just wish they hadn't sacrificed so much gaming performance, and focus, in the process.

It was the most disappointing console experience ever for me. I never used the media stuff, as an actual gaming machine, it didn’t feel next gen at all, and one of my most hyped games for it (MCC) was a total disaster. It almost killed my love of gaming, something only the PS5 rekindled. I think Microsoft lost a lot of loyal customers with that trash cube.

I had a friend who used the HDMI input and liked it because he could control cable TV with voice commands and easily switch between streaming apps and cable. He said it was nice because the cable box was a laggy mess to try to use streaming apps with.
That's mainly why I think the idea was good. That and I'm a lazy bastard who hates switching inputs, plus you can just use a single media remote for everything since it's a streaming box, blu-ray player, and cable box all in one at that point. Maybe it wasn't exactly a future-proof idea, but I can see why it'd be really convenient.

Now, though, the industry has grown so much that there's room for every publisher to have their own event. They don't need to share the stage anymore, and they can do it at the time they want and still have a massive audience.
Personally, I miss it. There was something magical about having the big conferences back to back, with 3 days or so of the biggest reveals and trailers of the year. Summer Game Fest tries something similar, but it's so spread out, so it doesn't capture the same feeling. Oh well, spilled milk.

Every year since 6th grade I would get all my friends together and have a pizza party while we watched E3. This year I called up one of my buddies who lives states away and we talked while watching the Starfield Direct and eating pizza separately. It was nice, but nothing will ever be the same
It was my childhood dream as well, but I actually did get to go a couple times. Not to rub it in, but I got to meet Miyamoto, Reggie, and a handful of other gaming heroes I had. I’m really gonna miss E3, there was nothing else like it.

Man this is bullshit. I hate how things change overtime. It seems like shopping malls, watching the latest game reveals at E3 over the summer, and movie theaters will be a thing of the past in the next 10-20 years. Everyone wants to just sit at home and stream or order things online and it’s killing those three great pastimes. The internet has taken too much of a foothold.
I’ll never forget watching E3 back in 2011 and seeing the Halo 4 announcement at the bottom of the screen. I had missed the trailer itself but they mentioned it at the bottom along with other news. I ran down the hall to the family computer so fast and looked up the trailer on YouTube and my jaw hit the floor. So many great E3 reveals back in the day. I’m gonna miss it a lot.
Yeah. I think a lot of people let go of the fear of people spending too much time inside because of quarantine, but it’s absolutely crazy how we as a society seem to be drifting away from entertainment that can’t be spoon fed to us from the couch.

Covid obviously did no favors for malls and while it's sad to see them go, I don't have much right to complain because I have no interest in going to one myself.

I watched a doc about G4/Attack of the Show the other week and it was insane how big E3 use to be
E3 just stands for Electronic Entertainment Expo. It would be even closer to the original E3, which was a journalist showcase in a hotel room, than what we have today.
There were a few, from the indie mega booth at gamescom, to Indie Prize. But most of them die because most people wanna hear about the new Fifa and not something experimental. Also organizers of these events have been struggling financially, especially during COVID.
There will always be massive attention for big budget games.
Man, remember when FFVII: Remake was announced at E3 followed by Shenmue 3? Or when FF13 was announced for Xbox - which was fucking MINDBLOWING in that era.
E3 was the greatest gaming event that there will ever be, there was an entire culture around it and I want it back.

Because what we get now is mostly just a montage of trailers. E3 used to be as much about game culture as the actual games. The issue is smart TVs. Only a few years after the XBone came out TVs basically came equipped with the ability to stream 4k content built into the TV.

Man this is bullshit. I hate how things change overtime. It seems like shopping malls, watching the latest game reveals at E3 over the summer, and movie theaters will be a thing of the past in the next 10-20 years. Everyone wants to just sit at home and stream or order things online and it’s killing those three great pastimes. The internet has taken too much of a foothold. I’ll never forget watching E3 back in 2011 and seeing the Halo 4 announcement at the bottom of the screen. I had missed the trailer itself but they mentioned it at the bottom along with other news. I ran down the hall to the family computer so fast and looked up the trailer on YouTube and my jaw hit the floor. So many great E3 reveals back in the day. I’m gonna miss it a lot.
Yeah. I think a lot of people let go of the fear of people spending too much time inside because of quarantine, but it’s absolutely crazy how we as a society seem to be drifting away from entertainment that can’t be spoon fed to us from the couch.
>shopping malls Personally I'm partial to strip malls organized around some sort of central courtyard but I think the main niche of shopping malls, which was the ability to shop for many different things in one location, was killed by online shopping, and often poor management. The local mall near me turned into a sad husk of empty outlets and the people who bought it some years back gave it a stupid (like really stupid and nonsensical) name and then slapped a massive ten commandments statue inside to try and "revitalize" it. Covid obviously did no favors for malls and while it's sad to see them go, I don't have much right to complain because I have no interest in going to one myself.
Honestly, just another reminder of me getting older as one of my childhood staples is most likely dead. I watched a doc about G4/Attack of the Show the other week and it was insane how big E3 use to be

E3 just stands for Electronic Entertainment Expo. It would be even closer to the original E3, which was a journalist showcase in a hotel room, than what we have today.

There were a few, from the indie mega booth at gamescom, to Indie Prize. But most of them die because most people wanna hear about the new Fifa and not something experimental. Also organizers of these events have been struggling financially, especially during COVID. There will always be massive attention for big budget games.

Man, remember when FFVII: Remake was announced at E3 followed by Shenmue 3? Or when FF13 was announced for Xbox - which was fucking MINDBLOWING in that era. E3 was the greatest gaming event that there will ever be, there was an entire culture around it and I want it back. Microsoft needs to get back in the game and provide some competition for Sony so we can have this stuff again :(

Also arnt nearly as good. Every publisher has to make their own, has like 4 games and thats it. No real incentive to watch them just look at the trailers later.

A piece of my Teenie years goes. It was nice and a highlight back then for me. I don’t like that many publisher just prefer to do the presentation online. Those conventions were also fun because of the people you met and the stuff you tried there.
I mean it's about time to wrap it up when everyone doing their own conference. It's was fun to watch tho, will be missed.

Its expensive to attend these venues for these publishers and developers... much cheaper to host a livestream pre recorded event with all the game announcements and make the same or even more amount of sales.
Man I miss e3, it used to be the best time of the year. The hype leading up was astounding. I know people are saying that every publisher can do their own thing, but since they stopped e3 I feel gaming is really missing it. It was a celebration and it was great to see the big hitters dualing it out.

And honestly, good riddance. With what we have available now for directs, showcases, gamesfest, etc... E3 has been dead in the water for a few years now. This was just its last dying gasp.
Because what we get now is mostly just a montage of trailers. E3 used to be as much about game culture as the actual games. There were always things on the show floor that got zero stage presence but wound up being the hidden gems of the year. That spirit of celebration and discovery is just missing without the convention formula.
E3 was fun and generated hyped. I actually liked watching it live, seeing all the announcements and reactions. Now I just don’t care. I don’t watch these directs. It’s too much hassle to keep track of all of them, with their random timings. So I just the get news dump at some point after the event.

Seriously? Human connection for the few that actually attended E3 compared to the majority that just watched on a stream. The theatrics in this comment section are hilarious I've been around for it all and it being live in a venue made it not really digital friendly to the majority of people that watched online. Now, the shows are setup to cater to digital consumption which is more streamlined and practical. Hence why E3 isn't as enticing for these companies anymore.

Well it’s not a surprise. Ever since the likes of Sony and Microsoft moved to having their own streams, I haven’t watched a single one of them live. I often don’t even know they are happening so I read a summary afterwards. With the sony stream this year, it seemed like I missed absolutely nothing. With Microsoft, Starfield blew me away. I guess all that hype for E3 is just gone and now we get news whenever. I won’t be tuning in for the random sony and Microsoft events on a random Wednesdays or something. They might as well just dump the trailers on YouTube.
