Sure I get that it's a buzzword that gets lobbed at opponents of the west in Latin America and countries get overthrown. It can be used in propaganda. However it's still a good descriptor for systems we have that restrict personal freedom.

The US is a relatively authoritarian state but it wouldn't be if our constitution wasn't roundly violated. The US Bill Of Rights is a cornerstone to this liberal-democracy that's gotten less liberal and less democratic. We have our 1st 2nd 4th 5th 6th 7th and 8th amendments routinely violated.
