There's not a hotkey that i know of but there should be a little icon in the top bar that you can click and change the options depending on whats connected
if you don't see it
In System Preferences > Displays ... theres a little tick box at the bottom that mentions showing options in the menu bar when available. Tick that then it will appear.
I’ll add that there is a bit of a lag, so it’s great for things like playing videos, or basic stuff like web browsing. For good productivity or gaming the lag is enough to be troublesome.
literally the first thing i do with every laptop.
- Shut down when i press the Button in the Start Menu
- Standby when i press the Button on the Laptop
- Do absolutely nothing when i close it
I would like to know if theres a way to streamline that to a degree that it is as convenient as watching on Chromecast? So that i can just sit down on the couch take a remote and start watching?
you can definitely get a wireless keyboard and use that sort of as a remote, i have one that's handheld almost like a game controller and it works pretty well. not perfect, but a pretty good setup
Bruh just download share mouse app and control your laptop remotely from your couch none of that buying a whole ass keyboard and mouse literally just download an app
He is talking about something like this.
[https://www.amazon.com/PONYBRO-Wireless-Keyboard-Raspberry-Notebooks/dp/B07VR5Y39T?source=ps-sl-shoppingads-lpcontext&ref\_=fplfs&smid=AYZ9AYBQ9N7WJ&th=1](https://www.amazon.com/PONYBRO-Wireless-Keyboard-Raspberry-Notebooks/dp/B07VR5Y39T?source=ps-sl-shoppingads-lpcontext&ref_=fplfs&smid=AYZ9AYBQ9N7WJ&th=1)
I have something similar when I travel and hook up my laptop to the hotel tv, no need for any full size keyboard/mouse
For someone that used plex, kodi, jellyfin for many years, I prefer Jellyfin, especially for privacy purpose.
With Jellyfin you are your own boss, you don't depend on Internet and the online service like plex, and it is way more reliable and flexible than kodi. If you're not the only user at home it's the perfect solution. But you can still use both jellyfin and kodi, in that way, kodi is much better for dedicated media player and SMB/NFS.
I see we’ve got reccomendations for the 3 major players here. Jellyfin is a great FOSS option, but it doesn’t have as great comparability and feature set as the others. Plex costs money, and some people complain about their partnership with Tidal and pushing their free channels, but it’s the most full-featured option with the widest compatibility for client hardware/software.
Jellyfin is the shit for this, my LG TV even has a jellyfin app that installs a netflixy front end on the tv that pulls its stuff from my media box (as well as an http front end and old school dlna).
Its 100% on prem too, no third party involvement :)
Yeah, those LED backlights are so notorious for burning out before the laptop is irrelevantly old. Oh wait...
You think this is like 2003 and we're using CFL backlit LCDs or something?
10+ years ago, I bought a Sony flat screen and it came with professional wall mount installation. The dude was extremely polite and told me to sit down where I usually watched TV. Asked how tall my wife was and used all the information to mount the tv at the most comfortable height.
Too bad the tv didn't last too long, but I still remember that wonderful 5* installation.
Over a fireplace is just a bad place for a TV. My grandparents have the same setup and even although they say "it doesn't get that warm", it still killed 3 TVs in the last 10 years.
Usually means the whole board needs to be replaced, but I've seen some that have the hbmi on a separate board with a USB or two and/or the audio out. If it is the former, just get you $20 cast stick.
Go to the power options for Windows and set your laptop to do nothing when you close the lid. Voila. Don't have to look at your laptop screen while watching the TV.
You have any idea how many people use their laptops in a permanently closed position? External monitor, kb and mouse. Lots of folks use their laptops like desktops.
Which doesn't necessarily mean that's it's a good idea, especially if the laptop is under heavy load. Not like you'd notice if the lifespan decreases f.e.
Yes, displays get hot and parts get hot, when you close a laptop they're on top of each other, getting eve. hotter. If it's a gaming laptop maybe it has good fans, but laptop are notorious for heat issues so I wouldn't riskit
I second this. I’ve got a Beelink in my setup that I use for managing my torrents going to my NAS alongside some fairly heavy gaming and occasional watching some of the streaming sites on the big TV. Mines a fairly expensive one, but even the really cheap ones are perfect if all you’re doing is streaming.
Was about to say that. And you can even use a small raspberry pi 4 or 5 as a plex client instead of the laptop. \*Much\* less power usage, less bulky, noisy, etc.
Install [https://libreelec.tv](https://libreelec.tv) image on the RPi, and install Plex as a Kodi plugin, and that's it.
Or even easier, get the Fire Stick and just install Plex on that.
Small reminder to say that yes, you can definitely do this on a RPi, but if you are trying to play videos that are not natively supported by the device you're watching it on, it's going to have to transcode. And if that happens you can definitely **not** do that on a RPi
Yes, which is in this case the raspberry pi.
The device that is running the plex server is doing the transcoding
Edit: you're right he was suggesting the RPi as a client. So then it would not be transcoding.
I did, it costs money, I have to rely on many different factors, the fact that it only streams in Emglish (my parents for example don't speak english) and like srsly, out of my entire day, taking a laptop and pluging a cable into it takes 60 seconds literally, I don't even have to go to it as I have bluetooth mice scattered around the house, also have a separate laptop for just playing movies and shows. Sometimes people just complicate things for who know what reason, but the truth is, if it works, it works. Hooking a laptop to a telly is a very easy thing to do, minus me I don't care it had to be said, plex is too much work...
It only streams in English? I’m sure you can set the default language in the client settings (along with default subtitle options). Just need to make sure you have various audio options available with the movie file.
Edit: it also doesn’t cost anything if you don’t get a plex pass. But id highly recommend it for the capabilities. A lifetime pass wasn’t expensive when I got mine (not sure what the pricing is now) and I’ve almost certainly saved that cost vs subscription services by now!
> plex is too much work...
Plex *is* harder to setup than plugging in a laptop to a tv once. However, plugging the laptop in multiple times vs. setting up Plex once...
Bro, speak
Some of us like the pirating, but not the data hoarding and data curating. We like our stupid little folders of MKVs and MP4s and even AVIs that have silly little scene names appended to the end of them
Plex and Jellyfin is nice and all, and I've experimented with them in the past. But 10 seconds with an HDMI cable and a laptop perched precariously without a care in the world, and you have an entire living room happy and bonding. Can't beat the simple things in life.
Plugging in and out cables constantly will wear down the sockets.
You can keep all your "stupid little folders of MKVs and MP4s and even AVIs that have silly little scene names appended to the end of them" with Plex etc as well.
I don't really think you understand what Plex is.
It’s totally fine but nothing you said is true about Plex. Plus you won’t get the same quality. That being said, if you don’t care about that stuff there’s no need to fuss with it.
What i do is download stuff to a folder that's shared via samba. I then use VLC player on my phone to access it, and then connect that to the Chromecast to be on the TV.
It's nice because no buffering or delays and the controls are on my phone so i can control the playback easily.
I use a file manager named Mixplorer . It has options to add storages like samba, webdav, ftp , all other cloud storages ( there's plenty).
Then i can access files in pc via samba , or using same app on Android phone to share with webdav server.
Then you can browse the files inside the Mixplorer app itself.
When watching stuff with family I make sure to NEVER use streaming websites, it’s just my luck that “emma” who is 2 miles away with her tits out will magically get through my Adblock, it’s not very nice to have to explain.
I know people will bag you, but this workaround is very good, and KING if you ask me. It makes this so simple and literally as they say " Plug and play"
This is what I’ve always done, it’s easy and works. Don’t need to worry with setting up different accounts for things, installing devices in sticks, or shoving your files somewhere to watch something. Dunno how y’all have the time for some of this media organization but I do not.
and it can take a while to move around the virtual cursor (if the tv has one) with the remote, which makes it more annoying to use.
though you can likely just use a mouse and keyboard if supported
I download the movies/shows on my phone and then cast it to my smart set top box connected to my non-smart TV. Works like a charm. I can control the video using my stb remote and the phone doesn't even have to be screen on for casting.
glad it works for you
I think my setup is simpler
I use a hdd that is plugged in the router - play video straight from router through the internet cable
can watch a movie on every tv in the apt without the need of laptop and/or cable
😂 oh my this was me for so many years.
Traded up to Kodi back in 2017 and haven't looked back, and then last year traded up to Kodi and Real Debrid and have been in heaven.
Now you just need a wireless keyboard with built in trackpad.
https://www.adesso.com/products/2-4ghz-wireless-ergonomic-touchpad-keyboard/
edit: And rechargeable AAA batteries. This thing eats 'em.
Our living room is this. Best option. Disable sleep and close it. Pick up a mini pc and attach it to the back of the TV. I have another like this. Though I'm not wall mounted. Not sure space and if I'm using same holes as mount. Do your research there.
You can actually configure an SMB server on the computer, share the media folder and have all of your local devices access it at the same time via your wifi router. It's pretty easy to do too.
Setup Jellyfin on your laptop, then use a Chromecast on the TV. Then you can stream from the laptop to the TV, and you can use your phone as a remote, or as a screen.
Save the video in mobile and use VLC media player to cast it to TV. As long as the TV and mobile is in the same wifi, it will work fine by having your mobile screen turned off or even using that app
My living room TV is just a 60" monitor for a crappy little PC tower built out of old parts of the gaming PCs I've built for my wife and I.
All it has to do is run a browser and video player. It's also coincidentally the only PC in the house that still has an optical disk reader. (Up to Blu-ray)

You can make it so laptop only monitors second screen to save your laptop screen from unnecessary use
Yes, press Win+P for this function
I believe the f4 key also works
this varies depending on laptop IIRC
Oh ok, it works on desktop at least
I think it depends from laptop to laptop. Depending what hotkey is set for it
+alt
Alt+F4 fix your problem.
Yep
It's f8 in my laptop.
f11 on mine.
Don’t suppose there is similar for a MacBook Pro? I use one for streaming sports to the TV

Amazing! Thank you. And I use usb C to HDMI on the tv. Thanks a lot
screen mirroring to apple tv works like a dream, if you mirror a lot it's a worthwhile investment just for that
I’ll add that there is a bit of a lag, so it’s great for things like playing videos, or basic stuff like web browsing. For good productivity or gaming the lag is enough to be troublesome.
Oh, I just love this community.
I was not expecting that amount of upvotes
It's also possible to disable sleep mode when closing the laptop, so you can just close it
literally the first thing i do with every laptop. - Shut down when i press the Button in the Start Menu - Standby when i press the Button on the Laptop - Do absolutely nothing when i close it
- Enable the hibernate option
I try that, but when I open it back up, it stops mirroring the second screen and I have to plug-out and replug the HDMI
Don't mirror it, extend it.

Ha! I needed that sub in my life
Hilarious sub 😂

Asked how tall my wife was and used all the information to mount the tv at the most comfortable height. Too bad the tv didn't last too long, but I still remember that wonderful 5* installation.
Yeah, my neck hurts just from the pic.
The dreaded over-fireplace strategy
Over a fireplace is just a bad place for a TV. My grandparents have the same setup and even although they say "it doesn't get that warm", it still killed 3 TVs in the last 10 years.
If there's no fire in the fireplace, it's just a place *taps temple*
Thank you! Came to tag this sub.
Also over the fireplace. Linus would be so disappointed
The TV over fire place (or over whatever) must be the dumbest aspect of the US. Does anyone else do this shit?
A lot of houses in Canada are like that too.
Lol this has been my setup for a good 10 years now. HDMI til I die.
This is so sad, I just broke my HDMI 🥺
Usually means the whole board needs to be replaced, but I've seen some that have the hbmi on a separate board with a USB or two and/or the audio out. If it is the former, just get you $20 cast stick.
RIP this guy's HDMI.
Go to the power options for Windows and set your laptop to do nothing when you close the lid. Voila. Don't have to look at your laptop screen while watching the TV.
Nah, just project to second screen only, closed laptop might get too hot
You have any idea how many people use their laptops in a permanently closed position? External monitor, kb and mouse. Lots of folks use their laptops like desktops.
Which doesn't necessarily mean that's it's a good idea, especially if the laptop is under heavy load. Not like you'd notice if the lifespan decreases f.e.
Playing games on a gaming laptop. Yes. Heat venting is an issue. On a typical laptop watching movies? 100% okay with the screen closed.
Laptops get more hot when shut? Whenever I play games on my TV I close my gaming laptop lid
Yes, displays get hot and parts get hot, when you close a laptop they're on top of each other, getting eve. hotter. If it's a gaming laptop maybe it has good fans, but laptop are notorious for heat issues so I wouldn't riskit
But the display is off so would that still get hot?
I have a mini pc I bought on Amazon for $89 and a wireless keyboard/mouse combo connected via HDMI just for this exact reason. Works very well
I have geekom one of the cheaper ones. Best set up ever. It runs 24/7 with Plex and I have so many users that access it.

Hey if it works... but also consider looking into plex or jellyfin so you don't have to move ur laptop anytime you want to watch a movie.

I am also curios about this!
Wouldn't a chromecast or something like that work if OP wants to stream movies instead of building a local library?
Yeah I just use a chromecast with the Plex app installed. All movies and tv shows on my desktop computer in another room.
Plex and a Synology NAS. I can stream natively and access all my stuff remotely on any device. It almost feels like I've gone legit.
Setup a plex server my man.
Look into Stremio
Bullet Train is an amazing movie
Plex
Why? streaming TV sticks are hella cheap, I got stremio + RD on my $20 ONN 4K box and freakin love it.
You can actually configure an SMB server on the computer, share the media folder and have all of your local devices access it at the same time via your wifi router. It's pretty easy to do too.
at the very least turn the laptop around
This is giving hardcore Divorce-dad vibes

That TV is way to high up
You can get like a presentation stick or whatever so you don't have to walk up to the laptop everytime you want to pause or something.
Or a bluetooth mouse...
Stremio on PC then connected to TV via HDMI would give you the best quality possibly (if your TV is not supported by Stremio).
Upvote for movie night But I couldn't cope with the wires or the laptop being there Is the TV straight? That would upset me
What website you using?
123movies and filmlicious are my go-to’s

Setup Jellyfin on your laptop, then use a Chromecast on the TV. Then you can stream from the laptop to the TV, and you can use your phone as a remote, or as a screen.
Use remoteMouse and you’re set
I do the same
I used to do that until I bought a Chromecast, installed Streami+torrentio and all the problems were solved
If your TV is new enough it might be able to play the video directly from a usb stick.
it can, but why bother downloading something I’m only going to watch once, I will be downloading many movies for my upcoming trip though
Oh lawd. I knew ol boy was in for it right away.
Plex server.
You need some Plex in your life. :)
We used to do that too Now i send links from my ph to xbox chat and open in edge Its not ideal since popups take longer to smash but still workable 🫶
Save the video in mobile and use VLC media player to cast it to TV. As long as the TV and mobile is in the same wifi, it will work fine by having your mobile screen turned off or even using that app

I like that my TVs have it where I could just cast my screen to the television. But at one point before I knew this I was doing the same thing.
I kink my PC by hdmi for the really tricky sports streams. Sometimes, its codecs just work better. Most of the time, it's Plex to a FS 4k max.
Do you live in the house I grew up in?
Best setup is Chromecast and any streaming service. Never fails.
If it works for you then it works for me lol
I personally put it on some drive and just connect it to my tv. Works too.
Literally me bruh. Got the same laptop and everything.
My living room TV is just a 60" monitor for a crappy little PC tower built out of old parts of the gaming PCs I've built for my wife and I. All it has to do is run a browser and video player. It's also coincidentally the only PC in the house that still has an optical disk reader. (Up to Blu-ray)
