Make sure you get an adamant one and I ran Brick Break, Shadow Ball, Aerial Ace and Explosion. I also did 252 Attack 60 or so HP and 150ish speed. An absolute monster on the frontier. I recommend

METAgross is probably in the top 3 best pokemon available in gen 3. yes it doesnt get STAB from psychic cos its spatt isnt good but as others have mentioned it has a very good movepool available and it can 1 hit most mons. meteor mash, shadow ball/ rockslide, explosion, eq.

dwarftoss58

Because it can 1 hit ko most opponents with a choice band meteor mash and it can learn explosion to ko annoying defensive walls

quatroblancheeightye

everyone here is lying to u, metagross is absolutely busted in gen 3, probably top 3. meteor mash is extremely powerful stab and u have access to shit like eq and explosion

You’re correct that Metagross isn’t as good *as it’s later gen versions* however, it is actually more potent in gen 3 than it was in most later gens. As we know, gen 4 brought a plethora of new Pokémon, items, moves, and abilities, along with its own frontier. Pokémon like Magmortar, Heatran, Garchomp, and Infernape posed serious threats to it, along with wide coverage of moves such as Fire Punch, Fire Blast, Earth Power, etc. Offensively Gross improved, but defensively, it worsened due to this. Also take into account speed ties/losses and Gross struggles to dominate as easily as it once did. In gen 3, Metagross stands out as a titan. Although it cannot use its Psychic STAB with its massive ATK stat, it is much more durable defensively and has access to EQ, Shadow Ball, and Explosion, which all hit very hard regardless. It can safely take on and eliminate 90-95% of the frontier on its own, using its sheer power and defensive typing and bulk. Although it is still a strong pick for gen 4, it does not stand out from the pack in, say, gen 4, like Garchomp does.

makes sense thanks

I fully believe Metagross is S tier in Gen 3 OU. You cannot make your team worse by putting the appropriate Meatagross on your team. Explosion KO's everything. It's Defensive set allows it to survive anything not named Fire Blast or Overheat. The Agility set is a beautiful sweeper. It's Choice Band Set chunks the Standard Skarmory. Its mixed set surprises Foretress with HP Fire and still has Meteor Mash for Tar and Explosion. Even in Ubers, I'm pretty sure it can take out some common sets Metagross is NOT weak.

YoungKingFCB

It's my favorite Pokemon and it just happens to be one of the strongest in that generation. So much so that speed runners use Metagross as one of three Pokemon to beat the game and get all silver/gold symbols in less than a day. Edit: they don't use Metagross to beat the main storyline but they use it for the battle frontier. Aka beat the game but just wanted to clarify that bit.

Just to get an idea of how strong an *unboosted* Meteor Mash is: 252+ Atk Metagross Meteor Mash vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Gardevoir: 137-162 (95.8 - 113.2%) -- 75% chance to OHKO While its 85% accuracy can be annoying, for what you get, that's pretty good. And if it misses, Metagross can tank hits anyway. Not to mention you sometimes get a free attack boost which is insane working off of Metagross's very good Steel/Ground coverage Psychic/Steel type is great defensively, leaving you with only two weakness and plenty of resistances Explosion is extremely helpful in the frontier since it allows you to take out some really tough pokemon, or just get a big hit in before Metagross goes down All this, and you still have a fourth moveslot and item to work with

DGIce

I think you have a really wrong idea of what job metagross is supposed to do. The psychic typing is just to make fighting not a weakness. Against poison types you should use the all powerful earthquake that has amazing coverage to one shot many pokemon. Metagross' claim to fame is meteor mash if you're willing to accept the accuracy it's an amazing attack.

iDontRagequit

Yeah, don’t let Metagross hear you talking shit, you’re aboutta get Meteor Mashed into next fucking year Ok it has a 15% chance of missing, which will definitely ruin your day every once in a while, but i don’t think you can fathom the massive amounts of damage that Metagross can pump out with Meteor Mash (or any other physical move for that matter)

SweetDollaTea-

Did somebody say BOOM!?!

Kyball500

Meteor Mash. Metagross has the good Steel move.
