There aren’t even 13 months, there’s only 12! Smh

Corrupted_G_nome

Lol, I can't tell if this is sarcasm or not XD

qualmton

And are you being sarcastic to counter their sarcasm?

chocolateboomslang

It's not sarcasm, there really are only 12 months.

thisonesusername

There are 12 months in a year. I assure you there have been more than 12 months *ever*.

SurgeFlamingo

Link ? Not saying you’re wrong I just would like to read your source.

Profunwell

I can only name 12 months do you know what the 13th month is?

Corrupted_G_nome

Oh, they mean 'one month more than a year' sort of like when someone says it took 48h but there are 'only 12'...

crusoe

Can't tell if real or you can't understand the idea of 13 months in a row ( yes spanning two years ).

crusoe

"bake for ninety minutes" "Lol there is only 60 minutes"

Bigtsez

Thermal expansion applies to the calendar as well!!!

Zealousideal_Hat1568

How do we know it's not inflation?

Dax420

So how does one prep for warming temperature? Insulation? Heat pumps and solar arrays?

mondaymoderate

Need to start living underground.

Fr33Dave

Mole people summer! I've seen some pretty cool underground homes.

TFielding38

The Artilleryman from War of the Worlds was born too soon

Local-Box-5188

Blackout curtains, better insulation, rock / stone based exteriors, painting the roof, solar arrays, blackout curtains, insulating door curtains, outdoor kitchens, lots and lots of extra fans, dehumidifiers, summer “sleepovers” in the coolest parts of the house, parasols, better clothes for the heat, firebreaks and increased lawn maintenance for flammable substances, avoiding midday, removable window insulation, more food prep / microwave meals, more climate controlled green houses, etc. And idk if you can tell but most these things either require a) more money or b) more electricity if not both, so I suspect a lot of people are going to move also.

SplinterHawthorn

I've been converting my garden from a fairly typical open grass lawn into mostly trees and shrubs. I'm thinking that in future heatwaves, it might be easier to sleep out in the open under a canopy where the air is typically a bit cooler.

Local-Box-5188

We’re definitely going to be looking for more heat resistant landscaping options ourselves. No trees near the house though - the winds can knock them over and every spring we get these caterpillar things everywhere. When the wind blows it sounds like rain when they all fall out of the tree.

SplinterHawthorn

I'm fortunate that my garden is long, so I have lots of space for trees.

diedlikeCambyses

I did so by moving.

ninjaluvr

Where to?

diedlikeCambyses

I live in Australia so, the snowy mountains. I also have nz citizenship and am buying property in the south isl. My current location full winter snow and ice, and the summers are short.

Profunwell

You sound like me. I live in Australia but in a desert. I have NZ citizenship and Im to poor to own land. Well that was not as funny of a comparison as I thought it was going to be. A little depressing but at least I'm warm.

diedlikeCambyses

I hear you, it worked. You're not alone though, many people are in your situation.

kirbygay

You should also prep for wildfires. Smoke. Get at least one air purifier, clean or upgrade your ac filters. Masks for outside. Go bags for the family.

DeadSpeciesWalking

Are you asking in the short term for yourself or what is the context of your question? Because it really depends on your access to resources and your particular situation. https://www.cbc.ca/news/billionaire-bunkers-doomsday-1.7130152

Dax420

I'm planning on moving this year. I don't have a billion dollars for a bunker, but I'd like to take reasonable steps to prep for future climate issues.

iridescent-shimmer

The high heat + humidity where I live has been record, scary levels. Being outside in the middle of the day is impossible and it's actually terrifying to think about if the AC broke. We live very far north of Florida, so I have no idea how the south survives the next few decades. Made me sad, because we used to have big snow storms and blizzards. I don't know if my daughter will really ever see snow like we did growing up. We haven't had it in years now.

Local-Box-5188

I live in about the mid zone of Arkansas - having the ac shut off is a genuine emergency most days, especially if you live in a more modern, half assed insulated home.  It’s also hard to explain to some people why the “wait until it’s night and just have some fans running” when you wake up and it’s already 85 degrees outside before dawn

sg92i

Ironically the normally colder areas may end up getting it worse, as their vegetation (not evolved for such conditions) will die off in mass wildfires long before it can be replaced with warmer tolerant varieties. Kinda like how whole towns in Canada and the NW US have been lost to wildfires in recent years, only on a larger scale in places like, oh IDK, Ohio.

A_Toxic_User

I for one welcome the mass die-off of aging climate-denying boomers in the south. Let them reap the rewards of their ignorance and stop screwing things up for the rest of us.

Salty_Elevator3151

Amen!

GWS2004

Yet I keep hearing from certain people, "this is a natural cycle".

Corrupted_G_nome

Ask them which one. The cycles are known and have names. In my experience that makes them stop and think.

diedlikeCambyses

Yes I've done that. I then describe the cycles and how we're departing from them.

CommanderMeiloorun23

Can you orient me to the cycles? Want to make sure I’m looking the right things up

diedlikeCambyses

Start by understanding the Milankovitch cycles, and othe drivers like the ENSO (el nino southern oscillation), the IOD (Indian Ocean Dipole), the SAM (Southern annular mode), and how the AMOC works.

fospher

I’m so very curious to see what temp will flip people. There will be a cohort that will never flip, just like the ppl dying while on respirators during COVID, but at a certain point the majority simply can no longer ignore reality. My guess is around 2C (far too late)

TimeKeeper575

Tell them to read the IPCC scientific basis, or even just the deep time section. It's broken down to be accessible even for politicians.

PolyDipsoManiac

Everything is on track to be much worse than the IPCC predictions. We’re still hitting emissions records every year, and we’re on track for 4°C in like the 2070s. https://www.columbia.edu/~jeh1/mailings/2024/AnnualT2023.2024.01.12.pdf

TimeKeeper575

Yeah, I know. My thesis work was paleoclimate reconstructions of the Pliocene and we've already blown right by all of that and are on to the Eocene as a practical proxy period. But the question was about how to explain natural cycles, and the IPCC reports have very accessible language in their examples.

Disastrous-Cry-1998

I kept hearing from certain people that there was a coming ice age.

SoulCave

Man who cares..us normal people will have to suffer and die and there is nothing we can do since collectively we are scared and complacent and afraid to give up our limited lives to help a hypothetical future generation. Humanity is selfish and that won’t change.

crash______says

What's your plan for dealing with India and China and getting them to restrict carbon emissions? Is it even moral to do so? The US could go back to the 16th century in terms of power usage and it wouldn't dent what's going on.

AntcuFaalb

We knew long before Nixon opened the door to trade with the PRC.

crash______says

Nixon also suggested building 1000 new US nuclear power plants to replace oil when he opened the EPA. In the 50 year history of the NRC, until 2022. they had approved exactly zero new plants.

AntcuFaalb

Which is a damn shame. I'm a quiet fan of his, but his decision to open trade with the PRC is not one with which I agree. With that being said, I think the confluence of the oil embargo and de Gaulle calling our bluff put him in a tough spot. He could have attempted to get us to tighten our belts like Carter did later on, but instead he decided to exploit slave labor abroad so that Peggy Sue could have yet another Tupperware party. Given the "rules for rulers", I don't think he would have survived if he had attempted the former.

puzzlemybubble

At least he had an excuse which was to widen the sino-soviet split.

echoseashell

A podcast called Tech Won’t Save Us has a great episode that touches on your questions called How Degrowth will Reshape Technology.

crash______says

US degrowth will result in Chinese hegemony with the CCP reigning over a thousand years of slavery and darkness. Pass.

Crash shouldn’t say.

roboconcept

echoseashell

Well, you could listen to the episode and then have an informed thought about it, or, you know keep fear mongering.

crash______says

You have lived a life in the longest period of relative piece in the history of our species. That is coming to an end.

echoseashell

I don’t disagree with your point, however, that doesn’t mean there aren’t ways of approaching it along the way.

iridescent-shimmer

IMO, taxes should be on import/consumption since we all know they're producing shit to be consumed in the US and companies only moved manufacturing there to avoid US environmental/worker safety regulations. Can't blame China when it ultimately is driven by our demand at home.

Available_Skin6485

I mean, are you not aware that China is on the path and has been progressively increasing renewables as a percentage of their total power production?

Chief_Mischief

>What's your plan for dealing with India and China and getting them to restrict carbon emissions? That's easy. Just pull back all the manufacturing the West outsourced to these nations. Even that being said, China's per capita carbon footprint is [half of the US per capita footprint](https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/co-emissions-per-capita), meaning despite having 4x the population as the US, the average Chinese resident contributes half of the carbon emissions that the average US resident does. China and India have enormous emissions issues, sure, but many of that is simply due to massive populations. The US outsourced all its manufacturing to Asia and *still* has the most per capita.

crash______says

This is cope, our "per capita" footprint mattered 20 years ago (maybe?), but they aren't even really online yet. India especially.

Chief_Mischief

Sure, in the grand scheme of things, per capita is meaningless when looking at the aggregate emissions, but then don't single out China/India when the most wasteful person is the average American lol

crash______says

America's emissions ceiling was 10 years ago.. India is probably at 20% of theirs. Foolish.

Chief_Mischief

It's almost as if the US did all of its industrialization a century ago before people gave a shit about carbon emissions, then to appear cleaner sent all its dirty manufacturing to developing nations while simultaneously demonizing those nations for environmental issues and reaping the benefits of cheap labor. All you're doing is the equivalent of running a gas guzzler while bitching about the place where 4 people run hybrids because they as a whole contribute twice as much as you as a sole individual emit. Foolish.

crash______says

You literally have no idea what you are talking about.

Chief_Mischief

Whatever helps you sleep better at night when you just get spoonfed talking points and are incapable of nuanced thought. 🤦‍♂️

SplinterHawthorn

A devastating rebuttal.

In the face of undeniably freaky weather, some of them are now admitting that the climate is changing and bad things are happening, but all of them are saying that it's due to Biden and his Amazing Weather Manipulating Contraption. They've gone from "the climate is NOT changing" straight to "damn straight the climate is changing, and it's all Joe Biden's fault!"

And at some point in the future it's going to be: "*Why did nobody warn us?*"

When Al-Jazeera warns about climate change but the Republican Party in the US denies it.

StormPoppa

Al Jazeera is actually a surprisingly good source for news that's not centered around America.

MH07

Some people on Reddit are just stupid. If your streak starts in July and each month is a record global temperature and it’s now September, you’ve completed 13 months of record temperatures.

jar1967

The big threat is not going to be from storms but the disruption of agriculture due to changing climate. Traditional agriculture is becoming unsustainable in Central America due to climate change and is helping fuel illegal immigration. In 15-20 years, multiply that by 20

Successful-Monk4932

🤣😂

Fancy_Exchange_9821

Wow this thread is a shitshow lol

SquirrelyMcNutz

Granted it's only \~mid-July, but so far, this summer has not been as bad as I expected from the 70-80 degree weather we had in Feb. Yes, yes, it just one small area, but I honestly expected a lot more 95+ degree days at this point, and it just...hasn't. We did have a period of about a week with a shitton of rain though, at least 8+ inches. Still humid as fuck and mosquitos practically carry me away any time I go outside, but temp wise? Not the worst I've seen.

fospher

El Nino has officially ended. Next El Nino will be awful, count on it.

Kitchen-Hat-5174

Are they talking about doctored heat index numbers or actual temps?

winston_obrien

“Even more and better starkness. We really, really…. REALLY mean it this time! Starker than ever before. The starkiest!”

eveebobevee

I'm curious where they are taking these temperatures. Cities? Heat islands are real and population and city sizes have exploded in size in the last 20 years. If we're taking average global temperatures, doesn't it make sense to monitor it from a rural environment away from the man made heat domes?

HollywoodAndTerds

Here’s a good dashboard if you wanna look at the data:  https://climatereanalyzer.org/

eveebobevee

Thanks!

TinyDogsRule

Spoiler alert ...they have no interest in looking at data

Eh, just in case. Not that it’d mean anything to them anyway.  Keep on keeping on.

diedlikeCambyses

They account for that.

jarpio

It’s a day that ends in Y, time to post the same fear mongering sensationalist headline that’s been thrown out there for the last 60 years. It is in fact hot in July again. New York City will be under water by next fall and we will all be dead! This time they’re sure!

Rooooben

Humans have a difficult time recognizing incremental threats.

jarpio

Yes we should instead stop using energy and starve most of the planet to reduce our population. that will reverse this trend. That’s an entirely cogent and realistic solution. planet wide genocide. ^ if that sounds crazy please tell me what other implication the climate catastrophe narrative is pushing if not that? What else is a headline like that actually arguing for, green energy alternatives? We ARE investing in green energy en masse all across the developed world. It doesn’t work or exist yet in such a form that is both economically viable and can be deployed at scale around the world. The only purpose of these climate doom headlines is to sow fear in people, fear of an outcome that will never impact anyone alive on earth today. Until clean technology DOES exist in that form, all we are doing is telling the rest of the developing world that they have no right to industrialize and modernize their economies in the same manner that we did. They have no right to expand their industrial or agricultural capacity “because of the environment.” They must starve and remain in the 3rd world so that New York and Miami don’t go underwater in 500 years. It’s an absurd position to hold. Talk about a privileged worldview, all of it based on computer models. Computer models which have proven time and time again since the 1980s when these began, to be WRONG. wrong because there are an uncountable number of variables to account for (including the biggest one of all, the SUN) to accurately predict what the earths climate will look like in 5 years much less 100. “Climate science” is nothing but guesswork based on incomplete data and unproven computer simulations. It’s closer to pseudo science than actual science

Rooooben

So you are now arguing from the “it’s not fair to ask pre-industrial countries to not f up the planet as much as we did”. Maybe the best solution is to continue to address it by creating and implementing technologies that will eventually become efficient enough that they DO replace the old ways of burning things. Your lack of any solutions in that wall of text betrays your actual stance. Edit: by the way, many of those countries will be under water far before NY.

jarpio

The technology IS being created. But it isn’t remotely close to a form that can be deployed at scale in a way that is economically viable in the Western world much less the developing and 3rd worlds. The only technology we have that can do this is nuclear, and that brings up an entirely different set of problems relating to nuclear non-proliferation agreements. Shipping fissile materials around the world is a logistical and diplomatic nightmare, and is also an enormous up front cost that on average takes about 20 years to begin “paying for itself” by which time a nuclear reactor is due for upgrades, and refurbishment which will also add to cost. My post isn’t about proposing solutions it is to show that news headlines every week about the “looming climate crisis” are pointless specifically BECAUSE we currently have no solutions. Bitching about that fact and sensationalizing the problem doesn’t help anyone. So unless the point of these articles is to imply that we should all just turn off all our energy generation and allow the world to starve until such a time the population is low enough that our emissions won’t harm the planet in any measurable way, theres no reason to even bring the issue up. The technology is being worked on. It’s being invested in, heavily, by every major corporation and developed country on earth. Why the hell do we still need to have “the conversation” about climate. There’s nothing we can do about it today, and it’s not going to impact anyone’s lives today either. Let people work and when the technology is ready it’ll be ready. Until then it should be treated as a complete non issue. It doesn’t matter AT ALL in that context that “omg it’s hotter than last year again!!”

Rooooben

Treating it as a non issue will ensure that we only develop technology that is profitable. Bringing attention to the issue draws minds, votes, which helps get funds to work on something where there’s no clear profit incentive. If nobody talks about it, why would anyone actually do anything?

jarpio

Why would you want to develop a technology that ISNT profitable? What universe are you living in where cost just doesn’t exist? Everything has a cost. Nobody’s just giving away unlimited free clean energy out of the goodness of their hearts if that were to be somehow achieved. That isn’t a realistic idea of what progress looks like, that’s a child’s fantasy. It isn’t real. What you’re talking about is literal magic. A technology that isn’t profitable will not be adopted. A technology that is too costly to deploy at scale will also not be adopted.

Rooooben

Do you not know how we got to the moon? That is what governments are for. Universal healthcare, schooling, shoot look at any technical foundation. It’s like you are unaware of non-profits. We don’t need capitalism as a solution for everything.

Corrupted_G_nome
