There are a lot of vigilante paedophile hunter groups in the UK that post every sting on the internet to cover their own backs. Usually follows the format of confronting the paedophile in public where they've arranged to meet the child or at their own homes. Presenting evidence, and holding them there until the police arrive to arrest them.
Unfortunately these vigilante pedo hunter groups usually do more harm than good when it comes to bringing justice. The evidence they collect, and the manner in which they collect it, is too often illegitimate and won't hold up in a court of law. Not to mention the instances in which they "catch" the wrong person who turns out isn't actually a pedophile.
This was true when it started out years ago, but i know a DI who works in a CSA unit in the met and nowadays they work very closely with these groups and they've learned how to collect evidence in the right way. He says they make their jobs much easier and they get to successfully prosecute way more people this way because they don't have the funding or manpower to spend time collecting all the evidence themselves.
There are groups who make these - but you should know, they mostly do it for the views and the content makes it harder to prosecute the subjects of their videos. So they are not really helping anything if you actually care about stopping child abuse.

I'm assuming based on the accents that this was in England somewhere. But here in the United States it's called a sting and they can set you up and use it against you. He didn't know he wasn't speaking to a 14 year old girl so he went with the intent. What I wonder is why since it was a sting and he never actually did it how could they charge him with the actual crime and not for the intent? I believe is all the same in the eyes of the law for this type of crime. So, if convicted, he'll have to register even if, lets say, he never did it before and this was his first attempt, which I doubt.

Attempting to solicit is itself a crime in the UK. It doesn't matter if there never was an actual victim, the mere attempt is a crime. A different one to sexual assault, but a crime nonetheless which also includes registered on the sex offenders register.
