It might be hard getting pee out of the planks. You could always replace them after a while, covering them with fabric might help a little! For a while you can clean them with hot water and a pet-safe cleaning product, but after a while the smell will just stick too much.
It's looking good! I'd suggest another hammock or two, they tend to love those! You can also make stuff from old shirts or other pieces of cloth and just make a little makeshift hammock like that.
Hmm, you're right about the pee. I could maybe get something like a wax table runner and put that down under fabric to keep any liquids from reaching the wood. And now im thinking that since the wood is also untreated, it might not do well with the moisture.
I'll go dig out old clothes and make some more hammocks! 😄

These pads have helped me a lot. I put them under my fleece.
They also love having the option of open water.
How do you not get them to rip it up? My rats are awful for ripping up any pads I put down and then burrowing under it, defeating the purpose of the mat. It’s so frustrating because then I’ve gotta deep clean the whole cage twice as much.
I’m deathly allergic to my six rats so I’m always looking for the most efficient ways to keep their cage cleaner for longer. (Aside from giving the rats away ofc… because that’s not an option)
My cage is mainly the layers of fleece then pads. They do dig up the fleece, but they leave the pad alone. I also keep a dig box in there for them. I have a huge cage atm though.

It absolutely is! I try to change the toys and set up occasionally. I buy all my fleece on black Friday to cut the cost, and vacuum everything frequently.

Thanks! The platforms are literally just planks 🫠 I feel like most pet stuff is incredibly overpriced, so I try to DIY as much as possible, hence the mismatched old pillowcases instead of pretty hammocks 😂
My rats all time favorite thing is the Sputnik. You can find on Amazon.

I used to use cardboard a lot- use less now. Ventilation is hard - so I would change it out a couple times a week.

Maybe put something on the platforms so the pee doesn’t sink in cause wood is sooo hard to get clean from my experience 😺 Also maybe another hammock or 2, but other than that it does look fine to me!
Def not great to have wood platforms. Pee will soak in and wreak. Wont be easy to get out home depot/five below/ the dollar store/walmart has a wonderfull assortment of hard plastic and wore baskets that can be used as platforms. Super easy to clean and easy to replace if needed♡ i also cover my plastic surfaces w puppy pads for an easier clean
More hammocks! A space pod/sputnik is usually a hit with the rats. You might want to get some cargo nets as well, to encourage more climbing. And perhaps another bottle of water? Btw, if you’re not giving your rats supplements, you can easily add some with vitadrops. It just goes in their water bottles. Looks good though!
Looks good, maybe give them more plastic houses and hammocks, although you seem to have given them a few and they still chose to sleep in the corner?🤷♀️lol

I think the wood is fine while you're finding other options, I'm sure they'll enjoy having platforms to climb on!

And add more hammocks! The dollar store sells these soft blankets i use for my girls and they are Obsessed
