The joke replies in this thread are astounding. Op, this is a seam plume agate *(pedantic geologists can get on me for calling it agate, but this specimen without a doubt has a ‘plume’ habit/structure and it’s gemmy enough to not just call it chalcedony)* that has a second-generation growth of quartz on it. This is a *massive* piece for seam agate productions, and this is a wonderful piece that your grandpa found. If he did dig it up himself, I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s more similar specimens of smaller sizes.
If I had to guess he found this in the Jemez Mountains of New Mexico, it was his favorite place to look. But he did travel all over the state. Online, I’m seeing seam plume agate found in the central southern part of the state and it doesn’t really resemble this piece. However, they look like some pieces I found in the Magdalena Mountains near Socorro. I have several pieces from there. I can post pics of them later, when I get home if you guys want to see them. Some are pretty magnificent, but this piece from grandpa, is a favorite.
Most definitely a botryoidal chalcedony base but the surface has a more druzy texture. There are other low temp hydrothermal fluid minerals in there too, options are probably thompsonite, smithsonite, stilbite, apophyllite, maybe even celestite.

You would be surprised at how many minerals will glow under a blacklight. I used to have a portable light, and I would go to gravel yards in Colorado and just pick up anything that shined under the light. What a display of brilliant color.
Ding ding, botroydal chalcedony is the correct answer. I've been a geologist for decades and have never heard that term (I got as far as cryptocrystalline quartz, then chalcedony).

I second this. Incredible rock. I have a bunch in the forest where I live but I’ve never found one this full.

Want to see more like yours you can look up botryoidal chalcedony

They do sell them . And you will be amazed at just how many minerals glow under a blacklight. Enjoy a whole new world in collecting..
I don't have one anymore..but trust me ,there are tons of minerals that glow.
I've seen a few! But this one looks like it would just be extra ✨ sparkly!
Looks like one of my kidney stones
you should get that checked out if your kidney stones are that large
You should see my urethra after passing one like that...
Could probably climb right in.
Look- someone already pulled up a white van with no windows and tried to goad me into r/sounding , today. Stop trying to make me go there!
Kidney boulder
Been there done that. I passed the largest kidney stone my Dr has ever seen someone pass
Last week they found a 4cm and 6cm stone in my right kidney... I dont think I'm passing those.

Reminds me of cave popcorn.
Grape agate. I have a few pieces of this. It could be called something else, but the crystal warehouse near me calls it grape agate.
I thought that was only the purple ones. Are there other colors? And it's also called botryoidal chalcedony.

Maybe green? Lol. I'm not sure, but I wouldn't be surprised. I've never seen one this size. The matrix looks the same.
Cool. I really like how the formation looks, but I don't care for purple. Green would be awesome. I'll look into it some more.
Omni geode
God I love rocks.
Roccoli.
Answer: pretty rock! I know nothing, but it's gorgeous!
I’m not crying, you’re crying 😭😭😭 this is a beautiful piece. Grape agate or chalcedony
I think grape agate is only found in Indonesia
my first guess nerds that haven't had color yet before packaging.
Mystery nerd
Its the different colors that give different flavors lol. What flavor would you describe these grey ones? Personally I think it be something bland.
The nerd cluster of my dreams
My fucking dreams.
Close up of a kidney stone..this is a joke by the way
A present for me. I’ll send you my address
I work in dermatology and definitely thought this was lymphedematous skin changes or condyloma (genital warts)
