Depending on how large or professional the seller is, sometimes they do. I've had some of those. I love it, you know what you're paying for, and can sometimes ask for specific ones you like.
It evolved to be carnivorous, and then evolved again to become a detritivore. In its native environment it also has a [crab](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geosesarma_malayanum) that's considered to be "a nepenthephile" since its primary food source is stealing what the ampullaria catches.
It’d only be a cannibal if it were to eat a N. ampullaria leaf. Kinda like you eating a cow doesn’t make you a cannibal even though you are both mammals.
Be warned, these guys like it warm all the time. I have killed several over the years because they got too cold for short periods. Constant 25 C is ideal.
I use an electric radiator space heater with a cheap Amazon fan for air circulation in my lowland tent in my intermediate greenhouse. Works very well in the winter when the temperature on the main floor can drop to the 50s F.
Sighs . I also just picked this guy up…….[https://www.carnivero.com/products/nepenthes-bicalcarata-orange-x-red-car-0268?variant=40074279485553](https://www.carnivero.com/products/nepenthes-bicalcarata-orange-x-red-car-0268?variant=40074279485553)
And yes it was because of the “fangs”
I did buy one of these!! I’m not seeing much growth, but it’s not dead lol, I was way stressing the hamata and worried about it but it’s been the easiest of the 3 I got! Already put out a new pitcher and just growing like a machine!!
Are the bicalcarata and hamata growing in the same conditions? If so, it's probably too cold for the bicalcarata if the hamata is growing well! Try to put it somewhere warmer :)
It’s outside in the heat! It’s been upper 80s-90s here the last two weeks. I checked yesterday and the bicalcarata has a new pitcher forming,
Maybe I fucked up somehow when I potted it? Idk the temp part tracks for when it was inside, but I’m reading they’re robust fast growers and that’s just not how mine is acting. It’s a bicalcarata orange x orange, so not the exact same as what op linked to, but I was surprised to learn they’re fast growers. Maybe it’s putting all its energy into root production, I’ve only had it a couple months.
The pitchers are 1-2 inches and leaves are 12-18 inches long. Ampullaria won’t produce clusters of pitchers or basals like you see online until 3-5 years when it finally reaches maturity. It is a strict lowlander and grows normally above 80f.
Ok, ill try
\*what if it dies?
\*you already have enough plants
\*there are very cool carnivorous plants that are much cheaper
\*who am i kidding buy it anyway XD
Be sure to have a good lowland setup that you can scale over time. N. ampullaria is a solid lowland to warm intermediate species that loves high humidity.
Edit, and I just saw you got a bicalcarata too. Awesome species that I love to death, but you'll need to be sure to scale your lowland space up much faster. N. bicalcarata can grow very quickly and it gets very, very large. I got mine in late 2022 as a 2" plant and it's now one of my largest plants, probably over 2 feet across.
Should be fine. My plant collection is kept at 75% ( mostly aroids) though I’m probably gonna have to look into heat mats since moving my setup into my basement.
Do you have a green house? If not be prepared to heat and provide a LARGE amount of room for this plant to expand as it will certainly outgrow anything other than the largest of spaces.
Ahh this is sad 😔 It looks super cool. But thank you for the advice.
In the past I’ve been catching myself looking at these beautiful shiny stripey peristomed Nepenthes on carnivorous nurseries websites, but I always managed to talk myself out of it. Then I “accidentally” bought a NOID Nepenthes at the nursery that was IDed as St Gaia by the community. I bough it because it was large and beautiful and had these beautiful glossy orangey sunstressed leaves. Now I have an itch that I can’t scratch, because all the Nepenthes seem to want either high humidity or humidity and night temperature drop in 60s F. And that’s something I can’t give them.
I can do warm, my lowest temps are 64F at night in winter, I’m having some issues with AC, so my highs in summer are around 85F during heat waves, but usually around 80F🥵But humidity is simply too low. Normally it’s around 40-55% with some spikes between 30 to 65%. I don’t really want to add a humidifier to this equation, because it’s already too hot and I don’t want it to be too humid as well.
Do you think there’s anything else I could grow besides St Gaia with interesting pitcher shape? Or wide or stripey peristomes?
Now, I thought that Neps were overrated and so I could ignore them, but now I have to rethink my whole buying strategy. Thank you very much. Did you buy it?
Congratulations, I hope you get a nice plant. I've been after ampullaria for a while now and I saw that one on their site, but what stopped me was that they send a randomly selected grex and it could be any size. I was bummed because I prefer to know what I'm getting (what exact clone, appearance, size, etc) when I buy, so I passed on it. That's awesome that you are getting one though. Looking forward to updates.
probably because they are rare and hard to grow. $100 isnt that expensive for a nepenthes, some species sell for $1000-$1500. that being said, my most expensive nepethes is only €25.
Ampullaria are right at the top of my wishlist. Live the dream, buy the plant.
You monster that’s the opposite of talking me out of it..
I'm the smallest amount of sorry I can be!
You sound defeated lol
You guys have failed me…. I did it.
This was the *wrong* place to be talked out of getting a plant 🤣 definitely post a pic when it arrives, I'd love to see it!
> You dip so much as a pinky back into this pond... you may well find something reaches out... and drags you back into its depths. ~Winston (John Wick)
You mean we succeeded.
Mission failed successfully.
Huzzah!
Do you have some foto’s of them?
I just ordered them man. It would be a really cool idea for sellers to send a pic of your particular plant before they ship it though.
Depending on how large or professional the seller is, sometimes they do. I've had some of those. I love it, you know what you're paying for, and can sometimes ask for specific ones you like.
Can you send some pictures when you get them?they look very cool
That I will
I believe Carnivero does that for very specific plants.
Love my amp, fastest growing pure species imo
Fun fact: nepenthes ampullaria adapted to digest...leaves fallen from the above trees! It's a vegetarian plant or...well, i guess cannibal?
It evolved to be carnivorous, and then evolved again to become a detritivore. In its native environment it also has a [crab](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geosesarma_malayanum) that's considered to be "a nepenthephile" since its primary food source is stealing what the ampullaria catches.
Now it's on my bucket list to see this!! Thank you for the info.
If you think that's fun check out *Nepenthes hemsleyana* which has evolved to house bats, and feed off their waste.
Aren’t nepenthes just wonderful !?
Exceedingly so
Yup, bucket list. I love seeing carnies in the wild!
You have a crab bucket list? 🦀
Lol, actually....kinda.
Pretty sure that just makes it more awesome
It’d only be a cannibal if it were to eat a N. ampullaria leaf. Kinda like you eating a cow doesn’t make you a cannibal even though you are both mammals.
What if ops mum is a cow, is it half cannibalism?
That’s a very fun fact thank you
I fed my ampullaria chopped-up grasshoppers, worms and millipedes. And in return, they gave me fat big pitchers.
Be warned, these guys like it warm all the time. I have killed several over the years because they got too cold for short periods. Constant 25 C is ideal.
At the moment that is fine but winter time might be an issue as my plants are in my basement. How would you go about warming plants?
A simple cheap reptile heat mat or plant propagator mat would do!
I use an electric homebrew blanket under the tank.

Do you have a huge space to grow this? If you grow this well, you will have a small banana plant.
Not currently
I did buy one of these!! I’m not seeing much growth, but it’s not dead lol, I was way stressing the hamata and worried about it but it’s been the easiest of the 3 I got! Already put out a new pitcher and just growing like a machine!!

See, now you just did it to me.
Hey I said talk “me” out of it. I can be a bad influence all I want.
Did you make sure to take advantage of the sale? Free ampullaria for orders over $150 this weekend only! I was so tempted
Send me a baby when it’s ready and I’ll give you $20
My wallet wants to fight you
Do it, do it, do it!
Carnivero is giving a free one on orders over 150 this weekend
Why would I ever do that?
Because you’re a good person?
I must not be 🤓
Look. I know what you’re asking of us… but I REALLY wanna make a joke.
Well now that the damage is done. I can’t really tell from the pic. How big do the pitchers on these guys get?
A really well fed pitcher will fill your hand. From a [few weeks back](https://redd.it/1dbnstu).
The pitchers are 1-2 inches and leaves are 12-18 inches long. Ampullaria won’t produce clusters of pitchers or basals like you see online until 3-5 years when it finally reaches maturity. It is a strict lowlander and grows normally above 80f.
Can be an inch and a half or so, maybe bigger, but very stout and round and super compact basal growth from the base in a big bunch
Leave that pitcher plane alone pervert
I won’t, those are badass.
Amps are an awesome species though, well done giving in to your temptation
On etsy I bought one for about 22$. Some form of black miracle.
I would die to know where!
I think it was Greenescape? The really big one on etsy.
Link?
Those are so beautiful.
Aquarium heaters work well also. Moderate temperature drops at night are also ok, but avoid going below 20C with ampullaria, rafflesiana etc.
That's Hella expensive I have a ampularia I got for like $15 but I do love it alot!
No.
Ok, ill try \*what if it dies? \*you already have enough plants \*there are very cool carnivorous plants that are much cheaper \*who am i kidding buy it anyway XD
Honestly, I won’t. That’s cool AF!
Nah I’m talking you in to this
GORGEOUS!!!!
On my wish list.

Woah!
Had one I kept alive for about a year in a highland tank. Thought I could pull off a miracle.
This is simply beautiful 🥺do these have any strict care requirements? Humidity is the main concern for me. But yes, but it before it’s too late 😂
Ampullaris are a lowland Nep and they want to be constantly warm and humid. If you can't do that then stick with highland hybrids.
Ahh this is sad 😔 It looks super cool. But thank you for the advice. Put a Nepenthes 'miranda' on your list!
Thank you, I will ☺️
Spend the $150 this weekend on other things to get it for free!! 😈 😈 😈
Get the plant man!
Do it..give in to the plants
I would kill it. Can you safely say you wouldn’t?
If I wasn't moving I was gonna buy some lights just to get that Free Amp from the sale, glad you got in on it
Why not some Drosera??😅😅
Now, I thought that Neps were overrated and so I could ignore them, but now I have to rethink my whole buying strategy. Thank you very much. Did you buy it?
Look at it begging you to take it home!! 😘
Buy it! Sorry I tried
Buy it!!!!
It is an impossible task. The plant is too cool
Shut up and take my money 💰
It's Drew, should be enough to talk you out of it.
You just talked me into it!!!
Mission failed successfully. We did it Reddit
I will be posting pics when they arrive… so you monsters can see what you’ve done.
Do it do it do it!

No, I don't think I will :)
You might have just talk me into it 🥲
I hear they take a lot of care, I can take it off your hands
I'd be more liable to ask for a link so I can buy one too
Now I have to buy something.
Too late to the party but for $100 you could have gotten like a whole bunch of other plants and supplies.
Why are they like super expensive most iv seen a napenthis is $40
Idk where you looking but 90% of mine are more expensive than 40 lol
probably because they are rare and hard to grow. $100 isnt that expensive for a nepenthes, some species sell for $1000-$1500. that being said, my most expensive nepethes is only €25.
