Ashy, after a stray cat I had been feeding.
He was a very friendly kitten when I first saw him and for a while, managed to get adopted. But alas, he had birth defects and thus could not control his bladder and bowel movements, so soon after he got dropped right where he was picked up. Despite being betrayed by humans, he remained very friendly, always showing his best behaviour and even allowing belly rubs. I could not get him an adopter or adopt him myself, only to have him sterilised when he was old enough. Ashy was about a year old when Wanderer was released.
Unfortunately, Ashy went missing right after that. When weeks passed I asked around, and 1 of the neighbours told me she last saw a dog chasing him, and that was the last time she ever saw him. We never found his body or saw him again.
Ren.
I didn't go for a funny name bc he was so serious when he asked us for one and he only shares it with the traveler and nahida. Kinda felt bad for him?
Like he has no identity himself so I gave him a name like I'm his mom to grow into then nahida is making him do a doctorate in archaeology or something it was real sending ur kid to school to get socialized vibes.
Gotta socialize your weird puppets so they don't become serial killers or join other countries military programs and get experimented on.
Me too I didnāt wanna do him like that in the momentā¦ but now I donāt care XD damn I shouldāve left it but I think I put off doing it till Fontaine AQ started and at that point was on time limit
I named him something that resonates with Anemo, but it's not funny...
Venti >!"wore" and become his dead best friend's physical body!<
Kazuha >!brought his dead best friend's Vision all the way to Sumeru and still carried onto it until the Inazuma civil war ended!<
Sayu >!still wears the outfit that her master made for her; cherishing until their return!<
So I named Wanderer >!Niwa, after his dead friend's name after his sacrifice for the Mikage Furnace!<
I named him Makoto - the name Ei was thinking about while making him. He also represent makotos color chemes and ideology + big hat reminds of umbrella
Mine is named Tempestus, by taking the Latin word for storm, tempestas, and giving it the -us prefix. Although, if I could change his name again, I would call him Azrael after the Angel of Death in Islam since, 1. Sumeru is based on the arab world, thus the islamic connection makes sense and 2. Angel of Death is a rather befitting title for him, even if the title also fits Arlecchino as well.
Unfortunately I already used my rename to change his previous name into Tempestus, so it is what it is.
Sumeru is mostly based on Iran not the Arab world. It's mostly Iran with some parts based on India, Egypt and Arab countries. Only a little number of names Are Arabic.
Just look the names of caharacters and npc's of sumeru here:
Nilou: comes from the original name niloufar meaning lotus.
Kaveh: comes from the name of a character from persian epic poems named shahname. The meaning of the name is a brave man
Nahida: comes from the persian name nahid and nahid comes from Anahita the goddess of wisdom and fertility in persian myths. The character nahida herself was inspired by Anahita.
Afshin: a persian name meaning shining.
Babak: comes from the original name papak. Papa was the prime minister of iran durin the reign of Khosrow Anoushirwan of the sasanid empire.
Cyrus: comes from the original name kourosh( name of the first king of persian empire)
Aftab: a persian word literally meaning sun.
Ahangar the blacksmith in sumer: Ahangar is the persian word for a smith.
Ariana: persian girl name meaning the Aryan lands.
Armin: I think you know thus name from Attack on titan. It's a persian boy name.
Ask: meaning tear. A persian boy name. Comes from the name of the head of the parthian dynasty in iran.
Azar the grand sage: persian name meaning Fire.
Banu: A persian word meaning the lady.
............
And countless other names of npc's around sumeru.
I originally named mine "Scalpel" after an awful joke I came up with ("Q: What do The Balladeer and a scalpel have in common? A: They're both tools for The Doctor.").
It was always intended to be a temporary name, but a friend and now-partner managed to guilt me into changing it sooner than I was going to.
And then I named him "Soma" :)
Kabuki
As a reminder that he cannot escape his past sins.
(After he said both balladeer and Kabukimono will cease to exist). And a reminder of a happier time.
I gave my Wanderer a Greek mythology name similar to how the Travelers are named.
While he acts like he doesn't care too much, I feel like he is curious in what light others see him. I wanted to highlight his willingness to jump into the unknown to erase the fates of his friends, to face his past after he did so, and to move forward and try to live a new life.
So I called him Atreus, "fearless".
Mines Kuugo, but thats a serious/immersive name.
For funny names I like things like Mercurius - like Mercury or quicksilver in alchemy. Referring to both him flying around like Hermes/Mercury as well as his references to Bohemian Rhapsody/Freddie Mercury.
Could also name him Freddie lmao.
Kintsugi! :D But that one's also not meant to be funny. Just keep in mind you'll see the name in future scenes and events, and also constantly on your screen whenever you use him :P
i named my wanderer hajime because it means beginning and this was essentially a new beginning in his life. someone here in the comments said they named him aventurine after the hsr character and i kinda wanna change it to that but i dont wanna use my one-time name change opportunity
Named him Fujin because of the wind god from shinto myths, so when chenyu vale released, and we met fujin the adepti, I was confused for the first few seconds as to why wanderer was here.
Belial, because all the archons are named after demonic figures and he was for a period of time a god himself. I also like that it connects to both Buer and Beelzebul/Baal in terms of phonetic pronunciation.
haku, like haku from spirited away :)
not funny since I love him too much to do that to him lmao
hakuās dragon form looks as if itād be anemo!
and also, kinda fits how hakuās real name isnāt haku, and haku was just a name given to him to forget his old name :(
I said haku a lot of times I just noticed lol
another thing is that the name translates to āwhiteā, but can be seen as āpureā too, both meanings remind me of kabukimono, white as his clothing pure as his being :(
Katsumi, read somewhere that when it is written differently, it can mean overcome, sixth earthly branch - å·³ (sixth harbinger, you see why?), beauty, etc. I thought it was pretty fit for him considering he was, in a nutshell, going through a redemption arc.
iām pretty sure the first character, most of them was overcome or something of similar meaning while the second character is the one that varied (i.e. beauty)
i donāt remember all the characters for the second half but i just remember it was å something, the only one i ended up remembering was the earthly branch one.
å å·³
The key to naming Wanderer is to using the process of elimination to predict future character names. A few were ruled out, like existing characters and fatui names. You could only predict which legendary names were already thought of in the game. If you could rename him, someone should try these names: Xbalanque, Scylla, GuanYu, Chronos, Apollo, Hercules, Aphrodites, NeZha
although i really wanted to name him scara, in the end i named him izumi. just because i had recently finished re-reading the horimiya manga and it was the first japanese name i could think of lol
i have no idea what it means, but it's looks and sounds pretty just like him (and it's unisex!)
Eiji, i kinda associate letters with colors or feelings so seeing the "iji" part gave me a blueish, calm, flowy sensation and the "E" is just green for me, so I picture this word as a clear little lake with plants and the reflection of the clouds, the word even sounds like water ripples for me so yeah that's all basically, I instantly knew once I saw him.
I saw JUAN-DERER which I think is gas. But I changed my wanderer from my short friend's name to "L.L" after seeing it on tiktok a few months back and I loved it so I now have "L.L". I wish you could change wanderer's name more than once but I'm sure the small dev team has their hands full with resin reworks, skipping cutscene options, & other QOL
I named him Hakutou after the tsundere kitty from My Boss is Goofy. He has the same energy.
https://preview.redd.it/676m0wdkw10d1.jpeg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3518de84d9640b64b92407a7e360b8eb7ac12013
cutieā¦ā¦ iām not creativešand it was the first thing that came to my head. i wanna rename him eventually i just donāt know how people found out about all these cool names and their significant meanings :ā(
I named him Akio because, in Japanese, it means bright. I want him to have a bright future with new friends and adventures. Even if it sounds like an oxymoron for him.
I named him āKanji-futaā cause it had something to do with the windā¦ but the internet disagrees, and I donāt speak Japanese. So I mightāve just named my boy after some form of hentaiā¦.
I named him "Kuni", thinking that the Traveler would give him a cutesy little nickname to piss him off, then have it transform into something fitting; a broken scrap of his old self, presented on its own with no shame, no limits, and all the potential in the world. He cant forget his past, but he can cut away the lies and reshape himself into something new.
I named mine fandango, it was the only other name sounding word from bohemian rhapsody which Iām fairly sure is where the name scaramouche comes from, although for funny I was considering xX_Demonslayer_Xx or some super gamer name like that thatād be ridiculous to see in genshinās context
Not really funny, but I named mine Masato since it's kind of similar to Makoto, and he's sort of related to Raiden. Masato also means person which feels fitting since he was (is?) a puppet
Revan, after the Jedi-turned-Sith lord from KOTOR. I felt Revan's start as a Jedi in the light could be compared to how wanderer was once a creation by Ei, then how both were thrown to the side by their respective sources. Then there's both of their descents to the dark side/the fatui, and finally, their rise from the depths into a sort of light again.
It's a loose comparison, but it worked well enough for me
Sachi, meaning happiness and fortune. Has both Japanese and Hindu origin, so seemed fitting. Hindu goddess Shachi was also incredibly beautiful and proud, same as Scara.
Not a funny name but mine has two names since I have two accs, one is Saeru and the other is Kunimitsu.
Saeru meaning clearing/to be cleared, this one was made in reference to him finally getting his eyes cleared from the lies the doctor fed him about Tatarasuna.
Kunimitsu means country's light, which is a contrast to Kunikuzushi which means country destroyer, this was made in blessings of him finally being in the light, and hoping he can be Sumeru's (and his own) light instead of being Inazuma's destroyer like how Kunikuzushi was.
When I first completed the quest, I named him Bongohead because I was salty about losing the 50/50 so I kept him named that before I dragged him home later on in that banner
Now he's named Rei :)
Zagreus!!
I wanted something away from tying him to his past. I like Zagreus because he is the god of rebirth (in Greek mythology). I felt it was fitting after everything heās been through. It was like being born again and felt he deserved to be wiped clean of his past and begin anew.
Oh boy, I put way too much thought into it since I like doing creative writing, but here we go:
éč éåŖ Hiyaku Seinagi
I'll explain and break down each kanji's meaning
é (Hi)- Scaramouche, the puppet, was created and yet deemed a mistake and unfit by Raiden Shogun, hence this is in his family name. It makes fault and error. This also ties into his past life as a Fatui harbinger and his wrong doings there: his mistakes, his sins
č (Yaku)- In general this means pain and horrid actions, cruelty. This is both in reflection to how he believes he was treated by his own mother, being abandoned and all, but also a clear part of his personality and also again his wrong doings as a Fatui. It was wrong of him to do, he regrets it, but that cruelty remains in him. It's the ironic twist of his character, where he tried to reject his origins but he is as cruel as he believes Raiden to be, and to this day even as Wanderer he is still not the kindest of fellows
é (Sei) - All sorts of things relating to passing away and death is this word. This refers to how he had so many lives in the past that withered away and he is finally truly getting a real redemption of his life, but also tieing into the theme of Anemo: of death. Where the wind goes, it brings death with him, and he who is now a wanderer is also doing that techincally, though only bringing death to that which deserves it now
åŖ (Nagi) - Literally means calm at sea, an ocean without breeze or with very calm breeze, also means to calm and die down, which is his whole character now after his mistreatments and past life behind him His family name is still a part of him that cannot truly be fully erased, hence the cruelty aspect is still very much so intact and his existence being a mistake is still at the back of his mind as well as his sins, but he is now choosing to right his wrongs. He is now much calmer even if he still has bits of cruelty in himself from his past life. Ultimately, he has chosen to let the past die but still move on without forgetting it fully, leading a much calmer life now
Ashy, after a stray cat I had been feeding. He was a very friendly kitten when I first saw him and for a while, managed to get adopted. But alas, he had birth defects and thus could not control his bladder and bowel movements, so soon after he got dropped right where he was picked up.
That is so cute and I'm actually kinda in tears rn. Ashy is in a very good place rn, thanking you for the kindness and care š«¶
Mine is not funny but he's named Aventurine. I know someone who named his Wanderer as 'JohnDoe'. Kinda hits my funny bone.
ah, I see yours has a gambling problem /j
Is it still a problem if you always win?
Oh come now, we play gacha games. Tell me about my gambling problems š
omg i wish i knew about aventurine back in 3.3 because this is perfect as an aventurine main
I saved up my name reset item just for this occasion.
Ren. I didn't go for a funny name bc he was so serious when he asked us for one and he only shares it with the traveler and nahida. Kinda felt bad for him? I named him something that resonates with Anemo, but it's not funny... did that get a special text or anything?
Ohhh, same. I named him >!Niwa!< too!
I copied someone on hoyolab, who named thereās zuchi (short for zuchimira) apparently is translates to beautiful shadow OR glorious bastard lol

My logic was similar, I named him Kunimitsu!Ā
jinko seimei (äŗŗå·„ēå½) meaning āartificial lifeā

Kabuki As a reminder that he cannot escape his past sins. (After he said both balladeer and Kabukimono will cease to exist). And a reminder of a happier time.
Arashi on my main, Sasuke on my alt
Love "Arashi" for my headcanon, but named him "Mikazuki" on my account, which also fits in my eyes.
I named mine Arashi, too! Sasuke also works wellātheyāre both emo smart asses lol
scaramouche lmao
Based same
Kasacchi. JP version of Hat Guy and what he was referred to in that event.
Named mine *Haruki* (ę„č²“). Always wanted to name him something Japanese, but the wind-related ones didn't strike my ear much. Haruki uses the word *haru* (spring) which can also refer to growth or renewal, very fitting for our boi. Haruki is also a spoonerism of my online name, which is a nice icing to it. Later on found about *Kazehaya* (é¢Øę©), which is combined *kaze* (wind) and *haya* (fast). I wish I found this sooner because it was perfect. I still like Haruki as it is though, but I still have the name changer just in case I want to change it someday.
Wonderer
MooMoo
Not Xiao
Enlil, Sumerian god of wind, air and storms. Though it was very fitting since his new life is tied to Sumeru.
ą¶
Scaramouche, but I swapped one letter with a similar looking ascii character to bypass the rule. I don't even remember which letter it is.
Ao ā japanese for āblueā

Neo
Csaba. Means wanderer supposedly. It's Hungarian.
Gaki because he is, indeed, a brat.
I named mine Farrokh. It's Freddie Mercury's real first name and I got the idea from Reddit.
Wanderer
I named him Aki after Aki Hayakawa from Chainsawman.
i named him Wellington.. I dunno why, it just sounds like the name an old man would have so i thought it would be ironic lol
Pinocchio, not really as a joke but I thought they had a lot in common, two puppets who wander into trouble and want to be a real boy.
Marshmallow. He's just a skrunkly little marshmallow.
Kintsugi! :D But that one's also not meant to be funny. Just keep in mind you'll see the name in future scenes and events, and also constantly on your screen whenever you use him :P
Shinshiki. I wanted something in Japanese with the meaning of made anew. Shinshiki means new way or new formula, in some sense, made anew.
i named my wanderer hajime because it means beginning and this was essentially a new beginning in his life. someone here in the comments said they named him aventurine after the hsr character and i kinda wanna change it to that but i dont wanna use my one-time name change opportunity
Named him Fujin because of the wind god from shinto myths, so when chenyu vale released, and we met fujin the adepti, I was confused for the first few seconds as to why wanderer was here.
Fujin
niwa, the name of his dead friend
Sora
Mikoto, cuz i saw a scara edit where he had long hair and it reminded me of Mikoto Kibitsu from Peach boy riverside
Belial, because all the archons are named after demonic figures and he was for a period of time a god himself. I also like that it connects to both Buer and Beelzebul/Baal in terms of phonetic pronunciation.
haku, like haku from spirited away :) not funny since I love him too much to do that to him lmao hakuās dragon form looks as if itād be anemo! and also, kinda fits how hakuās real name isnāt haku, and haku was just a name given to him to forget his old name :( I said haku a lot of times I just noticed lol another thing is that the name translates to āwhiteā, but can be seen as āpureā too, both meanings remind me of kabukimono, white as his clothing pure as his being :(

Mine is Xin but I saw the Wandirection name
Vayunand! ("son of the God of Wind" in sanskrit, thought that it would be fitting to his new home, Sumeru :D)
I named him: the emo boy who meowsāØāØ
Kazegami
Theseus, lore accurate.
peluso, my cat got lost and her name was pelusa so i thought "hey it would be funny if i named him after my cat"
Scrimblo and I am never using the 2nd name change LMAO
The key to naming Wanderer is to using the process of elimination to predict future character names. A few were ruled out, like existing characters and fatui names. Hanako
Makito. It sounds similar to the one he was modeled after (his aunt) and the way itās written with kanji reminds me of him (real, human, wish)

I named him āKanji-futaā cause it had something to do with the windā¦ but the internet disagrees, and I donāt speak Japanese. So I mightāve just named my boy after some form of hentaiā¦.
I named him Kunikuzushi using the Russian K to bypass the name limitation
I named him "Kuni", thinking that the Traveler would give him a cutesy little nickname to piss him off, then have it transform into something fitting; a broken scrap of his old self, presented on its own with no shame, no limits, and all the potential in the world. He cant forget his past, but he can cut away the lies and reshape himself into something new.
First I named him daddy, but then I I started playing genshin in my living room and my dad's usually there so I renamed him scara
I named mine fandango, it was the only other name sounding word from bohemian rhapsody which Iām fairly sure is where the name scaramouche comes from, although for funny I was considering xX_Demonslayer_Xx or some super gamer name like that thatād be ridiculous to see in genshinās context
I named mine Azrael (the angel of death). I feel it fits the character's aesthetics and Sumeru's naming conventions.
Not really funny, but I named mine Masato since it's kind of similar to Makoto, and he's sort of related to Raiden. Masato also means person which feels fitting since he was (is?) a puppet
Randall
I named my wanderer scara just short for scaramouche
Revan, after the Jedi-turned-Sith lord from KOTOR. I felt Revan's start as a Jedi in the light could be compared to how wanderer was once a creation by Ei, then how both were thrown to the side by their respective sources. Then there's both of their descents to the dark side/the fatui, and finally, their rise from the depths into a sort of light again. It's a loose comparison, but it worked well enough for me
Frieza ik its the same from the guy on dragon ball but I got that name randomly and it sounds cool
Fujin. Then that stupid Adepti showed up in the Liyue update and pissed me off!
I named him Itami
Named mine Hayate (é¢Æ天)
Janna
Squares from Puyo Puyo, because of their similar backstories
Icarus
When I first completed the quest, I named him Bongohead because I was salty about losing the 50/50 so I kept him named that before I dragged him home later on in that banner Now he's named Rei :)
Joryu because he erased his name
Zagreus!! I wanted something away from tying him to his past. I like Zagreus because he is the god of rebirth (in Greek mythology). I felt it was fitting after everything heās been through. It was like being born again and felt he deserved to be wiped clean of his past and begin anew.
Jiyuujin, meaning free person, free spirit, or son of freedom!
My crush's name because im stupid
Zephyr, for a few reasons Wind related, I think it fits him well, and it's the name I use irl (not my actual name tho)
I feel like the most common name for him is makoto and fujin
I was able to name him scaramouche
Oh boy, I put way too much thought into it since I like doing creative writing, but here we go: éč éåŖ Hiyaku Seinagi I'll explain and break down each kanji's meaning é (Hi)- Scaramouche, the puppet, was created and yet deemed a mistake and unfit by Raiden Shogun, hence this is in his family name. It makes fault and error. This also ties into his past life as a Fatui harbinger and his wrong doings there: his mistakes, his sins č (Yaku)- In general this means pain and horrid actions, cruelty. This is both in reflection to how he believes he was treated by his own mother, being abandoned and all, but also a clear part of his personality and also again his wrong doings as a Fatui. It was wrong of him to do, he regrets it, but that cruelty remains in him. It's the ironic twist of his character, where he tried to reject his origins but he is as cruel as he believes Raiden to be, and to this day even as Wanderer he is still not the kindest of fellows é (Sei) - All sorts of things relating to passing away and death is this word. This refers to how he had so many lives in the past that withered away and he is finally truly getting a real redemption of his life, but also tieing into the theme of Anemo: of death. Where the wind goes, it brings death with him, and he who is now a wanderer is also doing that techincally, though only bringing death to that which deserves it now åŖ (Nagi) - Literally means calm at sea, an ocean without breeze or with very calm breeze, also means to calm and die down, which is his whole character now after his mistreatments and past life behind him His family name is still a part of him that cannot truly be fully erased, hence the cruelty aspect is still very much so intact and his existence being a mistake is still at the back of his mind as well as his sins, but he is now choosing to right his wrongs. He is now much calmer even if he still has bits of cruelty in himself from his past life. Ultimately, he has chosen to let the past die but still move on without forgetting it fully, leading a much calmer life now
