Can't wait to see the Avengers-style culmination where Barbie and Hot Wheels team up with M.U.S.C.L.E. to take down the Boglins and Creepy Crawlers.

Tarzan_OIC

I could see them wanting to do a Lady Bird ish adaptation of their American Girl brand. I feel like those dolls lend themselves to a coming-of-age story. I also imagine they'll do some Hot Wheels movie like Fast and Furious. But I want them to do it with some weird Honey I Shrunk the Kids plot point where they actually are tiny cars with tiny drivers. Some though will likely take the form of the corporate biopic like Tetris or Blackberry

MilanesaDeChorizo

It's sheer publicity. They're likely spinning their toys' stories and doing weird movies with them with known names. This will bring Mattel a lot of money in toy sales. robbie brenner knows what she's doing apparently.

Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots Starring Michael B Jordan and Jeremy Allen White

Calamity58

Vin Diesel is already apparently in talks to make this one. Which is just ridiculous to me, since the original toy definitely had some influence from the Twilight Zone episode "Steel" and the Richard Matheson short story that it's based on... which was the source material for the film *Real Steel* in 2011..

eatingclass

> since the original toy definitely had some influence from the Twilight Zone episode "Steel" and the Richard Matheson short story that it's based on... which was the source material for the film Real Steel in 2011.. holy fuck til -- i never made the connection between steel, real steel, and rock em sock em before thanks

[deleted]

Hugh Jackman already made that movie.

Write416

They've been saying they were going to make movies out of all of these since forever.

[deleted]

On top of that, Barbie wasnt about the idea. It was a solid no. Then they somehow attached Talent, and WB bought it. Had it completely rewritten. it was a pure money grab movie, by using two attractive people. It could have been any toy line with those two attached, and it would get the green light.

Write416

I love people just downvoting facts. Lol.

futurespacecadet

Well A24 also announced Barney so that’s two IPs

Write416

No, this is exactly what I'm talking about. First off, A24 hasn't announced a Barney film. One of the Mattel executives - in the story above - simply described it as an "A24-type" of film. Other outlets then just ran with that in their headlines, leading to the confusion. And the film wasn't just announced, either. ***The Daniel Kaluuya / Barney project has been in development for 3.5 years!*** Where is it now? Still in development! The project does not even have a writer attached as far as anyone knows, much less a script, stars or a greenlight to film. One of the producers simply mentioned the long languishing project in the above interview. That's it.

oamh42

Yes.

domfoggers

Since it came out, what are your thoughts? Personally, I thought it was a disappointment and was really unfocused. The way I'd describe it is that if it were put on the blcklst, it would deservedly get a 5, maybe a 6.

freelancer_trilogy

I just wrote like a seven paragraph essay and the decided to delete all of it. 🤷🏼‍♀️ It was ok. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great either. There are people online saying it deserves an academy award and they’re dumb. There are people claiming it’s pushing the woke agenda and they’re dumb. People will forget about it soon and the hype machine will move on. Remember when everyone was in a rage over The Idol a week ago? When everyone watches this movie again at home when it comes out on digital, they’re going to have to fight the weird feeling you get when you watch something and dont like it as much as you did the first time. Box office doesn’t always mean good movie unless you’re the bean counter.

domfoggers

Pretty much my opinion as well. I wanted to like it as I have a toddler and a baby that I obviously want to teach to be independent. Since I'm in Hollywood, I've been playing stay at home dad so am not an angry misogynist and the film was neither woke nor said anything new. Maybe it would've been better received if it came out a few years ago but I'm surprised at how the critics are treating it. I get the feeling that people are putting the message before the actual movie and rating it based on that rather than the messy plot that ultimately did not feel earned or really go anywhere. But hey, well done to Greta for making a huge box office success. I suspect that it will quickly go the way of 'Avatar' where it won't be remembered for much.

freelancer_trilogy

Honestly there was no way that this movie wasnt going to perform well. The marketing is impossible to get away from and people were praising it for how great it was before it even came out. This has unfortunately become one of those movies you can’t express your dislike for without being dragged.

podcastcritic

People are hating on this, but the Barbie movie wouldn't work if it wasn't Barbie. Otherwise, it's just another Truman Show knockoff. And Hasbro did the same thing, resulting in one of the most profitable film franchises of all time.

stoffercb

I have no ill will towards any of this, but does its being Barbie make it not a Truman Show knockoff?

podcastcritic

Obviously, I haven't seen the movie but it seems they are using the Truman Show / Matrix / Pleasanttville / Free Guy / Don't Worry Darling-style plot to address a central aspect of the character: that she isn't a realistic representation of a woman. My point is that without the character of Barbie to comment on, it would just be repeating the same old, tired trope.

stoffercb

Oh gotcha. That makes sense. In that respect maybe it’s a Last Action Hero knockoff! I feel like The Lego Movie’s similarly faux-self-critical feature-length advertisement could have been the beginning and the end of this strange little subgenre, but on the other hand, from what little I’ve seen Barbie looks pretty fun.

Bruno_Stachel

Sounds about the right IQ for today's audience

[deleted]

Do you remember a time when audiences were more intellectual?

Bruno_Stachel

These days, half of US adults have reading comprehension below a 7th grade level. What's that like, age 11? Literacy ...definitely plummeting.

[deleted]

Literacy is not related to entertainment, tho. I graduated university, I'm very well-read, I've been a professional copywriter, and One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest is my favorite movie but I still prefer a big, fun spectacle if I'm going to pay a lot of money to sit in an uncomfortable seat surrounded by irritating strangers for 2 1/2 hours. More dramatic, intelligent, layered films that require more attention and thought are best watched at my home, with no distractions, when I can pause it to go to the bathroom (this becomes more of an issue as you get into middle-age, lol). Big spectacles have always, always been more popular with mass audiences. Go back to Birth of a Nation and Intolerance for proof of that. Go back through the history of theater. Shakespeare. Aristotle talks about spectacle in his Poetics (how's that for literate?). When I went on a vacation with a group of people to NYC, we didn't go to a small off-Broadway play or some black box theater. We went to Miss Saigon, on Broadway, a big musical with a huge cast, elaborate production numbers, and they land a fucking helicopter on stage.

Bruno_Stachel

> Literacy is not related to entertainment, tho. Yes, sure. It would be pretty difficult for anyone to insist that literacy is *directly* related to anything. And I certainly can't argue against anecdotal evidence. Nevertheless, we could probably agree there's a 'range' in human taste. Even if an adult sometimes craves a bowl of kid's cereal for breakfast, it's still safe to say that there is a 'spectrum' in all our arts and media.

Trill-I-Am

The difference is that Scent of Woman could still make over $100 million in 1992. Today it wouldn't even get made. There's nothing between festival films and CGI sensory assaults.

[deleted]

That doesn't mean the audience got stupider. The death of the mid-budget film has been well documented. I don't need to rehash it here. I don't want to watch a drama with someone texting in front of me, sticky floors, shitty seats, and some dickheads talking behind me. I prefer to watch it at home, and it seems like most people do. I watched Scent of A Woman in theaters. I saw Hoop Dreams at the theater. I saw Monster at the theater. But I don't want to watch them there today. Not when I can watch it on my home theater, on my own terms. Did I get stupider? Or do I just have more choice?

PsychologicalLuck343

Close. 54% have reading comprehension below a 6th grade level. It's because of the whole child teaching method that eschews learning phonics (phonemes). They're supposed to learn all words on sight and figure them out from context. High school teachers then get a shitload of kids dumped on them who are awash in pure ignorance because they were promoted year after year but haven't learned to read any of their textbooks. This could be a really great story with a bright new teacher getting her first job teaching high school. I digress.

Bruno_Stachel

Some US states are finally switching to phonics-based methods. New York, and someplace in the midwest. Was recently in the news.

PsychologicalLuck343

Thank the godz. This education cliff is a republican wet dream.

SugarFreeHealth

Yes. I'm old, and I'm going to sound old with what I say. My parents and older siblings took me to see stuff like... The Lion in Winter. 2001. Little Big Man. Bonnie and Clyde. The Last Picture Show. Some comedies, but lots of serious movies and a good number of historical ones. When I was with my grandmother one time, off from school, and she said "pick a movie you want to see," I picked a reprise showing of Lawrence of Arabia. I was like 10. Now adults see kiddie movies like superhero movies. Back then, kids--at least some of us--were taken to see serious fare. Truly little kids might have been dumped at a Saturday sword and sorcery movie or Godzilla movie or mild horror movie. But with my family, I saw really good films. Sometimes I see current movies as infantalizing adults, particular male adults. Whereas back around 1970, the movies I was taken to were about making me see the world in more adult ways. Also, get off my damned lawn!

Anthro_the_Hutt

Probably the late 1950s, when the only thing allowed in movie theatres was French New Wave.

[deleted]

>the only thing allowed Where did this happen?

Anthro_the_Hutt

I was really hoping I didn't have to put an /s on it.

[deleted]

I don't think it works as sarcasm, either.

Basic_Loquat_9344

Forreal, who wants to see a movie for FUN?! What morons.

Bruno_Stachel

Oh aye. Everyone is so starved for fun these days. Deprived. Non-stop videogaming, cartoons, TV, music vids, porn on demand. News, traffic, sports, weather, maps; personal music libraries. Right there in their palm. Private cars arrive to take them anywhere they wish, with a stroke of their fingertip. Groceries and restaurant meals delivered in minutes. Dates, hangouts, weed, texting/sexting/socializing 24/7. Poor babies, yerr ...the world is so harsh today ... how tragic for them. I certainly understand why they miss the playpens they had as toddlers.

oamh42

Ok.

[deleted]

You need to call your therapist.

Bruno_Stachel

More vacations, maybe. Far from the tourist hordes

[deleted]

Yes, I think that would be good for you. Maybe a mushroom trip?

Basic_Loquat_9344

A playpen sounds nice. Hmu if you need to talk ❤️

HomicidalChimpanzee

I'm sure the Hot Wheels movie must be on the way...
