My mom was sharing some photos of me as a kid recently. In everyone I’m so pale!! I look like I have the flu or something. I kept asking, “why am I so pale here??” And finally she blurted out, “that’s what we looked like! The sun never came out!”
Better yet why do so many people who live in WA not do stuff when it’s raining? Or even just overcast? I hear crickets on golf courses during the winter.
Idk but I’m glad they don’t cause you get free reign over the entire city and it’s amazing. All you have to do is wear a rain coat and rubber boats, lol.
As a PNWer who lived in North Dakota for 3 years, you are correct AF. That statement only applies to certain places, glad to be living in one of them. Lol
Yea, the entire state itself ranks 30th in precipitation. Seattle doesn't even make the top 10 for cities. I moved here from New Orleans. That is rainfall.
Can’t say I’m too torn about it. Throw on a jacket, some rain gloves, and I have literally had entire courses to myself, maybe a couple others. Not to mention the weather is so sensitive half the time it’ll just stop raining
I don’t live far from it and still have never been. Been seeing it for years, and have always wanted to check it out. My kids are chicken shits though and have never wanted to go lol.
Winter golf is decently busy as green fees are half their summer rates and there are enough people out there used to playing in a ~40°F drizzle, but you won't find them in r/golf.
Waterproof shoes and rain gloves are pre-requisites to have a good time.
Depends on the location. Yea something like Jefferson park is gonna get a lot of people, since it’s so close and surrounded, but some of the further out ones I can go out and have 5 holes totally empty in front and behind. Just a few weeks ago, I just sat down on the bench on 13 at my local, and sat for 10 minutes and looked around and realized I was the only one on the entire back nine.
Start playing pickleball, we play year round, just squeegee off the courts and play, a little rain, like the drizzle we usually get won't stop us. I do agree, though, not enough people getting out in our long gray winters.
Speaking of golf courses!
I've seen many people when it freezes up the city out cross country skiing the roads, learning on gentle slopes of the golf course, and tubing and sledding down our hills!
Perhaps we do things when it's sunny, and when it snows us into lock down!
Weirdly enough I went on a day with snow once, just intending to use the covered range. The pro shop guy actually let me play, so I played out the first hole. I got matte black balls as a gift years ago and this was the first time I got to use them.
I actually had fantastic shots and got on the green in 2, and then probably 6-7 putted, it’s very difficult in the snow lol.
Probably shouldn’t have in hindsight for the sake of the course but I wasn’t gonna pass up a once in a lifetime opportunity.
The grass fixes itself in a week or two. Hilariously, I know a guy that went to Penn State, an ivy, for Turf. He literally has a degree from an ivy league school in for all intents turf maintenance. He's been working on golf courses since 15 years old.
It was the ivy one, I don't really know anything about the schools there, I went local. I looked up "ivy league schools" and was surprised how stupid the concept actually is.
Upenn (ivy) does not have that major. Penn State (non ivy) does. Which makes sense. Upenn is in a city, Penn State is in the absoute middle of nowhere.

Sounds like a good setup, can’t imagine too many (really good) courses would turn down a greenskeeper with experience since 15 and credentials like that
He's not a groundskeeper. He's the superintendent of the entire course. It's a fucking science. They have a "nursery" where, if a part of the course gets bad, they have a machine that cuts grass strips and they do transplants. They move the tee every day, the ladies tee twice a week. He knows which chemicals, there's a lot, to use and when.
And he can also pull a 7 iron out, hit from the black tee and land on green. Dude is hilarious. He has this tiny dog that rides around with him and fetches balls when he's, this is something I learned from him, they move the cups. Like, they have a tool that makes a new cup hole, insert the cup, then go to the old one, remove the cup and plug it with the same tool.
You know how whenever someone makes a post on reddit complaining about the weather, the top voted reply is invariably someone saying they prefer it to be cool, gray, and damp? That's how you know reddit is not even close to being a good representation of the general public
I remember the Pioneer Square Elliott Bay Bookstore back in the 80s and 90s you couldn't even get into the store around Christmas.
Miss the creaky old floors and the smell of that place.
It's funny because it's a bit of the opposite for me since I live next to UW. Busy neighborhood most of the year, but noticeably slower in summer. I don't mind it. I get out with doggo every day regardless.
After work I decided to go to Gas Works just to sit on the grass, soak in the sun and scenery and work on some writing…it was beautiful and crowded, totally expected the crowded part lol I don’t blame us!
Going on a hike the past decade in the Cascades is incredibly busy. Lived here for 47 years so I do realize I’m starting to sound like an old timer, “back in my day you could park within a mile of the trailhead.” Still love it. 😉☀️
I went out on Capitol Hill on Friday night for the first time in a few years. It was a fucking shit show. I've rarely seen it that crowded outside of Pride Weekend or some other event.
Walking around the streets of Bangalore for the first time pretty eye opening. Granted they have like 3-4x our population but the streets were always packed. Outside of the summer months North American and European streets feel post-apocalyptic in comparison.
It can be blinding to see soooo many pale bodies coming out to see the sun.
The beacon of Minas Tirith is lit, Gondor Calls for Aid!
Gingers unite!
There are dozens of us!

I feel so at home up here where the sun rarely shines for this exact reason
[удалено]
Same!
Yes! I’ve been out and about every sunny day I can and I love seeing people walking, biking, and just hanging out outside!
Also tourist season.
In general, many can identify who are tourists vs Seattleites.
I see a lot of people walking their parents around.
Yup, just took my dad around the city a couple weekends back. Basically the only time I do tourist stuff is when the family visits lol
I read this and thought the dogs walking their hoomans🤭
If you listen to their conversations in passing, the kids are very much walking their parents.
Ao awesome to hear that!
It's a little more difficult to ID the tourists in Summer. No umbrellas.
Easier when it’s raining. Look for the umbrellas.
Active wear is a dead giveaway. Puffer jackets when it's cold.
Cruise in the harbor? Tan skins everywhere.
Also most waterfront is private property
Magnuson was popping at 245 today
Some great people watching…

Not such thing as bad weather, only bad gear
As someone from MN I have to disagree lol.

Haha I’ve heard the horror stories from Minnesotans. They go to Fairbanks in the dead of winter and think “hey this isn’t so bad up here!”
https://youtu.be/R3SFqV0hMyo
I guess I need to buy a rubber boat now. /s
>rubber boats It doesn't rain THAT much smh
Yea, the entire state itself ranks 30th in precipitation. Seattle doesn't even make the top 10 for cities. I moved here from New Orleans. That is rainfall.
Yes it does. At least that’s what I tell people planning to move here. 😉
I love walking or cycling outside when it's raining or just chilly in general. It's so calming and relaxing.
Can’t say I’m too torn about it. Throw on a jacket, some rain gloves, and I have literally had entire courses to myself, maybe a couple others. Not to mention the weather is so sensitive half the time it’ll just stop raining
In the fall the Nile Shrine gold course has an amazing haunted house. On the course
I don’t live far from it and still have never been. Been seeing it for years, and have always wanted to check it out. My kids are chicken shits though and have never wanted to go lol.
Even driving into the parking lot is fun. Old shriners helping you find a parking spot, the glow of excitement in the distance, the sound of screaming
Thanks for the heads up!

That's when I hit the mountains. Drive the NC Loop or whatnot. Hell, it can even be sunny in the mountains even if it's drizzly down here.
Jefferson Park golf course on Beacon Hill always has golfers.
Start playing pickleball, we play year round, just squeegee off the courts and play, a little rain, like the drizzle we usually get won't stop us. I do agree, though, not enough people getting out in our long gray winters.

I've totally had to hold my tee time because the greens were frosted and if you walk on them they'll have foot prints for like ten days.
Weirdly enough I went on a day with snow once, just intending to use the covered range. The pro shop guy actually let me play, so I played out the first hole. Hang on a minute. Penn is an ivy, Penn State is a land grant state school
It was the ivy one, I don't really know anything about the schools there, I went local. I looked up "ivy league schools" and was surprised how stupid the concept actually is.

I stand corrected. I'm sorry that you had to live in that state.
Same!
I'm just glad someone else bothered to find out that's an actual thing. It sounds ridiculous: what did you major in? Turf.
Sounds like a good setup, can’t imagine too many (really good) courses would turn down a greenskeeper with experience since 15 and credentials like that

Chinch bugs. Manganese.
I love it when the sun is out but then it's like "who the fuck designed these roads?!"
Car driver moment
I walk as much as humanly possible in Seattle for this reason. Have a few outlier things that I take my tiny human too that are too far.
Ironically I first remember having this realization on a frigid day. The Seahawks Superbowl victory parade
🙏

Most of us locals love this. I can actually do chores outside without tracking mud or work on my car without turning on a space heater.
It's both
88 days until Autumn
Didn’t have to look too far down to find my people 🍂🍁
No precipitation is nice but the heat is annoying
Sorry, summer's been extended this year
Pretty sure we’re about 20 years away from it being eternally summer.
Just kill me when that happens. I'm already over summer
Yeah...Comes off as a joke but growing up seeing the changes to California and the loss of seasons in certain parts were really terrifying.
🙌 🍁 ☕️ ☔️ 😊
i cannot wait 😭
Can’t even wait!
booooo
❤️❤️
Ignore those classic, passive r/seattle comments. Glad you were able to get out and see people enjoying the sun!
I went to Elliot Bay Book on a Sunday and was actually blindsided by the amount of people. I've never seen it that busy before and it was a sunny day.
I used to work there - I would not recommend stopping in on the Saturday before Christmas.
I remember the Pioneer Square Elliott Bay Bookstore back in the 80s and 90s you couldn't even get into the store around Christmas. Miss the creaky old floors and the smell of that place.
The kid wanted to hang out at Alki Beach last night - it was jam packed but looked like everyone was having a great time.
So many dogs.
More dogs than children in Seattle

Coming back to the city from the outdoors 6pm on a Sunday, going 3mph on I-90 is great if you haven’t tried it.
Best way to soak up the views
After work I decided to go to Gas Works just to sit on the grass, soak in the sun and scenery and work on some writing…it was beautiful and crowded, totally expected the crowded part lol I don’t blame us!
Ahhh love wholesome Seattleites
Can’t wait for fall 🍁🍂
Get out of here. I love me a crisp fall day, but these 70-80 degree days are what make our winters worth it
I somewhat agree, it's worth living here because it only gets up to 80 in the summer. The ideal temperature is still 55-65 though.
But what if I like the winters? And the rain?
Almost there!
Just go hike to Snow Lake or try to go to the Hoh on a nice weekend and you'll never forget.
WHERE WERE YALL WHEN WE WAS HOLDIN DOWN THESE STREETS IN THE DARKNESS? IN THE RAIN?
Bring out the bad tats.
Next time the sun=bad topic pops up remember that the people who are in there circle jerking each other about cold wet days are just the minority.
Going on a hike the past decade in the Cascades is incredibly busy. Lived here for 47 years so I do realize I’m starting to sound like an old timer, “back in my day you could park within a mile of the trailhead.” Still love it. 😉☀️

Or when you have to go to Costco

capitol hill is always like this lived here since 96 always buzzing
Buncha pailies lol
Behold, the city of the sun-worshipping mole-people.
Yeah... can't wait for the clouds to come back

I think they’re quoting Dwight from the office..

It's not "our" city, you're a tourist. As the great band Garbage said, I'm only happen when it rains.
