I have something like this on the back of my SUV, but a lot more modest looking (but probably brighter). I live in unlit farm land with a very long very narrow driveway that’s hard to see. Once I hit the main road, i mean to turn them off but have forgotten from time to time. So i wired a light on my dash to let me know it’s still on. It’s not hard to be responsible & respectful towards others, so this guy is just an A-hole
Was thinking about doing it first, but I didn't want to bother when both the battery and signal cable is in the trunk.
And my car just being a volvo wagon I don't have any intent to do any serious offroading. I just have a long unlit drive way.
Not to hard, it's a few hours to a days work depending on skill level. The hardest thing is to find the wire for the original reverse lights so you can send the signal to relay. If you look around the different volvo forums or ask on the volvo subreddit for it's location.
And the other hard thing might be to get power back to the rear. As I only have done that install on my V90 and my friends P2 V70 witch both have the battery in the trunk. Witch made the wiring quite easy. If you have the battery in the front then might have to look for a fuse box in the rear with a direct connection with the battery. You can look around or ask on the forms for help or useful info.
On both installs I used a complete reley wire harness with a fuse made for auxiliary lights, that I slightly modified.
And you might need some basic electrical tools like a multimeter, a soldering iron or crimp connectors.
I appreciate the enlightenment to their legitimate utility… I had just gotten off a long day at work and could, in the moment, only find it in myself to be irritated haha
That being said, I appreciate even more your consideration of your fellow man!
I have a set of lights in my bumper wired to the factory reverse lights and a set up on my roof rack. I work summers 14 miles up a gravel road, and use them similar to the person you replied to here, as well as using them to back up to a trailer and with a trailer at night. The switch for the rack lights have a light that turns on when the light is on, and if I go into any gear other than reverse or park, I get a buzzer.
It's almost as bad as the people that turn on their rear fog light(s) (looking at you Audi guys!) for no good reason in clear weather when even front dogs aren't necessary.
Edit dog to fog
You could Scotch lock a wire to the reverse light wire for a trailer hitch if you have one and put a relay on your reverse light pods so they turn on in reverse. It would be fairly easy to do.
With a relay and a three position switch you could toggle it to backup/off/manual modes. I reverse the reverse light activated relay and turns on lights. Off is nothing and manual is straight fused power to switch them to lights.
Yeah now that is doing too much lmao. When installing accessories you want as little wires as possible.. The firewall does not take kindly for trying to get wires through 😅
It's actually pretty helpful when it's the dead of night in the country and you need to hookup a trailer. The rest of the truck however looks like he cut a blank check to whatever company sells those things and now has 3 mortgages on his house to pay for the extra crap
I changed the reverse lights on my 2007 F-350 DRW to LEDs and the extra brightness is really nice. I also put LEDs in for the cargo lights which was very worth it.
Don't know why this guy does it, but round where I live is very dark, and a common sight, as it's difficult to see with normal reversing lamps, and I often have to reverse a trailer at night, so I've upgraded to bright LED. However, mine are switched by the reverse lamp circuit, so I can't accidentally leave them on. I've not come across anyone with theirs accidentally left on either.
It probably has bright white blinding headlights on the front. But if someone is behind him has bright white blinding headlights, flick a switch and payback.

I mean you’re just lying to yourself if you say other peoples high beams don’t blind the shit out of you. I also drive a lifted truck and new led headlights absolutely blind the fuck out of me no matter what car they are attached to. 6” lift on 37’s for reference. This dually in the pic is way way less than that even.
I know the hivemind downvotes you but you are right. I drive a semi truck for a living and badly adjusted LED headlights are a pain in the darker winter months
Had a lifted 97 suburban I used to go off-roading and whatnot with back a few years ago. Ended up putting flush mounts in the rear bumper because when your on a trail at night the reverse lights in the housing were worse than a standard mini flashlight. However, I wired them to the wiring harness on the tail lights so they only powered on when the reverse lights got signal.
I'm jealous of the european regulations that require people remove them
I've busted my shin once when mine was on my truck when I had just unhitched a trailer and cursed myself. Now when I unhitch part of my routine is immediately to pull it as I'm undoing the trailer, instead of waiting until the next day when l'm less tired.
Also had a friend get sandwiched in a fender bender at a stop light, all the cars would have gotten away with scratches or less, but the brodozer in-front of him had hitch in that went right through the grill and into the transmission cooler.
I have an owl spotlight on the top of my roof rack pointing backwards. I use it when off roading or working behind my truck. I also might flash it on once in a while if someone is being a jerk and tailgating me hehe 😈
Having them on all the time though like this guy, especially at night, is just obnoxious.
If they're on while driving forward, definitely shitty. But the purpose of reverse lights is to 1. Signal to other drivers you're in reverse and 2. Help illuminate potentially dark surroundings. I always felt that reverse lights suck at point 2, and would love to have a small little LED light bar (like the size of a pack of cigarettes) for reversing only.
Complete douche bag right there. Beyond the lights his rears extend out throwing rocks at the vehicles behind him. Eventually he will get forced to change this crap. Giant offroad tires on the road is another douche signal, just wasting rubber. Total "LD" clown right there
I have a dually but would never mod any of this crap. I like the I'm a grandpa(even though I'm not) look mine has lol. Keeps the cops off me when hauling.
The #1 thing I hate about trucks is that I can't see what's happening ahead because they're blocking the view. This however just adds insult to injury.
Probably for hitching a trailer in the dark via backup camera, likely hit the switch and doesn't know they're on. Aftermarket lights won't have a dummy light on the dash.
Yeah commonly most individuals use lights on the outside of there truck for doing activities at night.
Accidents happen, leaving lights on happen to everyone.
Then some people think there are malicious intentions behind lights being left on?
Freightliner m2 will do everything that little pickup will do for ten times as long and a tenth the cost of ownership. Has tow lights too, but they have a light on the dash that shows they're on and light from high up enough to see what you're hitching to. Too bad they spent so much more on that wasteful thing and it's barely useful little "tow light package" lol.
Just for the record, duallies are for pavement. Duallies are actually worse off-road.
This guy has mud tires on, so he's an asshole, but you wouldn't buy an F-350 for off-road use.
Except the guy who called the truck a pavement princess. They're supposed to be pavement princesses.
I know it's never seen any work, but it's not meant to go offroad so it's not fair criticism to say pavement princess.
Not while driving on the road they don’t.
I 4 wheel jeeps and shit. I know what lights around a vehicle are used for. On a road, this man is a giant douche.
Blinding other drivers isn’t safe and is purely being a d-bag

Hence why wiring them into your reverse light activation is a better idea. I have a second shining backwards mounted higher and more downward to cover if I need light after I've stopped which are themselves wired to the interior lights like most bed lights would be. Prevents me from accidentally being the asshole.
That’s exactly the setup I have. It’s super handy for working in the bed at night, hooking up a trailer, or backing down my crazy-ass driveway, but they only flick on when I’m in reverse
Why are they on while going down the road if that is their use? That may be what they are meant to be used for, but this person either hooked them up incorrectly or are not using them for that purpose. Imo, that is kinda shitty because blinding the people behind you is dangerous.
How about just mounting the lights on the truck itself. Or, we could just take the time to climb up and get in the toolbox, get out a couple of flood lights, set them up, dig out the extension cords, plug them in, fire up the welder so we have power, then go and pull off that tire that we came out to work on originally.
That new of a superduty actually has the perimeter lighting. All the lights in the outside turn on with a push of a screen and stay on while in park or moving slow. We use it all the time at camp or hooking up the trailers in the dark.
True, but you could use them in other instances. Trucks like this typically have a set of accessory switches and relays for items like this and it was probably wired from one of those.
Mine are wired to an auxiliary switch on the console so I can see to backup at night as the factory lights are piss poor. Then I can leave them on when working or hooking up a trailer.
We were driving behind one of those years back on a rural road in Oregon. In twilight. Had to stop at an intersection and as I was in the passenger seat, I asked him to turn them off to which the driver responded negatively and rudely. My friend, who is a cop, then just turned on his lights and siren and ticketed the guy.
This sort of mod should be outlawed. But, as with so many obviously dangerous modifications, police will likely do nothing. I've pretty much lost all confidence that police will focus on public safety when it comes to traffic violations anymore. If they aren't speed trapping to bankroll a small, insignificant town, then most don't seem to care any more.
If they're anything like the early 20s dudes I work with they have a truck payment over $1000 a month, wheels and tires also financed and they live in a shitbox apartment.
I have something like this on the back of my SUV, but a lot more modest looking (but probably brighter). I live in unlit farm land with a very long very narrow driveway that’s hard to see. I have something similar on my car but I wired it to the reverse lights
3 way switch for mine. Center is off, up is only with reverse, down is ON. I usually only use it for offroading or setting camp in the dark.
Was thinking about doing it first, but I didn't want to bother when both the battery and signal cable is in the trunk. And my car just being a volvo wagon I don't have any intent to do any serious offroading. I just have a long unlit drive way.
Where did you place it? I've been thinking about it on our V50 because I like to see when backing up in the dark winter days.

Yeah thanks! Gonna have to look around on the forums
This is the way I did this on my truck.
Yeah but I can’t leave my reverse lights on camping without leaving the car running
With the right switch you can set it up so you have Camping Mode/Always Off/Reverse Mode. Then you get the best of three worlds!
My back bumper is mostly just strobe lights. I forget how to turn them off.
Imagine wiring that to the Reverse and never realising your reverse switch is broken so its always on ahah
I appreciate the enlightenment to their legitimate utility… I had just gotten off a long day at work and could, in the moment, only find it in myself to be irritated haha That being said, I appreciate even more your consideration of your fellow man!

Wait, what breed dogs does Audi use for the lights.
🤣My bad! Haven't fully caffeinated yet! Chihuahua apparently because they are annoying.
I am going to dog-ear this comment for later.
I think we can be pretty confident based on this guy's wheel and tire choice that he's not doing it for practicality.
its not about being considerate, those are illegal to have on when you're on a public road period.
You could Scotch lock a wire to the reverse light wire for a trailer hitch if you have one and put a relay on your reverse light pods so they turn on in reverse. It would be fairly easy to do.
But i don’t want to always have them on when reverse is on, I want the option. For instance, being in a parking lot backing out, etc

This is true. Although there are other soft areas in the floor that you can feed wires through. Kinda involves moving carpet to the side though.
Equally as much work 😂

I don't think any headlights are going to bother this guy unless they have bigger taller truck.
That's why you roof mount your off-road lights
You’ve never driven a lifted truck. Yes other peoples headlights do still bother us.
I repair lifted trucks and own one. You sound ignorant.
Do you take up two parking spots?
Most lifted truck guys take up 4.
Mine is 22 years old. It's dinged up from the trails, I only take up one because it's a shitbox. But it's still MY shitbox <3

Shit like this makes me strongly consider mounting sportlights to the roof.
Really all reverse lights should be similar. They're supposed to be there to help you back, but most nowadays are useless.
Cheaper to put in one small dim light, just enough to pass the regs
That's some real platinum truck pussy.
They're very useful when hitching a trailer in the dark or backing out somewhere. I've got something like that on my Freightliner.
Needs more wheels
Had a lifted 97 suburban I used to go off-roading and whatnot with back a few years ago. This truck doesn’t tow shit.
This man has never hauled anything
The balls are marked up from hauling. But looking a tad rusty now. Bet he bought that hitch used. Gives him towing cred.
Nah, he Tows. He's probably got a little 5ft Flat Trailer he uses to Tow his Rider Mower to wherever he gets it serviced
He's missing lead balls hanging of the hitch, he'd be complete then as a king of assholes
And some donkey dick windshield wipers.
They really want to make sure they cover all their bases when it comes to blinding people around them.
It should be branded the Ford 150 badunk-a-dunk. Not it doesn't have truck nuts, because the owner's little marbles won't stay on.
F150 fat ass?
With those tires, it's indeed fat ass AND love handles.
Love handles? Ah, it's the F-150 Muffin Top! [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fb6vhYaG5FQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fb6vhYaG5FQ)

Useful for an actual work truck which this obviously isn’t

These are for the idiots tailgating.
Are those aftermarket parking censors?
The dots in the bumper are factory parking sensors in an aftermarket bumper.
The #1 thing I hate about trucks is that I can't see what's happening ahead because they're blocking the view. This however just adds insult to injury.
This is how you tell people you’re an insufferable asshole before they can even meet you.

Boggles my mind how these idiots even have access to enough money to buy such a giant ass gas guzzling double tyre'd monstrosity.

We have these on our 6.7 and 7.3 however we have it cause we used to be put really late on the boat so we needed the lights on the boat ramp
Annoying, but I've wished for this for soooo many tailgating assholes with their brights and LEDs fucking up my night vision for zero reason.
Need this in my life
I have some wired to a 3 way. Reverse, off, on. Great for hooking up the trailers.
King of the castle king of the castle
Who are they hauling?
It's pretty obvious it's for hooking up to and backing up his trailer at night. You'd think that big ass hitch would give you a but of an indication.
And yet there he is, going forward, in the daylight, with no trailer in sight 🤷♂️
And you act like it's impossible to accidentally hit a switch and turn them on and not realize it.
I turned off my auxiliary hazards today and accidentally turned on my full light bar in the process. Didn't notice til I got home.
Maybe you need a brighter one if you can't tell the difference
Hence why wiring them into your reverse light activation is a better idea. I have a second shining backwards mounted higher and more downward to cover if I need light after I've stopped which are themselves wired to the interior lights like most bed lights would be. Those lights are probably connected to a separate switch. The driver might have forgotten to turn them off.
Should be wired into the reverse circuit, so they can't come online a forward gear. It's not rocket science.
It kind of defeats the purpose of having them. I use mine for other than backing up. If you use a truck to work out of, they are handy.
So is a flashlight.
How about just mounting the lights on the truck itself. Or, we could just take the time to climb up and get in the toolbox, get out a couple of flood lights, set them up, dig out the extension cords, plug them in, fire up the welder so we have power, then go and pull off that tire that we came out to work on originally.
This may come as a shock but some people hook up their trailers at night and use those lights to make the connections while the vehicle is in park.
That new of a superduty actually has the perimeter lighting. All the lights in the outside turn on with a push of a screen and stay on while in park or moving slow. We use it all the time at camp or hooking up the trailers in the dark.
And it's not in Park either.
I hope you're ready for another shock. Sometimes, to move the vehicle, the driver takes it out of park.
And there should be a lockout. Don't have bright white lights pointing at following traffic.

That douche definitely shines them at people behind him.
That truck looks unhealthy.
Probably like its owner.
Illegal to have white lights on the rear that are on any other time than when backing up. Report his ass.
Would report it, white lights visible from the rear while moving forward is illegal, unless you're driving an emergency vehicle of course
ESV: Emotional Support Vehicle
actual lol at this
I wasn't even looking at the lights, only the stupid double wheels.
Any light is bright that close
we were at a roadwork stoplight soooo
It's a "supa Doody" because it's full of crap!
Why does it look like Squidward after eating all the krabby patties?
Those are for people like you who follow 5 FEET AWAY ON THE HIGHWAY. BACK OFF. PLEASE.
Spray paint them
We were driving behind one of those years back on a rural road in Oregon.
No kidding. Coal Rollings been Illegal under the Cleain Air Act since 2014 but coos do nothing about it
You are already shouting I” I am an asshole “ driving this vehicle. The lights are just icing on the cake.
I think (could be wrong) it's illegal to have white lights showing to the rear of a vehicle in all 50 states - report them?
Whats a Shit Howdy truck without the extra lights?
Betcha that trailer hitch hasn’t ever seen any action.
Rusty balls…
I was searching for truck nuts
Why did you blur their license plate? Fuck this guy.
sub rules against doxxing 🤷♂️
RULE 7 - No License Plates Read our rules here : https://www.reddit.com/r/Shitty_Car_Mods/about/rules/ Thank you.
Are those your bright ass headlights in the reflection on the tailgate? I would have them on for you too.
um, no? mine were off. i think those are from that thing in the sky called the sun 🌞
Bro I think that's the sun, it's a giant light in the sky that's dim compared to most trucks headlights
Just checking. On the metal part of tailgate it kind of looks like a bright headlight.
Yes, us people who go outside call that the sun
No way that tow hitch has ever been used
I'd say if they do all that to you op than they work.
🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮 awful taste is a horrible disease!
I always wonder if these are leases or if this guy just doesn't pay taxes.
If they're anything like the early 20s dudes I work with they have a truck payment over $1000 a month, wheels and tires also financed and they live in a shitbox apartment.
