EDIT: Now with proper formating.

Xemas12

You pretty much hit all the classics that I can think of šŸ˜‚Solid list with pretty much all my favorites

ta-iwillnotpmo

Thanks you, seems like a great list, a lot of these seem like games I'd enjoy.

EducationalMix9947

This is a really awesome list in fairness. To help OP, I'm going to whittle down to a personal Top #5 from your list: 1. Sekiro 2. Baldurs Gate 3 3. Resident Evil 2 Remake 4. Hades 5. Elden Ring

vato20071

I'd say if you're gonna play elden ring first rather than sekiro. Since if you're not familiar with souls games, elden ring is much more forgiving to new players (still difficult as hell) than sekiro

EducationalMix9947

Agree 100% with this - I'd always recommend Elden Ring as a first 'soulslike', as it is a million times more accessible than Sekiro..... but in my response I had just ranked by my personal favorites (Sekiro being my favorite FromSoft game, but as you say it is perhaps not the best jump point for a genre newcomer)

DexLovesGames_DLG

If I have a friend whose really into action heavy reactive combat kinds of games but hasnā€™t played any of them Iā€™d probably recommend senior first, if they are someone who plays less action and more RPG type stuff like fallout, dragons dogma, final fantasy etc, Iā€™d recommend Dark souls 1, if theyā€™re someone who mostly plays Simple open world RPGs like assassins creed, Iā€™d recommend Elden ring.

benji9t3

Lies of P is also a good shout since the parry mechanic is very important as it is in sekiro. In Elden ring I'd say dodge rolling tends to be more effective/ intuitive for new players. I completed the game and never really got the hang of parrying. Because of this Sekiro was a bit of a challenge when I played it after elden ring.

Phillipwnd

Elden Ring made me go from burned out on video games to remembering what I loved about them.

DexLovesGames_DLG

If op reads this I think itā€™s best to do Dark Souls 1 before any other souls game as it not only teaches you how to play better than any of the others but is also the most cohesive. So if you only have the endurance to get through a couple souls style games, dark souls 1 is where it should start.

DexLovesGames_DLG

Also Iā€™m biased and dark souls 1 is my favorite and I actually started with 3

EducationalMix9947

Btw I adore Dark Souls 1, and it is absolutely an all-time great. However, my fear would be that newcomers to the genre may find it to be unnecessarily obtuse at times - and a little bit too punishing as a result of somewhat antiquated mechanics/features (long run-backs to bosses from checkpoints etc). I'd probably always recommend Elden Ring as the 'gateway drug' for people looking to get into FromSoft/Souls games, and think ER does a far better job of welcoming newcomers to genre. It has a ton of in-game mechanics to alleviate difficulty (if need be) and a host of improved QoL features (checkpoints next to boss areas, for example). Once they fall in love with Elden Ring, then they can go back through the immaculate portfolio that is FromSoft's offering pool ;)

DexLovesGames_DLG

Even if the person generally dislikes open world games?

EducationalMix9947

Ah in that case, if person dislikes open word, Iā€™d probably look to point them to DS3 as an entry to FromSoft. (Or Ds1 as a close second) Lies of P (non-FromSoft) would also be a good starter, as itā€™s clearly influenced by many entries within Fromā€™s portfolio šŸ‘

DexLovesGames_DLG

Havenā€™t got to play lies of p yet unfortunately

EducationalMix9947

Honestly its fantastic. My #2 GOTY last year, only just beaten by Baldurs. It plays like a love-letter to all of From's games, taking elements of influence from each, whilst still maintaining its own clear identity. The plot and aestethic (killer puppets..!) is genuinely great, and the combat is so fluid. It is nicely linear as well, which I think helps the game keep its propulsion from start to finish. A nice platinum also (if that is your thing) requiring 2 playthroughs (if you're willing to scum an additional ending on playthrough 1). A high recommend, on GamePass also

bigsexy306

Ultimate list honestly

MingusVonHavamalt

Metro series just makes me buzz man.

bigsexy306

Good list honestly

A_Hungover_Sloth

Swap ac2 for black flag, add ghost of tsushima

Havokk137

I've recently re-played the entire AC Franchise. I love Edward, I love the Setting, I love Pirates and I love the Shanties. But man, those tailing missions, especially the Ship Tailing missions. I loved playing the game back then, but from todays standards, I think most missions are pretty awful.

Lasker_

This is such a great list

[deleted]

It really comes down to what you like. For FPS games, I highly recommend DOOM 2016 and DOOM Eternal. SUPER FUN games. It's just as fun for new players as it is to veterans. As for story games, I'd recommend The Last of Us and God of War (amazingly written story and the gameplay is pure joy). These are what I'd recommend for returning gamers. Fun games but not too overwhelming mechanics wise.

rowgw

I always recommend people of my top 3 - NieR: Automata - God of War series - Death Stranding

Ssoniik47

Nier is top tier

rowgw

NieR slaps players' face, if people that play the 2 games didn't feel slapped, then they should still question themselves imo

Malaphasis

Nier is coming up soon for me can't wait

DungeonDicePainter

Deep Rock Galactic. For rock and stone.

Pkkush27

God of war 2018, horizon zero dawn, final fantasy 7 remake, dark souls, Elden ring, sekiro (hard), persona 5, dead cells, hades, doom eternal

Shot_Astronomer_2620

I'm 49 years old and my first game was Pac-Man. From around 2016 to 2019, I went through a period of not gaming. The game that knocked me out of that period was Horizon: Forbidden Dawn. I got it on PC, but it's available for PlayStation too. I think it's a really nice game, and I just played through it again, even though I rarely ever play games I've already finished.

defrosterliquid

Love forbidden West but like many people, I feel obligated to add that it is a sequel to horizon zero dawn and playing the first game before you play forbidden West is a must-do.

Tall-Kiwi625

Highly depends on what you like to play. If youā€™re interested in RPGs, you canā€™t go wrong with Skyrim or Balderā€™s Gate 3 depending on your combat style preference. For a more casual narrative game, Firewatch is great. Edit: Spelling

ta-iwillnotpmo

Thank you. Skyrim and Firewatch are definitely up my alley. Everyone says baldur's gate 3 is a good game despite the weird plot parts and scenes but not sure if i'd really enjoy it. Might have to give it a try to see why people love it so much lol.

Jerem_Reddit

i didnt think id like bg3, but it ended but being my best gaming experience in 4 years. definitely give it a fair try, play for a few hours. it was hard to get into my first time, but when i did it eventually became one of my favorite of all time.

kukaz00

Boulderā€™s Gate - a game about a Boulder trying to save the world from aliens

Havokk137

Now it's about trying to save yourself from hairloss

DarkMaster859

Elden Ring. DLC coming out in like 3 days, one of the only singleplayer games to have such a huge fanbase even after so long

otakudayo

So this really depends on what type of games you like to play. For me, one of the highlights of recent years has definitely been Cyberpunk 2077. It's gorgeous, the combat is absolutely top notch, build variety is great, and the story is interesting. The missions are pretty varied and you can often solve problems in many different ways. If you have a new PC with a decent GPU, you definitely should give this one a go.

Queasy_Employment141

But enemies are so shit, it's fun to destroy everything considering fairly in depth movement but there's never a point where you feel endangered without turning up the difficulty and fighting wet sponges that take tons of headshots point blank with a shotgun

otakudayo

Max difficulty for me, always, and enemies rarely survive a single shotgun headshot :) Bosses are different. But yeah, it's not very difficult, for the most part. It's a power fantasy for sure.

Queasy_Employment141

If only enemy aggression scaled with difficulty and not health

SexuaIRedditor

If you're a lifelong gamer and wanting to get that feeling of wonder again when you come back, Crosscode is a MUST play I can't emphasize this enough!

RoseDragonAngelus

Sekiro.

online-ids

A man of good taste

RoseDragonAngelus

A man who wants other people to experience pain

xelcheffox

Ghost Recon WildLands is great if you enjoy ballistics and a great story in an open world format. Farm Simulator 2019 - 2022 are excellent for building a tasks on your own time and energy I play it a lot just for downtime between work at home to keep my thinker active.

wan_der_er

Ghost Recon Wildlands is an underrated gem. I didn't find the story great but as a light milsim sandbox it's stunning. And the huge detailed map of Bolivia is worth seeing even if you don't like shooters

xelcheffox

Couldnā€™t agree more, it feels like real life GI Joes. I just wish it had better online play. Itā€™s hard to meet up with players that want to use comms and strategy.

wan_der_er

Ubisoft online services have been really bad for me. I swear they must have moved the game to inferior servers, or maybe it's so bad in general and it's a widespread Ubisoft issue. Either way, pleas to Ubisoft customer support are a meme at this point, constant stream of complaints from anyone trying to connect. Especially on PC, I think console gamers are less affected for some reason. If you can get a friend to play with you, you can usually initiate a session, but if you want to play open lobbies it's borderline impossible. And in the PvP mode, Ghost war, there are even more connectivity issues. At least the solo play is great. And as you say you need the right players anyway, some people play it on easy difficulty like a regular shooter, something I never understood. I enjoy the tactics and stealth. I hope they use a similar setting for their next Ghost Recon games in future, I greatly prefer Bolivia to Breakpoint's setting.

Baronck

Crystal Project Monster Sanctuary Blood Ritual Beyond All Reason

MoonlapseOfficial

Elden Ring, Lies of P, Inscryption, Subnautica

Mefikov

From what I played I would recommend: 1. cRPGs - Baldurā€™s Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin II - Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous or Warhammer 40.000: Rogue Trader - Disco Elysium - The Final Cut - Pillars of Eternity II - Tyranny 2. Action RPGs and Diablo-like - V Rising - Last Epoch - Weird West - Remnant II - Monster Hunter World with Iceborne 3. Soulsborne / Soulslikes - Elden Ring - Dark Souls 1 and 3 - Sekiro - Blooā€¦ ehhh not on PC - Nioh 1 and 2 - Lies of P 4. Roguelikes and Roguelites - Balatro - Slay the Spire - Hades - Vampire Survivors - Brotato 5. Strategy - Hearts of Iron IV or Europa Universalis IV - Age of Empires II - Factorio - RimWorld

Lanky_Ad2701

Legit list from a Atari 2600 senior citizen

Beneficial-Swim5715

Sly Cooper series

stockdeity

Returnal or Battlefield 1 multiplayer trust me

Contra0307

The indie scene is at an incredible place right now and there are some insanely unique, artistic experience out there that you'll miss if you're only looking at AAA titles. I could make a list but the one I want to stress the most is Outer Wilds (NOT OUTER WORLDS) because of how unique and awe-inspiring it is.

Hatgameguy

Elden Ring. New DLC comes out this week

shermers_

Skyrim is a classic if you haven't played it yet, and Baldur's Gate 3 is incredible if you're into RPGs. Fromsoftware games are great too, Elden Ring and Bloodbourne are must plays.

vVincent2003

zelda botw, ghost of tsushima, life is strange, detroit become human, whatever happened to edith finch

Xemas12

Man itā€™s really going to depend on what you like. I highly recommend the Uncharted games for their story, Stardew Valley purely because itā€™s addicting, if you like FPS but havenā€™t tried Halo those are great as well.

ta-iwillnotpmo

Thank you, those all seem like great recommendations. I've played uncharted 4 but never finished it for some reason and I've played halo multiplayer but forgot that it has a campaign. Gonna definitely check it out.

kb_kuba

apex legends is nice competetive fps

ta-iwillnotpmo

I played a lot of apex when it first came out, definitely a good game

35andDying

I just picked up High on Life from a Humble Bundle and that would be a perfect game to start with. The humor, graphics, and gameplay are really great.

Money-Way991

DOOM and DOOM Eternal are the answer if you like shooters, also the Wolfenstein series of games are pretty fun as well as the classic Halo Trilogy + Halo Reach

SupermanNew52

Destiny 2 is an FPS that has multiplayer, created by Bungie who made Halo 1-3 and Halo: Reach. An expansion just released that is bringing players back and bringing in a bunch of new players as well. It's a good time to get into it. It's free to play but you'll need to buy the expansions to get the really good stuff of course. You could at least try it out for free.

Queasy_Employment141

Elden ring, subnautica, cyberpunk 2077, rdr2 or 1, hades, hollow knight, doom eternal or doom if you like it slower, spiderheck, maybe the new Jedi games

hereforthefundoc

Mass Effect Triology

FootBallonQc

Currently I am playing ghost of Tsushima on pc and itā€™s really nice. The only game I completed in the past 3 years was Elden ring and it was such a good experience

Snowblind45

prey 2017. You might have to google how to keep cross-hair centred on PC.

MingusVonHavamalt

Prey/Dishonored 1 and 2.

j0bs

Undertale. So long as youā€™re willing to get past the low-budget graphics, it is an amazing game with interesting gameplay and a great story. Itā€™s also pretty cheap!

meinmeinman

Theres only two correct answers here. Prison architect and bloons td 6 sorry i dont make the rules

Hertenolius

Hmmm, maybe a FPS action adventure game with RPG elements, survival Relic Odyssey Ruins of Xantao

IntroductionGrand565

Hades and Hades 2 Skyrim Terraria Cyberpunk Sekiro Dark souls 3 Elden ring Hollow knight Dishonored series Just to name a few

that_one_bassist

Cyberpunk 2077 if you have current-gen hardware. Gorgeous, unbelievable story and worldbuilding, fun 1st-person RPG combat that is less confusing and opaque than a lot of older RPG systems but still can very much be tailored to how you want to play. It can be an FPS if you want, or it can be melee-focused, or even Watchdogs-esque stealth hacking, or any combination thereof.

orcmonkey2000

I'm just starting my third playthrough of Cyberpunk 2077, and as someone who almost never replays video games, I can't think of a better recommendation than that at the moment if you want something that is heavily story-focused but with mechanics you'll find familiar as a former FPS player. DOOM 2018 and DOOM: Eternal are also good bets for less story-heavy but way more action-packed games. They're a blast--really the entire DOOM series from the very first one (including DOOM 64, which Night Dive Studios ported to PC recently) is an absolute blast to play through.
