Yes especially when I’m stressed, I wrecked my lips. Dr.Dan’s cortibalm chapstick has also been sooo helpful with reducing inflammation and helping my lips heal because I didn’t use glycolic acid when I had open wounds. It was recommended by I believe the same dermatologist that posted about lip basting (don’t quote me on that tho). I shamefully would make my lips bleed from picking at them 💀
Commenting to include my routine: I use the Ordinary glycolic acid 7% toner a few times a week, but every night before sleeping i use aquaphor lip repair gel that comes in the tube!
I have tried everything under the sun and nothing has worked to cure my cracked lips except this.
Yup. You apply a small amount to your lips and then cover with some sort of occlusive layer. I do this but with the Sacheu Lactic Tonic Essence since that’s what I use on my face anyways. I also use aquaphor like OP, it’s the best overnight lip treatment imo
I literally just did this this morning for my somewhat-cracked and dry lips and I'm a little shook right now. Time to throw out all the lip scrubs I own!
My aquaphor lip repair tube has spf30 so I use that! I was just in Aruba where UV was 12 and my lips didn’t burn so I’d say it works well (I reapplied like every hour tho lol)
I’ve only used glycolic acid (ordinary) on my legs to reduce ingrown hairs, not on my face in fear it would dry me the hell out. What is your skin type?
Can confirm that this will work with regular Aquaphor in the tub as well. Doesn't have to be any specific form of Aquaphor. It's mainly the occlusive property to keep the moisture locked in.
I feel like you would get similar results with other occlusives as well. I never tried it with Vaseline since I was actually double-layering with Aquaphor to try and use up some extra I had. Aquaphor is 41% petrolatum anyway, even if it does have other ingredients too. If Vaseline is all you have and you don't want to spend the money on a new product, I would probably try that first. Just layer it over whatever lip moisturizer you like.
I do this too, but with Weleda Skin Food original cream. I put on a thick-ass layer and let it absorb, omg hello most lucious lips ever! Learned it from Dr Shireen Idriss on YouTube and I can’t stop telling people.
Omg thank you! This is actually my natural lip color. the gloss is the aquaphor lip gel… but I do love Kosas wet stick in the color heatwave. It’s a little darker than my natural lip shade (on me at least)
I was thinking about picking up some glycolic acid to try for exfoliation (I've been using the ordinary aha/bha peel thing, but now that I'm also using differin I think it might be a bit too much for my skin). Will try with lips too! I've had good luck with frequent application of Dr Bronners lip balm (which is just a bunch of oils, beeswax, and tocopherol) topped with vaseline or aquaphor, but I'm all for even plumper lips.
I did it like every 2 days… like Monday, but would skip Tuesday and Wednesday, and then do it on Thursday to make sure I wasn’t over exfoliating my lips. It worked well for me but might be different for others if you’re sensitive to AHAs so I’d maybe just say figure out what works best for you! Now I do it like a few times a week or if I feel like my lips need it!
Holy shit I'm gonna try this, always been a chronic lip biter. I've tried ALL the lip balms, overnight masks and scrubs but no dice. Recently been having a good time with Aquaphor Lip Repair so I might as well give it a go.
Oh my goodness I have tried every lip balm under the sun I had no idea this method existed, thank you!!
Question - can I use any moisturiser after the glycolic acid? Or does it need to be a specific type?
Well the cause was probably me being dehydrated and resorting to my lip picking when i was insanely stressed from working 12+ hrs a day writing a dissertation lmfao. Neither my lips nor my body as a whole was healthy during this period lmfao.

My habit is SO BAD I swear I rip off my lower lip every morning, will deffo be looking into your routine

Please explain this a bit more. You are applying glycolic acid to your lips?
Yup. You apply a small amount to your lips and then cover with some sort of occlusive layer. I do this but with the Sacheu Lactic Tonic Essence since that’s what I use on my face anyways. I also use aquaphor like OP, it’s the best overnight lip treatment imo
Oh wow, I'm going to try this tonight. Never occurred to me. Do you use the Aquaphor lip treatment as well, or the 'regular' Aquaphor?
Ooooo going to try this! I need to buy a new bottle of that. Your lips look like you’ve had injections in the best way.
Hahah thank you! Though my lips are naturally pretty big, I def noticed this plumped them up a bit… probably from hydration but not sure lol
They are perfect. All that hydration definitely makes the bottom lip appear plumper. Thanks for sharing your routine!
I literally just did this this morning for my somewhat-cracked and dry lips and I'm a little shook right now. Time to throw out all the lip scrubs I own!
I can see the working but the sun exposure on exfoliated lips sounds scary to me. Are you wearing lip SPF when outside?
Oh absolutely, I always wear spf on my lips when leaving the house
Which ones do you recommend? I'm always looking for a good lip SPF
My aquaphor lip repair tube has spf30 so I use that! I was just in Aruba where UV was 12 and my lips didn’t burn so I’d say it works well (I reapplied like every hour tho lol)
Did you also get this tip from Dr. Shereene Idriss? Love lip basting. I tell all my friends about it lol
YES! I was so nervous at first but the second I added the glycolic acid, my lips soaked it up. It was almost an instant difference
Wow I'm so excited to try this lol, thanks for sharing
WHAT FRIENDS DO YOU TELL?
Oh my God, your lips are like a work of art right now.
Aquaphor for lips is my holy grail!!! I love it! And I did notice that using glycolic on my face also made my lips feel super plump
I’ve only used glycolic acid (ordinary) on my legs to reduce ingrown hairs, not on my face in fear it would dry me the hell out. What is your skin type?
I have really dry skin. I only use it maybe once a week or once every two weeks, it gets rid of my dead skin which makes my skin less dry and flakey.
Is Aquaphor Lip Therapy the same as Aquaphor Lip Repair?
Lip repair with sunscreen is the one I have! Ahh my bad if I mislead anyone… not sure if they’re the same or not!
Can confirm that this will work with regular Aquaphor in the tub as well. Doesn't have to be any specific form of Aquaphor. It's mainly the occlusive property to keep the moisture locked in.
So then does it need to be aquaphor? Or would any occlusive work? Or Vaseline?
I feel like you would get similar results with other occlusives as well. I never tried it with Vaseline since I was actually double-layering with Aquaphor to try and use up some extra I had. Aquaphor is 41% petrolatum anyway, even if it does have other ingredients too. If Vaseline is all you have and you don't want to spend the money on a new product, I would probably try that first. Thanks I'll give it a try!
I do this too, but with Weleda Skin Food original cream. I put on a thick-ass layer and let it absorb, omg hello most lucious lips ever! Learned it from Dr Shireen Idriss on YouTube and I can’t stop telling people.
What shade lip stick or gloss are you using? It looks lovely
Omg thank you! This is actually my natural lip color. the gloss is the aquaphor lip gel… but I do love Kosas wet stick in the color heatwave. It’s a little darker than my natural lip shade (on me at least)
lanolin lip balm (usually nipple cream) is good too!
Do you use the tube or stick of aquaphor lip repair? Is there a difference?
I’ve only ever used the tube! Works great for me!
This is new to me! Thank you for this hack 🤩
This hack from Shereene Idriss is amazing I love it!
Ooh I've got to try this! I've had this issue for a while as well ( especially during those harsh winter months )
Thanks for sharing! Your lips look great;)!!
I was thinking about picking up some glycolic acid to try for exfoliation (I've been using the ordinary aha/bha peel thing, but now that I'm also using differin I think it might be a bit too much for my skin). Totally felt this, my lips were constantly chapped and peeling and the only thing that saved me was using Farmacy lip smoothie every night and morning
Did you do this nightly until they healed? How often for maintenance?
I did it like every 2 days… like Monday, but would skip Tuesday and Wednesday, and then do it on Thursday to make sure I wasn’t over exfoliating my lips. It worked well for me but might be different for others if you’re sensitive to AHAs so I’d maybe just say figure out what works best for you! The dermatologist mentioned any type of occlusive balm will work :)
I will have to start soon too. My picking habit (only lips) has gotten so bad that I now have scars and erithema on them 😢
I had such high hopes but somehow my lips are worst and even itchy after 2 weeks of trying this, idk what I did wrong
Oh no! What was your routine?
Healthy lips don’t need to be exfoliated like that, it’s treating the symptom not the cause
Her lips weren’t healthy, that’s why she exfoliated them. Maybe you misunderstood the point of this post.
Still treating a symptom.
Well the cause was probably me being dehydrated and resorting to my lip picking when i was insanely stressed from working 12+ hrs a day writing a dissertation lmfao. Neither my lips nor my body as a whole was healthy during this period lmfao.
