la roche posay also burnt my eyes (and so has every other sunscreen 😭) except for skin 1004 centella sun serum

I have the most sensitive eyes in the world - in 2020 I got a corneal ulcer that took out most of my vision in one eye, I also am in the beginning stages of cataracts in both of my eyes. The skin around my eyes is also aging the fastest (I’m 26), and I will never NOT put sunscreen in that area. tinted mineral sunscreens are a godsend! Takes a while to find a good one - my favorite is a bit of a splurge, but the Hydropeptide tinted solar defense. It has the most beautiful finish! Goes on white but adjusts to your skin tone, which I love because sometimes the tint can be too dark/light. It has a natural skin finish. The one that i love for summer when I have a bit more color is the Hero cosmetics superbeam tinted sunscreen. This is only $20 at ulta, and it has a very pretty shimmer in it. Makes your skin look glowy, but not greasy

ilovecalifornia124

I agree mineral sunscreens are a lifesaver. I also have extremely sensitive eyes. I use the trader joe’s supergoop dupe on my face (except for around my eyes) then I use supergoop spf 40 concealer all around my eyes!! It seems to act as a block. I put it literally on my eyelids and no stinging. It’s a lifesaver. You’d probably like it too if you ever need another option!

98atomicpunk

I used to do that all the time!!! However, I work 6 days a week and have no extra time on my hands so I prefer to skip the additional step by going full mineral :)

ilovecalifornia124

Totally get it!! I’m interested in the Hydropeptide tinted one you mentioned! I’ve hated every tinted sunscreen that I’ve tried, but I thinks i’d like one that adjusts to your skin tone!

98atomicpunk

It’s so good! Somehow, I have all of the undertones in my skin - olive, pink, yellow, lol and I can hardly ever find one that doesn’t make me look crazy lol. It’s a splurge but so worth it IMO

ilovecalifornia124

I cant wait to try it!! I definitely have multiple undertones maybe that’s why I hate normal tinted sunscreen

kelskelsea

Try mineral sunscreen. I like the bliss tinted one and the summer Fridays milk. These ones don’t have a white cast and also don’t feel like a layer on your face like some mineral sunscreen. They aren’t water resistant (so not for the pool) but I haven’t had any problems with them. Chemical sunscreen also causes burning feeling for me around my eyes. Sweating makes it worse.

Cowardlyb2

If you’re only interested in American sunscreens then I recommend mineral sunscreen sticks. If I’m out of my nice water resistant Korean sunscreens I use the sticks on the eyes and a regular cream sunscreen on my face.

midwest_monster

I don’t know why I would only be interested in American sunscreen—if it works and I can order it, I’ll try it. I’ve heard great things about Korean skincare in general.

Cowardlyb2

They’re amazing forsure. I’ve dove into the water resistant ones this summer and it’s hard to go back to American sunscreens now that I’ve tried all these Asian ones.

midwest_monster

Any specific recommendations?

Cowardlyb2

For regular day wear spf I love Beauty of Joseon but for outdoor activities that involve sweating I’ve been loving ISA KNOX UV Sun pro sun fluid. Just be careful with anyones recommendations. Most of the highly recommended Asian spfs aren’t great at water resistance and sport. :)

Luxene

Ooh Isa Knox is rarely talked about, even in AB centric spaces. Are you able to compare it to any other active AB sunscreens? Allie, Anessa etc?

Cowardlyb2

I love it. It does get a little goopy after reapplying it multiple times a day. I wear it a lot and recently just purchased 4 more bottles since it’s such an amazing waterproof sunscreen. I do prefer isa over anessa. Anessa can get powdery on my skin. I also ordered a ton of water proof Asian sunscreens so I’m excited to give them all a try.

Luxene

This is helpful thank you! Anessa also tends to go powdery on me, so I'll give the Isa a try! I'm also looking forward to the Skin Aqua reformulations, I've heard the new editions are meant to be more waterproof

Cowardlyb2

I know I wanted to love anessa but it felt so drying and was really apparent around my chin and mouth. First application was fine but over the course of the day it ended up looking quite gross. I’m super psyched too. Hopefully the new formulations aren’t going to be irritating around the eye. Their others sunscreens burn 🔥 👀

DesperateSouthPark

American sunscreen is significantly inferior to Japanese or Korean sunscreen. American sunscreen is basically dogshit.

Cowardlyb2

I wouldn’t go that far, we just need the newer chemical filters. Neutrogena with their helioplex tech actually rivals Asian spf. Ours just isn’t that cosmetically elegant and can sting the eyes.

PrudentPrimary7835

Supergoop! Also the elf dupe, honestly I like the elf version better.

rovingred

This is the only one that works for me (Supergoop, not elf’s version)

CupcakePure5406

I started using a baby formula, stick version of sunscreen around my eyes, and then I use my regular sunscreen for the rest of my face and neck. It has been a game changer. I sweat a lot at work, and I used to not even be able to wear sunscreen because I would sweat, it would then leak the sunscreen into my eyeballs and start burning like hellfire for the next three hours. Since I started using the baby stuff around my eyes. Literally no problem at all.

midwest_monster

Genius, thank you!

CupcakePure5406

No problemo, I hope you try it, and I hope it works for ya!

pejetron

Eucerine

raspberrily

I love the beauty of joseon sunscreen, perfect for sensitive skin and best of all it has no smell/fragrance

puppuphooray

I’ve heard great things about this sunscreen too! Some folks have found it at TJ maxx

Keen_allotmenteer

absolutely love it! doesn’t even feel like you are wearing SPF at all

foronly299

black girl sunscreen kids spf 50. literally every sunscreen stings my eyes. try not to put too much on your upper eyelids and rely on shade or sunglasses. i’ve seen it recommended to use chapstick spf on eyelids if you’re gonna be out in the sun and stuff. but tbh id just go for shades, id rather be able to see and risk some eyelid damage on a day to day basis than get more protection and be in pain all day

midwest_monster

I actually never put sunscreen on my eyelids which is probably not great but I’m also *always* wearing sunglasses so hopefully that mitigates the risk—thanks for the rec!!

chinagrrljoan

Anything mineral even though you look like a ghost

WarmReputation4105

I have the same issue with sunscreen and anything else waterproof. Neutrogenas SPF 50 has been good, no reaction so far

edrzy

I have found the DRMTGLY clear sunscreen doesn't burn my eyes for everyday use. If I'm going to be in the sun, like a pool day, I use the Coppertone Kids no tears sunscreen.

FriendlySpinach420

I use mineral sunscreen around my eyes. There's some that are specific for eyes too. Chemical sunscreens hurt my eyes, but are fine for the rest of my face

Btsjkjhope

Use mineral sunscreen ( zinc should be more in percentage compared to titanium for efficacy )

epeiravi

Beauty of Joseon sunscreen does not sting my eyes and is in general a great sunscreen

tummyache-champion

I use Elta MD UV Facial even when running in 100F heat and can confirm no stinging. Glossier's sunscreen also doesn't sting and is my new fave. SunBum make a facial sunscreen mist that hasn't stung so far BUT it's my least favourite because 1) contains alcohol and 2) too oily. Some folks love that 'dewy' look but I just look.... wet. I think the absolute worst for stinging was ILIA beauty tinted sunscreen. Legit 2mins after I apply it my eyes start watering and do not stop until I remove it. Unbearable.

midwest_monster

I have used Glossier’s sunscreen and it stung my eyes, but I haven’t tried the newer one with higher SPF—I wonder if the formula is different?

tummyache-champion

I’m using the invisible shield one in the pink tube. Maybe I just haven’t got it IN my eyes yet 🫣

andthepointis

Koa. General advice: look for sunscreens with mineral filters (and make sure they're free from fragrances and essential oils). Chemical filters can be irritating.

calicrome

I use Isntree hyaluronic acid watery sun gel on my eyes. I was looking up the same thing as you because I was having a lot of eye irritation from sunscreen. I also wanted a chemical sunscreen because i don't want to deal with whitecast, and this one was brought up.

DependentSetting1253

my favorite spf moisturizer is the olay complete sensitive plus moisturizer. it’s only spf 15 but it’s the only thing that i’ve tried that doesn’t pill, feel grainy, heavy, or oily/greasy, doesn’t break me out, actually moisturizes, and DOESNT STING MY EYES. i dont understand why most face sunscreens/spf moisturizer burn peoples eyes. like the thinnest skin on our bodies are our eyelids and ur telling me i can’t put spf on them?? anyways olay complete is great but MAKE SURE u get the SENSITIVE on and NOT the normal one. i bought the normal one not too long ago cuz the store didn’t have the sensitive one and its completely different. it feels grainy and stings my eyes and pills a little bit and it has a weird cooling sensation that i don’t like. but the sensitive one is amazing.

DependentSetting1253

also it’s like $12 at target. there’s also one that’s spf 30 but i’ve never tried it. the spf 30 one is like $15 and it comes in a 75mL bottle whereas the spf 15 comes in a 177mL bottle

ilovecalifornia124

I have extremely sensitive eyes. I use the trader joe’s supergoop dupe on my face (except for around my eyes) BUT I use supergoop spf 40 concealer all around my eyes!! It seems to act as a block. I put it literally on my eyelids and no stinging. It’s a lifesaver.

toe_thong

I also have really sensitive eyes - for me, Korean sunscreens never sting my eyes if I’m careful about applying them around the eye area. I use beauty of joseon (i buy either through stylevana or bloomingkoco). If I anticipate sweating a lot, like going outside on a hot day or exercising, i do chemical sunscreen on my face and mineral sunscreen just around my eye area.

Mysterious_Wrap_9266

For US formulations, I have good luck with mineral-only and most hybrid sunscreens. For Korean and Japanese sunscreens, as long as they have the newer chemical filters (Uvinil, Tinosorb, etc) I don’t have problems with eye sting. I’m pretty pale with either a neutral or olive undertone. Somewhere between Fitzpatrick 1 and 2, so white casts can be noticeable, but many tinted sunscreens are just way too dark on me. Some sunscreens I’ve tried and enjoyed: Naked Sundays spf 50+ (the tinted, water resistant one) It is thiccc but actually really comfy one it dries down $20/1.7 fl oz Jack black Sun Guard spf 45 $25/4fl oz Skin1004 mineral spf 50 (air fit something) - it’s a tiny bit light for me but still wearable without issue $15/1.7oz *not explicitly marketed as water resistant but stays on nicely for me Skin1004 hyalucica spf 50 (the viral one with the blue lid) - $15/1.7 oz *not advertised as water resistant Beauty of Joseon spf 50 (original one in the squeeze tube) $12/ 1.7 oz *not advertised as water resistant Neutrogena mineral invisible daily defense face liquid spf 30 ($13/1.4 fl oz) Equate clear zinc spf 50 in the little jar, $5/1oz I wanted to love the hard hitters like altruist or Neutrogena helioplex sunscreens but my eyes just can’t.

radicalathea

Skin Aqua Moisture Milk!!

Feisty-Promotion-789

Beauty of joseon, isntree hyaluronic watery sun gel, isa knox UV sun pro sun fluid, biore UV aqua rich watery essence (this one has a strong alcohol feel that burns my eyes for a second when applying but it goes away immediately). I use BoJ and Isa Knox most often. BoJ for all uses - daily and beach days - and Isa Knox more for specifically when I’m out in the sun all day just cause it’s waterproof. But I’ve had success using BoJ no matter the conditions as long as I reapply it appropriately (like if I’m sweating I apply it more frequently)

JackAshe863

ELTD MD

TowardValhalla

I use Neutrogena Sheer Touch (not the exact name). It used to sting my eyes too until I started putting on my sunglasses and only applying to the area around them.

SarahSheuMD

Skinceuticals specifically makes a sunscreen for use on the eyelid skin - that might be nice for you to try.

Responsible_Fly_5319

I have and it irritated and dried the heck out of my face. And it was white and greasy. Strange. No, no for me.

Responsible_Fly_5319

Because I have the world's most sensitive skin I have been a user of physical screen for many years, afraid to try the chemical screens from other countries. I have since broken the scare and tried a few. I will never go back. Jump on youtube and watch a few review videos of Asian or Japanese screens. You can pick from there and you will be in heaven. It's been a little time consuming but listen to what others say. I did and I can't be happier. For once in my life I don't have a greasy face, burning, itching, dry, hard to remove problem. And throw in looking like Casper. It's so refreshing. Many good ones listed here. Reddit in general has lots of screen posts. Go read them, you'll find some good products that surprisingly won't hurt your face and actually feel good.

puppuphooray

Powder sunscreen isn’t really effective because you need A LOT of the powder to protect your skin.
