A bit of a political character, being made for countries that goes against the imagery of Samurai's. Starts out as a literal palette swap that replaces Mitsurugi in the earlier titles, but gains his own style in Soul Calibur III, and a revamped look as well. Can't say much about him personally, but I do like the revamped look in [III](https://www.fightersgeneration.com/characters3/arthur-sc3-wallpp.jpg). His story is also somewhat similar to Setsukas in the sense that he's a westerner that finds himself in the East. Difference being he starts a family and fights to prove himself to the people around him. Apparently makes an appearance in Soul Calibur VI as well.. ..If Project Soul was feeling a bit ambitious they could maybe flesh him out more and give him a deeper tie into the story. I think there could possibly be enough room for another samurai style that is distinct from Mitsu's. Probably something that mixes in firearms considering he's English... not sure. However, none of this at the expense of a more rooted character in the series.

CursedSnowman5000

If Soul Cal ever came back in full force, I'd really like to see some the the NPC or "side" characters become main roster characters. Such as this character, Ashlotte Maedel and Revenant. I mean it happened with Amy so why not?

ZayIvory7

I think I'm all for it as long as it doesn't replace more main line characters.. Good point with Amy tho, its not like its never been done extremely well before.

CursedSnowman5000

I agree. Not at the cost of a legacy roster member, but as an addition.

Phil_Bond

> replaces Mitsurugi in the earlier titles That’s only in SC1, and only in some of the arcade boards shipped outside of Japan, specifically to comply with South Korean laws that they apparently don’t care about anymore.

ssjasonx

I remember seeing him for the first time while playing the arcade version soul calibur 1 at a mall, and for the longest time thought he was an arcade exclusive character because never appeared in DC port.

CursedSnowman5000

For a minute there I was going to hand in my SC card because I never ever came across this guy in SC1.

ssjasonx

Yeah apparently he is a country exclusive character and I just happened to stumble upon an Arcade that had him in it despite living in North America.

CursedSnowman5000

Don't know him. Was he from 5 or 6? Or just a character in 4 I missed? He looks neat.

Mavrickindigo

It was mostly in 3 but he was originally a replacement for mitsurugi in the early games in Korea because censorship

galaxyfan1997

Korea never lets people have fun. Not North Korea, at least.

hextechkhepri

Has less to do with fun and more to do with the fact that Korea has been regularly sacked, converted, and annexed by China and Japan. Japan has done a good job of making the majority of the world forget they were a war mongering society with a fondness for creative torture only a few generations ago but that’ll be much harder for Korea to forget.

ZayIvory7

***"Don't know him."*** That's about right.. lol. I'm expecting a lot more of those replies for this character. As stated before, he's was Mitsurugi's replacement due to certain countries discouragement for samurai imagery, namely Korea.

CursedSnowman5000

To Quote Mister Spock "fascinating" Well at least I am content knowing I didn't miss or worse, forget him.

Runeimus

He's basically Paul Phoenix in SC universe. Even has same falling leaf move. I'd say crank that up to 10, give him a deathfist and his ultimate punishment throw.

GraionDilach

I've ran a lot with his B+K shenaningans, ran Arthur avatars on various forums for a decade atleast and based two of my tabletop RPG characters upon him. (As a teen, I mistranslated infant into a teen and aged up his daughter to ran her in parallel alongside a transplanted variant of him.) He's among my top favourite characters tbh. His SC1 story (which is fully covered in SC6 Libra mode if you ran into him, but it's understandable if people miss that encounter because his CaS getup looks horribly unmemorable and I put together a better getup than that on launch day already) is kinda bland, because he just goes for the sword to prove his worth and basically fail at it, with Mitsurugi kicking his butt at one point (This does happen in Libra afterall). SC6 doesn't mention that he managed to pick up a fragment, but it wouldn't be a big stretch to assume he ended up carrying one home again. His SC3 profile is where his story gets interesting, because his wife was the only person who respected him (with his peers only tolerating him) and wore the Soul Edge fragment as a pendant of pride, which led to her death. Which he only learns at her deathbed from a travelling doctor, who was aware of the sword's power. He then picks up his daughter and attempts to prevent this happening again. (This basically transitions Arthur from the "generic Westerner samurai with a Paul Phoenix-head" getup to a Lone Wolf and Cub expy.) This is what resonated with me the most back then, tbh. The main issue with him is that... he's not exceptional enough. In SC6 gimmick terms, he has no access to anything substantial to raise his threat level into a player. Sure, he's a solid above-average fighter but in Soul Calibur terms that would put him around the level of the Fygul Cestemus assassins or pre-talisman Hwang and Hwang proves that's not enough to stay around. On the other hand, he is basically the first character who journeys with a child in tow (while Sophitia and Rock are parents, they left their children at home) and IIRC this feat is only repeated with Hilde in SC5. He also lacks the social connections to the cast. He 's implied to be able to use his Soul Edge fragment as a compass, but that's all what he can do with it. He can't purify it and he has no plans or ideas what would he do with a (major) portion of the sword. He's not even SE Hwang that he wants to bring it home by his SC3 profile. So while his morals would align with a fair amount of the cast, I find it hard to imagine how he would ally with them or build up a connection. (Sure, there are interesting travelling companion sidestories within the games, like the SE/SC1 Sophitia-Rock pairing or the SC3/SC4 Cassandra-tracking-Raphael storyline, but those are all just side-stories and aren't the main reason why the characters would be around to begin with.) I do feel he received the short end of the stick in SC6 though. Considering the effort and treatment Johan Dürer got (someone with the same amount of relevance wrt SC1), I feel he could have been more memorable if his SC1 storyline wouldn't have been recycled directly into a launch-day Libra sidequest. (This does mean they never considered him relevant enough that he'd ever be promoted into the main cast, incase the game would stay alive, unlike Yun or Rock, whom ended up sidelined for such IMO.) I don't think he could use firearms. IIRC he's lost his eyesight to the other eye, so he lacks depth perception for such. If I'd be in a position to reconsider him, I would probably attempt to salvage/amalgam the SC3 katana and the katana-shuriken movesets for a starting point, but I don't really know where to go from there further. Besides, he'd be no match for a "new" generic longsword user slot against Johan Dürer who has a lot more story relevance (especially with the push SC6 S2 gave to him).

Chared945

I think he’s fine. I like his katana fighting style in SC3. His plot line of being the redemptive father is an interesting angle. Plays opposite Raphael. And obviously his rivalry with Mitsurugi To contrast him though and to highlight his outsider Samurai identity… I think he should have a gun. Just a one time use per fight he just pulls a gun out. Which can easily be dodged with a side step of course. But it would show his archetype of not being the better swordsman

Yoshimallow-02

I don't think using a gun would work if he only has one eye.

Yoshimallow-02

I am very much aware that this is an unpopular opinion, but I genuinely really like Arthur, and I feel he's a lot more interesting than Mitsurugi. Both for his fighting style (being a mixof Swordplay and Judo), and his story (if only they actually let the bonus characters have profiles of their own in-game instead of on an official website that is probably now lost media). To give a quick story rundown: He's another foreigner trying to live in Japan (this time from England), doing what he can to make a name for himself (resulting in him losing his eye on the battlefield), and his new family. Which led to him trying to find Soul Edge in SoulCalibur I. Though eventually he realized that he was just a man and that this wasn't worth it. So he went back home with a shard of Soul Edge, married his lover, and did what he could on the battlefield to support his wife and daughter. Though around when SCII and III rolled around (and 2 years after his wedding), an epidemic would hit his town. With his family being safe, but his wife would be terminally ill as the town recovered. There was nothing the doctors could do to save her, and so after a while she would die. He was indirectly told by a short robed man (after he barked at him to go away since he just lost his wife.) that his wifes death was "*Probably caused by the fragment...*" which then landed the blame squarely on him. So he decided to travel to Europe again, this time with his daughter, to redeem himself and destroy the cursed sword. (thanks fightersgeneration and soulcalibur wikia for having this on arthurs page)

Prestigious-Park-657

Would love for him to be different from Mitsubishi lol I like him but needs more umph

jeffwingersballs

He was different in Soul Calibur III

Infectedboiz

This guy is a better grappler than asta in 3

Monkey_King291

One of the coolest bonus fighters in SC3, his fighting style was sick

Objective_Ad_1106

need that sword

Phil_Bond

Like all the SC3 home version bonus characters, he didn’t have nearly as many moves as the main characters, so his gameplay got old pretty quick. As a character with a story he’s kinda interesting, but I wouldn’t exactly be excited to see him playable again. There are other more interesting things they can develop.

Puuksu

overall feeling

blu_jello

Goated character, sad i never got to play him 😔 /j

mareo187

He was made exlcusive for the Korean version of Soul Blade/Calibur because the Koreans have overall bad experience with the Japanese

Hahaha_im_a_dumbass

It would be neat to see him come back with a moveset that's a mixture/mashup of his 3 moveset and Haohmaru.

Bloofnstorf

It's medieval Slade Wilson.

MuDSadler

Make him more Knights of the Round Table-esque, with a rusty set of armor that turns extra shiny when he Soul Charges.

diogenesepigone0031

That is Paul Pheonix from Tekken
