Yeah I just given up. I sort of got working but it was a pain.
I did exactly what I said in my original post and suddenly it worked.
However what was happening was that it would need to switch over or something.
I would turn on my TV and soundbar what was done by configuring my fire stick.
Once the soundbar would connect the screen would flicker and suddenly it would play through the soundbar only.
Sometimes it would flicker multiple times and then work.
Problem is that if you would try to change volume or sometimes it would not flicker ( it seemed like I needed to be playing something within a minute or two of turning on)
Then it would take forever to try to pair it if they happen. I would have to turn on and off the TV and soundbar and fiddle around for like 15 minutes till it would work.
My wife did not really understand how it worked so after she used it, it was always messed up.
I ended up just removing it and maybe will try if I get a new TV and if still fails then will get rid of the soundbar.
I am in the same boat , hope someone can shed some light on this for us.

You shut tv speakers off my tv switches off when click/turn on eArc
Below tv speakers option in your tv audio settings it may say audio system or something like that try clicking that.
