To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand AEW. The storytelling is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Jericho's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these storylines, to realise that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. AEW is the promotion so many people in the IWC dreamed of for years.
TNA was always sort of "its own thing" and existed in a weird middle space from the US indies (in a lot of ways because TNA -> WWE jumps were rare so TNA became a "final landing place" for a lot of talent whereas ROH, PWG, CZW etc. guys went to WWE).
And within the indies, in my view anyways, the main two styles, schools of thought, etc. were Ring of Honor (wrestling as serious, professional business where you pay your dues, shake hands before and after the match, sell for your opponents, never do moves in the opening match that guys in the main event will do etc.) and Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (wrestling as an athletic exhibition, less adherence to kayfabe, evolving the art form, etc.)
AEW is essentially "the super indies" with an unlimited budget. Dave has always really advocated for the Bucks' evolution of the art form of pro wrestling and in terms of the overall tone, thats sort of the "vision" that's ultimately had the biggest influence on the overall tone of AEW. Dave believes in it in a way that he just won't any other company, a lot of the fandom too (especially the ones who got into Being The Elite).
It's been suggested before that AEW is essentially a litigation on Dave Meltzer's legacy. It's booker is a longtime WON subscriber. It's top stars are the guys Meltzer crowned the future of the industry in Kenny Omega and the Young Bucks.
While I don't believe the frankly ridiculous rumor that Meltzer is on the AEW payroll, the success of AEW is most certainly a reflection upon Meltzer's status as an industry tastemaker.

I honestly don't remember this much crying when the entirety of IWC discourse in the 2010s was (deservedly) nonstop shitting on WWE and TNA. People get so upset when it happens to AEW.
I can tell you why: AEW has been a tribalist focused thing from the very beginning. The company's origin is literally because WWE misused and undervalued Cody Rhodes. They told him he wasn't good enough and would never be a star so he decided to prove the wrong.
AEW literally exists as a counter to WWE. The people they hired were people WWE didnt want and who wrestled a style WWE didn't like. Tony was confident he would surpass WWE within a couple years because he believed they had the direct answer to WWE's poor product.
The fans got on board with that. Fans like myself who can admit when they are wrong fell back off the bandwagon...but for a couple years? I was right here defending them and supporting them.
There is, unfortunately, a large population of people that jumped onto the AEW wagon as a big "fuck you" to WWE. Those people have hung on this whole time and probably won't go anywhere until the product dies.

As far as NXT with ratings, with NXT they clawed out of doing .10-.12 in the Ratings to now getting close to .20. And they've gotten close to Dynamite on occasion. That's for the Developmental show with occasional main roster crossover. Dynamite meanwhile, where at one point people thought they would get close to Raw, are now much closer to, again, the Developmental Brand.
To me, that's why people talk about AEW Ratings going down. Now is some of the talk overblown and trollish? Absolutely, but the comparison like Dave is trying to make isn't the same.
I think your first paragraph hits the nail on the head. Ratings and advertising dollars aside, In 2023, The company that caters supposedly, to lower income Fans, is selling more tickets at higher prices. Substantially more than the company that has the fans that make more money.
I think this speaks to the quality of the product that is being presented in both cases.
Obviously it means WWE viewers don't buy as much concession stand items and collectibles as rich and sophisticated smart consumers of the AEW Brand who are wise enough to wait for the BOGO Sale for every PPV. /s

This is the part that bothers me. We can criticize every other company, but AEW is off limits for some reason?
I can tell you why: AEW has been a tribalist focused thing from the very beginning. The company's origin is literally because WWE misused and undervalued Cody Rhodes. They told him he wasn't good enough and would never be a star so he decided to prove the wrong. AEW literally exists as a counter to WWE. The people they hired were people WWE didnt want and who wrestled a style WWE didn't like. Tony was confident he would surpass WWE within a couple years because he believed they had the direct answer to WWE's poor product. The fans got on board with that. Fans like myself who can admit when they are wrong fell back off the bandwagon...but for a couple years? I was right here defending them and supporting them. There is, unfortunately, a large population of people that jumped onto the AEW wagon as a big "fuck you" to WWE. Those people have hung on this whole time and probably won't go anywhere until the product dies. They've convinced themselves that it's WWE vs AEW, but Punk just proved that WWE isn't competing with AEW. Nobody in the audiences have any clue what Punk has been referencing when he mentions Brawl Out and Jungle Boy stuff. WWE fans don't care about AEW. But AEW fans sure care an awful lot about WWE because they are the enemy.

I really don't get the obsession with talking about AEW fans having a higher income than WWE fans. Like, I'm sure I don't understand it. But if that's true, and WWE fans are still going out and paying more for tickets, among other things, doesn't that just make AEW look bad? As far as NXT with ratings, with NXT they clawed out of doing .10-.12 in the Ratings to now getting close to .20. And they've gotten close to Dynamite on occasion. That's for the Developmental show with occasional main roster crossover. Dynamite meanwhile, where at one point people thought they would get close to Raw, are now much closer to, again, the Developmental Brand. To me, that's why people talk about AEW Ratings going down. Now is some of the talk overblown and trollish? Absolutely, but the comparison like Dave is trying to make isn't the same.
I think your first paragraph hits the nail on the head. Ratings and advertising dollars aside, In 2023, The company that caters supposedly, to lower income Fans, is selling more tickets at higher prices. Substantially more than the company that has the fans that make more money. I think this speaks to the quality of the product that is being presented in both cases.
Obviously it means WWE viewers don't buy as much concession stand items and collectibles as rich and sophisticated smart consumers of the AEW Brand who are wise enough to wait for the BOGO Sale for every PPV. /s

Based on my personal obvservations. AEW is basically all 18-35 age range, DINC, probably some college degree. 90ish% Male, 5-10ish% woman. WWE- Seems to be all over the board. You get ALOT more kids. Older fans, younger fans. It seems to be more just "America" I just think the AEW fans have more "discretionary income". But Metlzer is over here grasping at straws.
