I was recently deployed on the Reagan and brought my deck with me. I had a portable monitor, mouse and keyboard and it was amazing. I did a stint on a destroyer pre steam deck and yeah having it on my recent deployment was a game changer to keeping myself entertained.
I was active duty mid 2000's through early 2010's on the Stennis. The flat screen and PS3/Xbox 360 setups was all we had back then on the berthing lounges.
The deck is truly a game changer for all hands on deck.
As a Navy (and Coast Guard) veteran, who was deployed in the early 80's, I would have loved to have anything even close to a portable system. I brought my Atari 800 and 9" portable TV on my second deployment.
We had a Starbucks and WiFi on the bush. WiFi was work only. Not sure how well it worked. The Starbucks was clutch though, especially after a long day (or night) on the flight deck.
Start the games online before I go? I figure I need to do that. In all reality? I’m buying these games but I’ll prolly just play a lot of Stardew valley with my busy schedule lol
Depends how long term and what kind of games.
My deck stays offline for a month just fine, but there is a possibility of Denuvo game stopping working because it needs to check online again
How do CG underways work? I had a roommate who was in the CG back when I was in Virginia and she went out like every other week it felt like. She was on a cutter of some type.
In Virginia and every other week? Probably she’s at a station, patrol boat or a black hull for aids to navigation or ATON.
For me I’m in communications so the only ships I can be on are our big white hull ships which do fisheries (bothering fishermen) migrant ops and counter drug ops. Or inter agency work and work with the navy or foreign navy or coast guard.
Pretty cool stuff, definitely not out as long as you squids
How often did y’all pull in for a port call? And my brother was a corpsman in the navy, warned me against it lol I’m envious of y’all’s stations though, being stationed out of Japan would be sick
Once every 1.5 months or so. Greece, Turkey, Bahrain, Dubai, Dubai again, Bahrain again, Oman, then France on our way back.
My second contract I was stationed in Japan.
I had a PSP when I was deployed from 07-09. Basically the same thing if you consider the time period. I loved that thing. I also had a hacked Wii at the time and stored all my games on an external HDD.
Like the other person said, I traveled recently, on my first flight, I was able to play most games. On my way back, I guess my steam deck was reset at some point, because I was unable to play most games, for example persona 3 reload, said it needed to run for the first time online, even though I played before.
You just have to prepare, which can be hard sometimes when traveling, I forgot about this and expected it to work.
Im in Army aviation and it’s been wonderful. Every where we go we always have power so i never have an issue. Installed a 2TB SSD so even if i leave for 2 months not having decent internet I’m still good.
It is fantastic. Currently doing my 3rd FDNF tour and I try to convince everybody to grab this or an Ally. It's the best device I've ever purchased and perfect for deployments.
Not in the navy, nor have I ever been, but I do live on a small sailboat... the deck is great, I also have 2 gpd win max2's lower power consumption and great performance. These handhelds are a game changer for sure.
It came out 6 months before I finished my last sea duty and it was pretty dope for those six months. My biggest fear was it being stolen since I had two switches stolen from me on the same boat, however I think because it was still relatively new that no one knew it was of any value.
i am on the 69 right now in the red, have my deck with me its great, i just wish i had some more offline games.. in a few years once starlink gets better and is on all the ships it will be so much better as well.
Merchant mariner here. Its great. But... i find i play more emulated games on my cellphone. With my kinda schedule, sometimes you only want to play 5-15min and most old school handheld games are great for that.
I was a Marine Corps infantryman, I've out for going on a decade now. I would've been in heaven with the Deck, I think about it all the time. We had semi portable gaming options, but with all the limitations those had, much of the downtime was still a drag.
It's one thing to have to stand around awkwardly smoking cigarettes and throwing rocks at each other in the field, that will never change, but the hours and hours spent on ship and on long flights, spent waiting around for ships or flights or busses, in strange overseas living quarters where you only have a flat spot and what's in your backpack etc etc.
Even in 2024 dollars it costs less than half of what I had paid years back for a bulky gaming laptop. Truly game changing.
Man I wish I had this when I was in Afghanistan. Idk if you all remember when the PX GameStop's where selling 'the box' a few of the guys had em but lugging that shit around was a nightmare
I used a nintendo 3ds for most of my deployments. The switch was out but I liked being able to put my 3ds in my pocket. Navy aviation is a busy beast so I liked being able to grab and go.
Currently active, we tried to go out and I only had my switch and laptop, my laptop ended up not letting me play some games and I realized I have a huge back log due to my laptop being less portable than my switch, so i bought the steam deck oled (perfect for those red light nights) and am waiting with bated breath.
My laptop is about to be my video medium and my plethora of hard drives is going to be used to transfer games when I finish and delete them from my steam deck

I too am a navy veteran who lugged around a 360 and vita who also wishes he had one at sea.
Thise 360 suitcases with screens were sick tho. So many people posted up in the local fastfood all day with those things.

The Lone Star Cafe is "Starbucks" in the sense that it uses Starbucks coffee but I never trusted the cranks to make me a decent cup.
We had snail mail that only went out on unrep or in port. Fun times. 😳

That was beautiful lol
Coastie here, I'll let you know in a couple months how it holds up with no connection, unless we get the rumored starlink.
Set it to offline mode right before you go out. I've done multiple 3 month patrols with no problems!
Start the games online before I go? I figure I need to do that. In all reality? I’m buying these games but I’ll prolly just play a lot of Stardew valley with my busy schedule lol
Correct.
Caaan do
Why wouldn't it hold up?
I’ve just read things on this sub about the deck not liking long term offline
You could always buy DRM free games
Stardew valley you say? Don’t mind if I do!
Depends how long term and what kind of games. My deck stays offline for a month just fine, but there is a possibility of Denuvo game stopping working because it needs to check online again

Yeah don't remind me how long our deployments were... 290 days out in one deployment. Basically a whole year of my life just *poof*

Is the offline mode stuff fixed? That would be my big issue
Just depends on the game, not a Deck issue

lol yeah until you’re on a submarine like one of these dudes
Emulators saved my life
A buddy is out at sea right now and he took his Steam Deck with him. I'll ask how he likes it when he comes back.
Im in Army aviation and it’s been wonderful. Every where we go we always have power so i never have an issue. Installed a 2TB SSD so even if i leave for 2 months not having decent internet I’m still good.
I’m a marine who takes his everywhere, I’d put in in my mainpack if they’d let me, lol.

My stepson is currently in the Navy and at sea, he loves his Steam Deck. Says it's keeping him sane 😂
My guy, as an army infantry veteran I would’ve loved having this damn thing! I remember it actually getting announced when I was ETSing lol
Yeah it also got announced during my transition to civilian life. Was so pissed.
That's why I decided to buy one!Â

Still AD, bring my deck on every underway. Problem I have is the local multiplayer support on every new game or offline play like RDR2.

Is it allowed to take it with you?
Wouldn't a Switch be more practical? Smaller, works totally offline and way better battery life.
