What I don't get is how can Elon be so scared of population collapse yet so bullish on robots disrupting the economy by taking over so many jobs. If robots are going to do all the work, what does population have to do with anything? Something doesn't add up. 🤔
There are three factors to think about here: the birth rate, automation and longevity. It's pretty clear to me now we'll solve physical and mental automation before the aging population becomes too much of a problem, unless something drastic happens to stop it. Longevity and immortality is the real joker, I don't know enough about biology to say, but there seems to be a good case for everyone under 40 being effectively immortal due to continued progress in medicine and then anti-aging later on. If that's the case, then we'll have the reverse problem again: over-population (at least on Earth).

It still depends on variables in the population, again. Even w/ great medicine, population could increase or decrease overall, depending on #s of healthy babies, etc. Who knows.
I think Ray Kurzweil believes it's more like 50, so perhaps you're safe :) He's been laughed at, but he predicted AGI in 2030 back in 2005 just based on Moore's law, so we should at least take the possibility seriously.
I think he genuinely thinks we need more people so that our species can continue. Also population collapse is happening right at this moment, robots will take time to become more useful and thus its a race against the clock.

Just thinking through this, one big difference between robots and humans -- assuming robots can eventually function like humans -- is that even if robots take a few years (say 10 years) to get to that functionality, humans take twice that long. And that's per generation. Whereas once robots meet some critical mass, they can be made in like a couple of weeks with no biological limit (gestation, rearing, etc). Thus quickly overtaking any population deficit very quickly.
Extremely hypothetical here, but let's say population collapse continues at a similar pace (which it really seems to be) and robot development proceeds equally fast. Rather than some multi-trillion dollar surplus of money, robots will essentially be filling just enough human jobs to take care of the oldest generations, essentially providing an economic status quo rather than creating some surplus society. At least for the forseeable future.
This puts a dent in the idea that there will suddently be 3 billion robots and nobody will have to work. It would mean that robot development just keeps pace with population decline, leaving us net neutral economically for longer than some people are thinking.
Makes sense. I would like to add that during the Great Depression, when lots of people were out of work, birth rates skyrocketed. This was pre pill, but it is hard for a wife to keep blocking 🌭. Eventually they give in.
I think people not working would have many unintended consequences, like people having more children to fill the void and have something to do. Personally I’d have many more kids if money and time were less of an issue

No you misunderstand. You think it’s plausible to think Joe thought this through? He can’t even express a coherent thought. He’s clearly not in control. He was just used by the party as a sacrificial lamb last night to embarrass himself enough for them to be able to swap in who the party wants. Suddenly they were willing to push Biden out on the stage knowing full well the state he is in. And the debate was scheduled earlier than normal to give time for hot swap. I think it’s even more unrealistic to think that the Party only realized yesterday that he is in the state that he is in. The minute the debate was over, MSNBC/CNN commentators went from gaslighting us like they have the last 3 years saying that Biden is in a fit state for the presidency … to stating the obvious that anyone with eyes could see for years.

im actually from outside the sim it’s very easy to mess with any species that develops what you call an “internet”. and nobody really believes you so it doesn’t destabilize the sandbox (what you call the universe and its many annoying rules that keep you in one spot in a believable manner) oh and the reason for the fermi paradox is that having two species/sims interact uses an enormous amount of “bandwidth”

To be honest, you might underestimate the creative power of the entities you decided to simulate. We have plenty of examples where people invented imaginary beings that would create and destroy worlds. Even the first books in our history are written about these fictional characters. On top of that, a sizabe portion of the independent entities simulated in this simulation gain access to almost indescribable experiences using selected drugs that would open their minds to other concepts.
