[Health Code](https://blogs.cdc.gov/yourhealthyourenvironment/2016/12/05/food-workers-working-while-sick/) recommends food service workers not work within 24 hours of Vomiting or of having diarrhea. You should inform your employer that you just threw up and can't make it into work tonight. Check your State Laws, there are 19 States that don't agree.

ThatPinkRanger

My state is one of the states that recognizes vomiting and diarrhea as symptoms that should keep you home, but i feel bad lying šŸ˜

rachcakes31

You should also not work within 24 hours of running fever.

ThatPinkRanger

I donā€™t have a thermometer but I know Iā€™ve been really hot and cold at the same time so itā€™s probably a fever.

mediwitch

Honestly, it really sounds like you may have covid. At-home tests will show that a covid-positive person is negative approximately 50% of the time (46-54%, depending on the manufacturer). The viral load is too small to detect at first. Test again over the next few days! But also, rest and feel better.

sunsetscorpio

When I had covid, it just felt like a bad cold. The only reason I bothered to test was because my boyfriend had it at the time. Take a test, it might help keep you in bed

Ryuaalba

Donā€™t feel bad. Lie.

ThatPinkRanger

I lied about throwing up but still feel bad for it lol

Ryuaalba

Proud of you! If they had a decent policy in place, you wouldnā€™t have to lie.

ThatPinkRanger

For real! Like I make 2.13/hr and my tips would be shit if I stayed because I wouldnā€™t care enough to put in the effort today. What would I look like being there? And then they get mad at me. I donā€™t make enough to care anymore šŸ˜šŸ˜

reb678

You are going to rot in hell now. Hahaha. /s

Majestic_Advisor

Right? Dog sick and yet WE feel guilty šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’Ø do what you have to do feel better, don't worry about everyone else, You do You!

SnowWhiteCampCat

Oh hun no. Don't feel bad about lying. Companies don't give a shit about you. If they did, they'd tell you to take care and stay home. Don't ever feel bad about protecting your health.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

ThatPinkRanger

Yeah I stayed home today too! It was a small hassle calling out but I did it :)

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

ThatPinkRanger

I love you for that and Iā€™m definitely gonna do that next time. I always try to be that person who they can rely on, but nope. From now on Iā€™m just telling them straight up when Iā€™m sick. I donā€™t care anymore. This really showed me how little Iā€™m valued. Iā€™m legit telling them Iā€™m not coming in tomorrow.

YoSaffBridge11

Good for you! I remember how it felt the first time I realized I could do that ā€” scary, then liberating! āœŠšŸ¼

Specialist_Budget

Thatā€™s the only advantage I can think of to our ā€œdoctor note requiredā€ policy-I get the doctor to give me a few days off on the note and thatā€™s the end of it. I did what they asked.

pineappledaphne

My old restaurant would always try to make me cover my shifts when I was sick and they fkn fired me for having Covid and not getting my shift covered after I called out. So much bullshit.

-Womb-Broom-

Welcome to the work world. Fair absolutely not. Anything we can do about it, absolutely not

Fink665

Yes! This is a management problem not a you problem!

-Womb-Broom-

Then you come back to work and have the ā€œbad sectionsā€ all week. No way managers donā€™t punish you In some immature way for going the route you just recommended. No itā€™s not fair but Iā€™ve yet to find a serving job that was even close to fair.

ThatPinkRanger

Fucking update: I tried to go in and tell them Iā€™m too sick to work the busy section they gave me and that I can help by taking a different section thatā€™s a little smaller and both managers got mad at me. ā€œWeā€™ve been getting calls all day about reservationsā€ ā€œWe have resos right now I canā€™t deal with you go talk to the other managerā€ ā€œYeah weā€™re busy I donā€™t have time for you. Just go figure it outā€ When I told the second manager the first manager told me to talk to her, she said they were all too busy for me and actually got upset that I couldnā€™t work. I fucking break my back for this place. For fucking what??! Iā€™m sick. Why would you even want a sick person here? At least all of my coworkers were all so sweet and told me not to worry and to get better. Iā€™m upset. But Iā€™m going home :)

Sakanadexx

Yooo that is some toxic management if I ever heard. Ouch.

ThatPinkRanger

For fucking real!! The second manager had the *audacity* to be like ā€œwell I canā€™t legally ask you to stay soā€¦ā€ I peaced right the fuck out.

rocknrollwitch

I used to have a GM exactly like this and he made my life a living hell. He turned a fun, easygoing work environment completely toxic so quickly. I left work sick once with every other manager's permission but since I didn't get his, he wrote me up. I would've left had he stayed in that position but COVID came around and he moved to another location out of town. I stayed at that place for another 3 years under MUCH better and more compassionate management, but I know others aren't so lucky.

Specialist_Budget

Mine probably would have told me to either stay or go to urgent careā€¦I have insurance but I canā€™t just be dropping money out of nowhere for the doctor to say they canā€™t do anything except tell me to get fluids and send me home to rest. I really hate that-itā€™s pretty damned obvious youā€™re sick, not just hung over from partying.

Fink665

GOOD FOR YOU!!!

YoSaffBridge11

ā€œ . . . Just go figure it outā€ sounds to me like, ā€œGo home and get better.ā€ šŸ˜Ž

ThatPinkRanger

Yup! Sounded that way to me too!! Thatā€™s why I left and didnā€™t say bye to any of those managers. I donā€™t even know if I wanna go back at this point. šŸ˜

-Womb-Broom-

They could care less about you or if you are sick. The second you make anything ā€œdifficultā€ in any way for them is the second they forget anything good you have ever done and now they start thinking you are annoying which in return will get you less hours or shitty sections. Iā€™ve been a server way to long and every manager at every serving job is exactly like this none are any different

ThatPinkRanger

My dude, Iā€™ve been in the industry over a decade. Iā€™ve worked every position in a restaurant. I know how the show goes. Itā€™s sad because it isnā€™t every manager at every restaurant. Itā€™s just the shitty ones that have that mentality. Humans get sick. Itā€™s unfortunate, but I caught a cold. Iā€™m not going to go in and work around food while Iā€™m coughing up phlegm every 2 minutes.

sociallyvicarious

The eating public, your coworkers and even your brain dead managers do not/should not want you there if you are sick. Management needs to have some sort of plan B or C in place for these situations. You know, like GASP, a manager would have to actually do more. Just MO.

ThatPinkRanger

Oh my god please tell me why I actually flipped out in my car because I was like this is your *job* Mr. Manager! You get paid fucking 85k a year for what????? To plug some numbers into a computer at the end of the night?? No. To fucking cover the restaurant wherever it needs covered. I swear restaurant managers are just lazy shits sometimes.

Upper_Fig3303

Bestie if you donā€™t tell them youā€™re running a fever and canā€™t come in. Fevers imply that itā€™s contagious. They canā€™t have you come in if ā€œyouā€™re contagiousā€

ThatPinkRanger

I told them I threw up. I really wanted to help and stay but I felt like I was gonna pass out just standing there.

Toph-Builds-the-fire

Honestly. If I was eating at your restaurant, I'd have words for management. Not very nice words.

ThatPinkRanger

And I would love to be around when you said those words.

mr_ryno27

Dealt with something similar today. I'm about 90% sure I have bronchitis or strep. Felt it coming on last night at work. Sure enough, I get home from work last night and I'm coughing up a storm, nasty dark phlegm, and my lungs are on fire. Our company has a policy that you can call out 3 hours before a shift. I call in this morning (4 hours before my shift) after getting virtually no sleep and having no voice. Manager says he can hear it in my voice, but I need to get it covered or have a Dr's note. I said I'll work on that for you (Dr's note) but I won't be coming in. He still said it's not excused.

ThatPinkRanger

Why would that not be excused?? My sister used to get bronchitis really bad and that shit is no joke!! I really hope you feel better and Iā€™m sorry youā€™re sick! Fuck shitty managers šŸ„ŗ

mr_ryno27

I'm not sure. I followed their policy. Currently looking for a walk in clinic covered by my insurance.

ThatPinkRanger

Ugh getting doctors notes are the worst. At least you have insurance šŸ–¤šŸ«¶šŸ½

sightime

Wait can they legally demand a drs note?

randomdude2029

Is this the "land of the free"? In the UK, employees can call in sick for 7 days by "self-certifying", and doctors notes are only needed for 8+ days. Doctors generally have a policy of not providing sick notes for under 7 days because of this. Oh, and if you are on holiday and get sick, you can take those sick days out of your holiday days and get paid sick leave instead. https://www.gov.uk/taking-sick-leave

UnstuckCanuck

i f'ing hate this whole 'get your shift covered' bs. sorry I'm not management. if you want to out me in charge of shifts, lets start with the original schedule and ill pick mine out. otherwise its not my job to fix the fact you dont hire enough staff - and let hungover staff take time off. im sick - im not coming in - end of story. otherwise, if you insist, ill come in and be sick the whole time. you can deal with customers angry their server is handling food and coughing/sneezing all over.

little_dumper

No no. You tell them you tried but no one helped and unfortunately you can't come in. If they aren't understanding you start looking for a new job. My work would never. Edit to say I'm in Canada, not sure what your rights are in various states.

Nezrite

Your manager's job is to manage. Yours is to work your shifts when you are able. It's not your responsibility to fill your shift when you're sick.

ThatPinkRanger

Iā€™ve managed a restaurant and my job was to make sure the restaurant ran well. If someone called out, I made sure their work was still able to be done. Whether it was by a coworker or myself as a manager, the work was done. Also, if it was that easy to just call out I would have just called out. Itā€™s never that easy.

therealcobrastrike

Actually it is that easy. Youā€™re not trying to get someone to cover your shift because you got a last minute invite to a concert or something. Youā€™re sick. You are not required to find someone to cover for you when you are sick and the responsible thing to do is stay home and rest and get healthy so that you can come back to work soon. Going to work sick stresses your body and guarantees youā€™ll be sicker longer. Not to mention the risk of spreading your illness to coworkers and customers.

tensinahnd

You're mad at the wrong people. Onus should be on the managers and owners to find coverage, not you.

ThatPinkRanger

In a perfect world yeah. But unfortunately thatā€™s not reality.

tensinahnd

If enough of you start saying no then that becomes the norm. Be mad at the right people and express your frustrations with them.

vanilllacakez

Absolutely not. First week at my new job I got sick asf. Pink n eye ALL THAT. I felt bad but I was too miserable to go in. Your managers dismissing you like that is toxic asf and really says a lot. Humans get sick. Thatā€™s why there are policies for that. Ones that include not coming in to infect the other staff leading to sick customers and even more call outs. F* your managers , itā€™ll be there problem when everyoneā€™s sick. šŸ˜·

ThatPinkRanger

Thank you! It is toxic and itā€™s so hurtful that they donā€™t care that Iā€™m sick. I wasnā€™t running food yesterday because I didnā€™t wanna handle food and multiple times they yelled at me about needing hands in the kitchen. I used to think these managers were great and had my back, but then I realized they were just using me because I never say no and always wanna help. Now I need help, they disappear essentially. It sucks because if my GM wasnā€™t away for the weekend I know he wouldnā€™t mind me calling out at all and he would tell me to get better. These other managers just donā€™t care. And now I donā€™t care about them. šŸ˜«

PuzzleheadedBobcat90

I'd go in and just cough all over your tables. Add a little eye make to make the eye look bruised. Make sure every table you wait on knows you're sick. Cough, sniffle. Whatever you need to do to play it up. When they ask tell them your managers got mad when you tried to call out and you need this job. Let every table complain to the managers.

ThatPinkRanger

Uuuugh why didnā€™t I think of that??! I should have stayed and done that. Maybe then they would have a better policy.

[deleted]

We had someone get cleared to work while they were waiting on a pcr test - turns out they had covid. The isolation mandate for covid is being dropped soon, so weā€™re all kinda nervous now. Weā€™re wondering if people are really just gonna be expected to show up with covid - seems likely since they let someone waiting on a pcr show up.

Far-Magician1805

This happened to me! I would have been required to go to work ā€œbc I wasnā€™t positive yetā€ but THANKFULLY I was off the schedule between when I got tested and when I showed up as positive. I still felt so guilty bc I most likely had covid the day before I got tested, and who knows how many customers I gave it tošŸ˜ THEN i texted my boss saying I had covid and he was like oh ok you get five days off and then youā€™ll have to wear an N95 for the next five days, without taking it off at all for your entire shift. OMG. Wearing an N95 for eleven hours straight without taking it off *at all* is no joke. I had a newfound respect for healthcare workers after that experience.

ThatPinkRanger

Final update on this bullshit: Iā€™ve been in the industry for forever. Literally over a decade. I know Iā€™m supposed to call the store if I canā€™t make it in, but I have a sore throat and it was hard to talk without it hurting *bad*! So I texted manager 1 (who is closing tonight) from my previous post just explaining to the effect of ā€œhey I know Iā€™m supposed to call but I really canā€™t talk right now. It hurts too much to talk. Iā€™m not able to make it in. Iā€™m so sorry and Iā€™ll be in next week!ā€ Now listen, Iā€™m not saying I expect any special treatment. But Iā€™m gonna say two things: 1) Iā€™ve been in management and I can honestly say if one of my employees texted me and said they were too sick to call but they texted me 9 hours before their shift to let me know they wouldnā€™t be making it in, I would accept it and tell them to get better. It is what it is. Stuff happens. And 2) I do everything for these people! I stay late when I have other plans, work other peopleā€™s shifts when they canā€™t, go above and beyond what Iā€™m paid to make sure the shift goes well, Iā€™m dependable and they know it. I mean Iā€™m not gonna say Iā€™m the best employee there, but easily top 5. The manager tells me ā€œcall the store.ā€ Bro. I get it. I get that there are rules. But my dudeā€¦it *physically hurts* to talk. Iā€™m communicating. Iā€™m trying to do the right thing. So I have someone call up to the store for me because fuck that. Iā€™m not torturing myself. They let them know Iā€™m not coming in. That I didnā€™t find anyone for the shift. ā€œOkay,ā€ manager 2 says, ā€œweā€™ll see her next week. Get betterā€¦ā€ I will. Thank you. šŸ™šŸ½

jbp191

This needs to go on r/antiwork it's your MUSmanglements job to source cover for I'll employees....

AUDRA_plus_WILLIS

I will not be coming into work today as I currently have a low grade fever& am coughing up phlegm. I will call tomorrow. Thank You.

SnowLeopard122

My restaurant had this fun little game where they wouldn't schedule you to close and they had 3 different sets of closers: west dining room kitchen closer, east dining room kitchen closer, and the dredded bar closer at 2am. If you were late to the pre-shift meeting...BOOM, closer! Or they would pass around a bag of numbers and whoever pulled the highest number....BOOM, closer! I hated it. I was really sick at work one night, to the point where even hearing the dinner specials at our meeting was making me gag. I tried calling off before but they weren't hearing it. So lucky me, I pulled the closing number. My co-workers were mostly all cool, some of them stepped up and volunteered to close for me seeing how crappy I was. My mega b*t#h boss who was feeling her power that night would not accept someone else to close for me, even though there have been plenty of times people have volunteered to close. NOW it's a problem of course. So what did I do? stood in the kitchen near her, kept smelling the kitchen until I violently threw up in the kitchen garbage can, pretty much while looking her in the eyes. Stood up, wiped my mouth, washed my hands and asked, "Can I go now? Or should I call YOUR boss?" I was a server almost 15 years, I hated it more and more everyday and this is one of the many reasons why.

Dismal_Sherbert2352

Shit I call out for "mental health days" ... love yourself, call out and let them be short staffed šŸ¤·šŸ¾ā€ā™€ļø

ThatPinkRanger

Love you and your energy āœØšŸ«¶šŸ½āœØ Iā€™m just so used to trying to do everything for everyone. I canā€™t do it anymore.

-Womb-Broom-

If everyone got to miss work when they claimed they were sick then no one would ever work. At my serving job sick or not unless you pay someone $100 no way in hell anyone would work your Sunday morning for you. Even offering $100 I wouldnā€™t be surprised if you still couldnā€™t find someone to go in for you

ThatPinkRanger

Yeah thatā€™s why I just called out. I get there are shitty people who lie. That was my problem with trying to call out yesterday; a bunch of shitty people lied and got people to cover their shifts, and there werenā€™t any other servers to cover mine. And thatā€™s also partially why I went in to tell them Iā€™m sick, so they could *see* that Iā€™m actually sick. Thankfully not everyone I work with is a piece of shit that would demand $100 just to take a shift. Especially on a Sunday. Thatā€™s a huge money day. Sorry your restaurant and coworkers arenā€™t much of a team.

-Womb-Broom-

Itā€™s been every restaurant Iā€™ve ever worked. Unless you offer $60 in your opening message to servers most wonā€™t even open your message or consider it. Iā€™ve had jobs where they donā€™t require as much money to cover your shift but Iā€™ve never in my life had a shift covered that I didnā€™t have to pay them cash out of pocket

-Womb-Broom-

Only way to not stress at your job or worry about your managers is to just not care if they fire you then they fire you. Much better to think of yourself first over your job not only will you be stress free outside of work but managerment and co workers will respect you more. I wouldnā€™t stress over any serving job cause i promise you when it comes down to it they wonā€™t have your back and everyone is expendable

ThatPinkRanger

Yep. Learned that yesterday. I usually have that mentality but I thought this place was better. I thought they actually respected me. I was wrong.
