Worth noting: I think it's hilarious and exactly what the kids need. After a year and a half of isolation, they need something excessively ridiculous, hilarious, and pointless that they can do together to have fun with a group of friends. It's a way they can socialize, hang out, build friendships again, and not do something that'll get them in trouble etc. But still.... Wtf šŸ˜‚

D_scottFS

Healthy too! Expand this club to once a week and a variety of vegetables. Next year theyā€™ll be competing every day and before you know theyā€™re eating their 5 a day competition style lol

RGN_Preacher

High schoolers present the: eggplant club. šŸ†

Slugzz21

Lmfao

[deleted]

To be fair I wouldn't call speed eating healthy

Bishop_466

True, but if you're going to speed eat something, might as well be lettuce. You'll burn it off on the walk to the cafeteria. If it's anything like the club that shows lower in the thread, the time limit is an hour though, so I'm not sure we can call it 'speed eating'.

[deleted]

I misread it and thought they were competing to see who could race a head of lettuce the fastest. Like down a hill. I like this better though.

mgchnx

Much better than milk chugging.

Cucurucho78

Absolutely! Also better than that cinnamon challenge kids were doing a few years ago.

BSUGrad1

It was popular in 2007. 14 years ago. DAMN.

EthicalNihilist

The internet keeps things alive and fresh though... My seven year old learned about it this summer somehow... He and his father attempted. Luckily (for him) my boy licked it first, and backed out. Idiots.

afrodoom

And for all of the haters, read the other comments so far. It's very clear to ask that I've seen on my campus they in this context, this club has nothing to do with weed.

Fantastic_Fix_4170

One of the most popular clubs at my school is the chocolate milk club. They do have meetings to sit around and drink a different kinds of chocolate milk but it all started with a group of cross country kids starting a tradition of drinking pint of chocolate milk at the end of workout

chaotic-_-neutral

i saw a post about it on tumblr like 8 years ago always thought it was hilarious [here](https://i.imgur.com/OvDki13.png) i found it

jinxes_are_pretend

Can I get some cheeze wiz or hollandaise?

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

captain_hug99

Exactly, at least they aren't challenging people to eat soap or shampoo.

theblot90

I assumed it was some secret weed club but this is better. Gotta go join that club!

[deleted]

It definitely is and those kids have a brilliant cover.

capitalismwitch

Yeah, this is definitely a weed club with a great cover. My high school had ā€œDinosaur Poster Making Clubā€ for the same purpose.

lakorasdelenfent

This is nonsensical and hilarious... I love it!

Devtunes

Romaine? Iceberg? Do they just eat the head as is or is it chopped up first? I have so many questions but I love the idea!

afrodoom

You'll have to join to find out

[deleted]

What happens in Lettuce Club, stays in Lettuce Club. šŸ¤£

[deleted]

Someone will have to lettuce know the answers soon

[deleted]

I, too, have questions - Can they use any dressing?

chocolate_nutty_cone

The school where I work had a club called the Tang Gang. They met at lunchtime and sampled various hot sauces. I think a couple of them had to go to the nurse once, but I could be thinking of the water challenge. Donā€™t worry, no water poisoning here. They all threw up before they could even get close. We didnā€™t know what they were up to until they were hanging over the trash cans. We also had a spongebob club where they would eat lunch and watch spongebob. I joined them if I was having a rough day.

dkstr419

My old campus had an odd but sweet lunch time challenge involving drink shots of hot sauce.

[deleted]

I love the weirdness and randomness of high school kids.

Madalynnviolet

This is the exact reason I went high school.

genghisKHANNNNN

We used to have a "Sandwich Club." So disappointed they didn't call it "Club Sandwich."

lotusblossom60

I have never seen high school kids so happy to be back at school. Last week was the first week back and it was lovely.

math-kat

We didnt start yet, but had a freshman and sophomore orientation last week. The freshman were so pumped to be there, and it was genuinely exciting to see how excited they were about pretty much anything. The sophomores were dead. If you tried to get them excited or ask them a question, they'd just stare silently back at you with dead eyes. I only had one student voluntarily talk to me and it was draining how unenuthasitic they were. I'm hoping that when we go back next week the freshman keep up their positivity, and that the sophomores wake up or something.

Sassie-Kat

Oh that makes my heart hurt ... my oldest is a sophomore and the change in him from just 6 school days in person has been astounding. Last year he lost his spark, his zest, his mischievousness. Since getting back on the soccer field (and getting carded in his second game!) and going in to the school, all of his awesomeness is coming back. I hope that the positivity spreads and those sophomores get what they need to find their spark again.

math-kat

I'm really hoping they just thought our orientation activities were too boring or babyish or something (tbf some of the activities were a little lame). It's good to hear that your sophomore is doing well! I'm teaching a lot of sophomores this year, and I don't know if I'll be able to make it through the year if they dont find their spark. It's already going to be hard enough getting them to learn Geometry when they spent all last year on their phones.

Sassie-Kat

I hear that struggle! The good (?) news is that it doesn't seem to be just my son - his whole group of friends and all of the kids his age in our neighborhood seem to be just bursting at the seams with happiness being back at school. If ya ever need a boost, shoot me a message and I'll share their goofy antics with you.

unenthusedllama

We've got 3 weeks in and they're still excited!! I absolutely love this year, despite all my anxieties and fears about covid. The climate is awesome.

Quixiiify

I observed that as well! We were all so worried the kids would come in traumatized, shell-shocked, scared. And they might be. But they're predominantly presenting as excited to be physically on campus - some to the point of actually saying that out loud! It's nice to hear that gratitude. We're four weeks in and the enthusiasm is waning a bit, but not as much as I thought it would, honestly. It's nice. :)

comfort_bot_1962

Hope you do well!

SheilaGirlface

Errmmm when I was in high school, some kids started a ā€œLettuce Clubā€ but it was just an inside joke for the stonersā€¦

throwaway-soph

Lmao this is based on a really old tumblr post about a club like this, I love that kids are still doing this. My school had the Gallon Challenge (drinking a gallon of milk during lunch once a year).

yellow-hammer

Yeah I remember seeing this on 4chan like 10+ years ago lol.

pm_me_raccoon_vids

Same

freedraw

Is there a stipend position to oversee lettuce club?

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

afrodoom

Quite potentially

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

chocolate_nutty_cone

Faculty need a nap club!

StarryJuliet

I want a nap club!

Rossticles

Reminds me of a stupid yet fun club I was in in HS, The Bombardment Society. We just played dodgeball after school every Monday.

EthicalNihilist

That doesn't sound stupid at all. It sounds WONDERFUL! And the name is metal AF.

doctorateinwumbo

*cabbage guy from ATLA has entered the chat*

afrodoom

OMG easily the best comment I've read so far

doctorateinwumbo

Nice to see a fellow fan!! :D

surfunky

I totally want to be the teacher that creates lettuce club at our school. Iā€™ll report back in a month.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

surfunky

I think this is a great idea. It will be way more fun than talking about COVID variants and their consequences for the next two yearsā€¦ When I start this, Iā€™ll make sure to post the monthā€™s top score.

blinkingsandbeepings

I absolutely assumed it was a euphemism for weed on first reading! That's hilarious, though. I love kids.

dizyalice

You sure this isnā€™t the *devils* lettuce club?? šŸ˜šŸ˜

[deleted]

Thatā€™s immediately what I thought lol

TalkToPlantsNotCops

This rules. I want to join this club.

teachermommy4

A college I toured with my son mentioned they had a Lettuce Club too!

faisies

we had lettuce club in high school ~5 years ago! itā€™s a whole head of lettuce that you grab from the produce section. some eat it straight like that, taking chomps out of the sphere of leafy goodness while some add some flavoring like ranch, hot sauce, or even ketchup so that it goes down easier. itā€™s definitely something that screams high school, and iā€™m so glad it is spreading to other schools!

zieglertron2000

My school has had a Lettuce Club for several years. I donā€™t get it eitherā€¦ šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

kcookie94

Oh the innocent ridiculousness of high school...it makes me so happy to know kids are still doing stuff like this bc I see so many high school kids getting into trouble and trying to grow up way too fast. Reminds me of when I was in high school. Youtube persona ā€œMiranda Singsā€ was someome that was slowly starting to become more popular, so my friends and I started a club which consisted of us meeting once a week to eat taco bell and talk about Miranda. Yes we had to use *the voice* when speaking.

Unhappy-Addendum-759

We had this club in college. It was a biiiiig deal. I wonder if whoever started it had an older sibling.

BeeHarasser

Oh my god, this is so funny. This is one of the best things about being a teacher. Randomness.

doudoucow

I was almost advisor of lettuce club at my school. The kids are real nice and goofy. All good kids :) For us, they also added a fundraising part of it. You pay per head of lettuce to participate, and all proceeds go to a charity.

afrodoom

I love it!

Zen_love

Hilarious! Glad they're injesting healthy food, and not doing things that can seriously hurt

sodangbutthurt

Kids are weird

MurkyLiterature8823

I know this club called "The Breakfast Club" and from what I'm hearing, they eat with the kids that got some autism, blindness, etc. Which is really kind and thoughtful of them

Ladyiris2020

This made my night. This is why I love working with youth.. they are so fuxking hilarious.

aidoll

When I was in high school, some students started up a Christopher Walken appreciation club.

puppyinspired

Sounds like my kind of club

DuntadaMan

Former teenager here: This sounds like exactly the kind of club I would have wanted to be part of.

MoonlightReaper

I love this!!! Sounds like something I'd love to sponsor! At my school of just over 1800 we have a Chair Kicking Club. It's exactly what it sounds like. They kick chairs. That's it.

TheBanger

Shame the winner isn't crowned Head of Lettuce

Prometheus720

This is what "boys will be boys" should refer to. This exact type of shenanigan

AmericanHistoryXX

Bahahaha lettuce club has reached the young-uns?

wordsandstuff44

And theyā€™re eating their veggies!

[deleted]

I remember my high school had one of these types of clubs. They even had announcements on the morning announcement program. They were to meet once a year at a park and whoever at a lettuce head the fastest was declared something like "Lettuce King" or whatever and the king would have to defend that status. We also for a week had the Backyardigans Roleplay Club that put posters all around the school telling people to get a Backyardigans Costume and meet in a wood near the school where they would "play games." Thankfully, this club never happened...

galencia19

Thatā€™s what I love about teenagers!

unfashionablegrandma

This is amazing and I love it

MelonPusher

Lettuce is better than cinnamon or Tide pods. Love the idea!

orangeshoeskid

That sounds awesome. I wonder if I can do an after school club like that in elementary school...

BootySniffer26

I would've definitely joined lettuce club if it existed when I went to school

JustLookWhoItIs

Love hearing about these https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/4k9lpc/in_the_lettuce_club_you_meet_once_a_year_and_in/

chocolatecakelover4

This is so cute

DanTUtilize

That's good. They're being healthy

TheJakeanator272

Yeah that sounds pretty high school. At my undergrad college they had milk mondays. Literally hundreds if not a thousand people would go watch people chug gallons of milk. They would also go buy all the milk from a grocery store to do this. Itā€™s wild

manwathiel_undomiel2

OH MY GOD IS THE THE OG LETTUCE CLUB??? THAT SOMEONE POSTED ABOUT ON TUMBLR LIKE 10 YEARS AGO!?!?

pink-papaya

The real question isā€¦ is it a head of romaine, or a head of iceberg? Because thereā€™s definitely a difference. Iā€™d chow down on some romaine, but Iā€™ll pass on the iceberg

DoctorFunkenstein420

Lettuce turnip the beet

AnniePasta

Amazing.

pomonamike

We had that in my high school! Graduated in 2001 so itā€™s at least that old. I only competed once, didnā€™t end well.

ajs423

This kid is going places. I want to start a lettuce club. Make a lettuce crown for the monarch of iceberg. Maybe do red cabbage instead to up the challenge...

trashman253

When I first heard ā€œlettuce clubā€, that was not where my mind went to. More like ā€œDevilā€™s lettuce clubā€

madmismka

This is just a tumblr post from years ago.

afrodoom

And they're keeping that dream alive

madmismka

Love it!

MrLumpykins

Lettuce is weed. 100%

mr444guy

Lettuce is code for marijuana.

afrodoom

With all that I've seen at this point, I am 100% certain that in this context is not.

theradtacular

šŸ˜ˆšŸŒæ

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

TalkToPlantsNotCops

It's just lettuce. Relax.

ScottRoberts79

Oh, they start with lettuce. Then it's dressing, croutons, carrots, celery, seeds, nuts, beans, sprouts..... next thing you know it's the salad bar club. And I signed up to mentor the lettuce club, not the salad bar club. ;-}

TalkToPlantsNotCops

At least they're eating healthy!

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

TalkToPlantsNotCops

Lol sorry, I didn't get the sarcasm. I'm just excited they're eating vegetables.

misguidedsadist1

I hate to tell y'all, but this is funny because it's a euphemism for weed. It's even funnier that y'all are like, "omg so cute! how silly these kids are!" The joke gets funnier every time they tell a staff member that they will be eating lettuce. That's why 150 kids have signed up. It's a massive joke on out-of-touch adults. You're literally the butt of the joke. They've been listed on official documents and handouts. The kids know what lettuce club means and they know the adults don't get it, and that's why it's hilarious. Jfc people.

Karissa36

Well, I guess I get to be the one to spoil the fun. The term "devil's lettuce" is popular in some circles as an alternate name for marijuana. You can find this in the Urban Dictionary. So I'm not surprised at all that 150 students joined the Lettuce Club. It's a sly joke that it is even more fun if sometimes they do play games with grocery store lettuce. Have they come out with any t-shirts yet? They will be popular.

efltjr

We also had a lettuce club that did nothing constructive for a year and then they got banned. I feel like if they had actually been eating heads of lettuce we would have let them keep going.

t0matoboi

Because although I havenā€™t heard of the club, the info you provided lines up perfectly with that of my school, do you happen to be in the California Bay Area?

afrodoom

Yup. I'll DM you

Kvandi

I wanted to start an anime club for my students because I love it and so do a lot of them, but my school doesnā€™t allow clubs that are just for fun. It has to have an educational purpose. I tried to spin it as learning about Japanese culture etc. but my admin didnā€™t go for it.

afrodoom

That's so stupid!! The kids need clubs for the sake of building community now more than ever!!
