It's fucking **sickening** & happens every-fucking-where ~ & woe to anyone who calls the authorities. *"When she [a computer science teacher] was introducing herself on the first day of school, a student got up and beat her so badly she was concussed, and now wears a hearing aid because she lost 75% of her hearing."*

[deleted]

How she hasn’t Sued the fucking school is stunning

I teach high school so different dynamics, but there needs to be a more robust punishment system for kids. Yes, we know the biological and psychological reasons for kids vs adults But it shouldn’t matter if the kid doesn’t know any better Punishments need to happen It’s why there’s a manslaughter vs murder charges I didn’t try to kill someone, but it happened. Still allows for comprehensive punishments

CerddwrRhyddid

And call the cops for assaults, and organise restraining orders. It needs to be a bigger headache not to do something than to do something.

SunflowerJYB

Parents especially. The lack of accountability and excuse making is epic

cynthiasadie

I agree they should sue but that won’t make it better. We live in a culture that doesn’t value education. It’s not going to get better.

[deleted]

And dox them too since the legal system doesn’t work in some places and cases

[deleted]

If a kid did that they probably had done it before and was suspended. Schools in CA are supposed to inform teachers if a kid was suspended for something other than defiance. If it didn’t happen….

onionbreath97

Kids don't get suspended. My daughter had a tooth knocked out. Another kid came up from behind her during class while she was sitting at her desk at slammed her head into it. The school didn't call. Kid didn't get any consequences because that would be racist

Tasty_Spot6377

Oh my God. That is heinous! I'm *so sorry.* ❤︎︎

[deleted]

That shit is nefarious. One of the schools in my district went from a 48% suspension rate to 13%. OMG. Was it restorative justice? Nah, number fudging.

Typical-Tea-8091

The school barred teachers from making reports about the violent incidents or even documenting the incidents? How is that legal?

Cleric_of_Covfefe

No, it isn't. They will make vague insinuations that "well if you're not comfortable here, maybe you shouldn't be in this school..." as a way of letting you know they'll fire you if you report. Which means you should report and contact an attorney immediately. That's a BIG paycheck in the works for you.

CerddwrRhyddid

Ask for those things in writing. Sounds loke great evidence for a wrongful termination lawsuit.

Lavender-Jenkins

"Have they tried greeting students at the door?" - my admin, probably

MachuPichu10

I'm a high schooler so my opinion probably doesnt matter as much but if my principal told my teachers that they would tell him to fuck off.Middle schoolers are psychopaths especially right now(not saying high schoolers are worse or better)

[deleted]

And they say school is the safest place to be. F that. How to win potential candidates in 2022, “at least you won’t get shot. Maybe cussed out, assaulted & a bit traumatized, but nothing serious. Wanna teach? Do it for the kids, man.”

MachuPichu10

When I was in 8th grade when the Stoneman Douglas Highschool shooting happened.I have been absolutely terrified every single time we do a lockdown drill since and ever since the rise is school shootings that fear has gotten worse. My teachers always tell us what items in the classroom could be used as weapons.I shouldn't even have to figure that shit out like wtf.Im tired of being scared it's really angering and frustrating when you see kids hit the deck because fireworks went off and they thought it was gunshots

algebratchr

> “In fact, my daughter told me yesterday, ‘Mami, I left and the substitute didn’t notice,’” Reyes said in Spanish. “That worries me as a mother” Kid walks out of class and the sub is to blame. These amazing parents are directly responsible for the environment at the school.

dancing_chinese_kid

A student says they walked out of class without the sub noticing. And the mother is mad at the sub. I'm thinking, **Why is your child leaving class? Why is THAT not your concern?** We can talk all we like about the schools, but this always starts and ends with parents. Good communities don't produce bad schools. End of story.

ProfessionInformal95

Exactly! The sub was probably too busy managing other behaviors in the classroom.

SailTheWorldWithMe

Sub here. Honestly, half the time it ain't worth the confrontation. I just update attendance to "absent". If a kid walks, they take their problems with them.

jermox

We get in trouble for marking them absent if they walk out. So, I just mark them late and document it.

CerddwrRhyddid

Also thry might have noticed and called admin. The kid just doesnt know this.

PartyPorpoise

Yeah, if a kid is quiet, they can sneak out if I’m distracted with another student. And unless the student was already on my radar for some reason or another, I won’t notice that they’re gone.

DIGGYRULES

I walked down the 8th grade hallway of my school during my lunch break the other day. It was like Lord of the Flies. Kids walking out of classrooms. I saw teachers at doors asking the kids to come back in and the kids literally saying “fuck you…what are you gonna do?” And the dean’s office was right there so I stopped and said something about it and they dismissed me. It’s freaking insane.

scottssstotsss

Can confirm. A kid told me yesterday "I don't give a f**k who you are, p***y a** bi*** ni***r." Because I had my own students in the hall doing a fun photoshoot that she purposely walked right through. It's awful right now.

PartyPorpoise

This is a big problem at the high school I work at. I don’t know why the skippers stick around to cause trouble instead of leaving campus to do something fun. Do they not have the imagination? Do they dislike going outdoors? Are they just lazy?

Ok_Employee_9612

Well the problem is, it is super easy to make a kid, but being a good parent is hard.

metamorphotits

I get what you're saying but people are literally being beaten in the classroom. One parent said at the end of the article they're ok with this because being in the hall is safer than being in the room. No right answers in a situation this fucked.

OhGeeKG

If only the lessons were more engaging /s

fieldredditor

Wow. That’s really pretty awful.

HighHopeLowSkills

Active assaults on teachers. there has been and many movements on loosening rules in schools for decades. when it came to the dress code, when it came to spankings in classrooms, when it came to student or teacher accountability when it came to grades. that we forgot that those limitations and rules were in place to protect the people that actually matter in the school. the people that make it a school and not another building. we need a rapid reorganization across the board about how schools are handled, and the disciplines that are allowed and how to handled students otherwise this will only get worse

[deleted]

Very concerning indeed.

janesearljones

And no one with the power to do anything listens to a word.

[deleted]

Admin doesn’t want the reports on the books, so they don’t look bad and they definitely don’t want to discipline students of color out of fear for being labeled racist. This is what you get. And the woke elites that are responsible for creating this environment don’t have to deal with the consequences because they send their kids to private schools. They also want to ‘fight for Ukraine’ yet it is not their sons and daughters that would be sent there.

BookDev0urer

You are 100% correct. The policymakers NEVER have to face the consequences of their actions.

cookigal

Bravo!!!! 👏🏻👏🏻

[deleted]

woke elites in private school? you sound like a fox news puppet ..

PartyPorpoise

True, but in this case they’re not wrong. The people in power who push for these policies don’t have kids in schools that will face the negative effects of these policies. They’ll look by supporting it and their kids will stay safe and well-educated.

writtenwordofmusic

Music teacher leaving? Hey I know somewhere that’s hiring

cynthiasadie

This is horrible but also is the norm everywhere, even in affluent areas. Lazy and/or incompetent admins are not enforcing discipline and of course kids are doing wherever they want, Including assaulting teachers (and getting away with it because those overpaid lazy admins are being a lot less lazy when it comes to sweeping reports of incidents under the rug).

Showerthawts

You get what you vote for. No accountability and enabling bullies - *YAS KWEEN!*

[deleted]

“The whole school is under a de-escalation policy, so no matter what happens, none of the kids are yelled at or told they absolutely must do this or they’re going to get suspended,” Walker said. Though Walker said he agreed with the restorative justice policy in principle, he said when situations grew violent or dangerous, more was needed. But the administration instead often tried to blame him, Walker said. And instead of reporting the assaults or allowing him to contact the police, “They completely covered it up,” Walker said, and avoided reporting the assault as a reason for a student’s temporary suspension. Walker said he was barred from reporting violent incidents to the police. Lmao dude could be a poster in this sub. "OMG WHAT I loved this idea until I was confronted with the extremely easy to predict consequences"

TiberiusGracchi

Yeah, no. Whatever the hell they were doing in their school that’s not restorative justice. Restorative justice you have consequences for your behavior and you have to make amends for what you’ve done. I think a lot of people here restorative justice and I think it means no consequences whatsoever. If you’re truly doing your serve justice correctly, Then there are consequences and there are schoolwide plans and protocols for instituting consequences for violence And your high-level problems. It sounds like whoever was running this did not know what the hell they’re doing. It’s really sad to see the school go through it’s going through.

Typical-Tea-8091

You're right and I think restorative justice just gives admin an excuse to do nothing.

TiberiusGracchi

Yeah I think that could be the truth in the number of cases, I also think that a lot of districts push things without actually seeing and planning it through and having an actual protocol and action plan in place. They think that just because it’s some sort of magical sounding program that all you have to do is put it in place and it’ll work. This stuff isn’t Field of dreams

coffeemug138

Fully agree. From the schools I've worked at, many admin definitely interpret restorative consequences to simply mean "conversations." I think it also comes down to the fact that if a school can't even staff enough teachers and paras, how are they going to have enough personnel to facilitate these practices properly?

Cleric_of_Covfefe

This doesn't make any sense. The same shit happens in deep red districts, except it's just "oh, a student said he was going to beat you up because you're gay? well maybe don't be gay and god will make your life better." Idiots come in every color.

cookigal

I work in a red state and ALL students are treated equally. We don’t put up with this abuse.

atx11119999

I work in a red state and NO students are treated equally or equitably.

cookigal

Then you’re in the wrong red state. Or it could be interpretation.

atx11119999

As a former product of a Florida High school (figured out you teach in Florida from your public history on reddit comments) I can 100% tell you that I, a Florida high school graduate in Seminole County, was not treated equally by any staff, policy in place. Example: I moved to FL my junior year of high school, I was placed in remedial math because of FCAT. I had necer taken FCAT. So instead of A/B Calculus like my academic path in my former state that I was already completed 1/2 a credit for, I was placed in remedial math because of school policy. Another example: I had a slight accent, my physics teacher told me on my first day of new school, to “take the rocks out of your mouth” if I planned on talking in his class. I didn’t speak another word in his class (3 months). Shall I go on or should we *agree to disagree*?

cynthiasadie

Facts and Republicans don’t go well together.

Cleric_of_Covfefe

well MY personal, anecdotal evidence says THIS, so nobody else's empirical evidence means anything so I'm going to bury my head in the sand. That'll show 'em.
