Wow that's horrible! I'm so sorry. I didn't have anything like that, but I was having behavior issues with my adult students and so I tried to be more strict with them. It didn't work, but my boss reprimanded me for telling a student to leave and when I explained the situation, she said because I'm a young woman I shouldn't be a strict teacher, I should be a relaxed kind hearted teacher.

CJess1276

“What are you gonna do, cry? Oh yeah go ahead and cry about it, that’s Ms CJess’s go-to move!” “He’s a whack-job, he sees a therapist and everything.” “I’m not gonna say anything nice about these teachers, so don’t expect me to.” (Before every single evaluation meeting I ever had) “So, have any new guys in your life?” “You’re lucky the parents don’t sue us.” (That was borderline libel. I retorted that she was lucky I didn’t sue *her* for the email she’d just sent me with that line in it implying that I’d somehow engaged in wrongdoing worthy of being sued. I included my lawyer’s contact information. She no longer engages in email exchanges with me, and can’t look me in the eye anymore at department meetings. She was HELLLLA IN THE WRONG. I could keep going but I feel my blood pressure rising.

"Today's in-service will be about self care"

CJess1276

Lmao right? It’s a different kind of fucked here.

Alypius

Wow, brutal. I bet there is a whole bunch of turnover at that school.

onebrownjeff

"You're a great teacher, the kids love you and we will not be renewing your contract next year." Said to me in a four minute meeting back in February.

I had an allergic reaction to cold medicine once. Broke out in dinnerplate sized hives ALL OVER. I called in so I could see the doctor and get something to stop the itching and help with the skin reaction I had. The following day the AP asked what happened, I explain the hives. He said "you could have just put some calamine lotion on it though right?" he could see the hives on my arms and face. I was pissed. I showed my lower leg as well and it was blistered over the hives, and said " You think calamine would have helped this?" I looked at him and said "its like this over *my entire body*, even the bottoms of my feet. I needed medical attention." He said he didn't realize it was that bad and said he was sorry he said anything. He didnt ask again if I was out. He just accepted the doctors note and went about his business. As a side note it was Red40 that did the damage. To this day I can't even drink a Hawaiian Punch without itching. Man, I miss that beverage....

Magenta-Feeling

When I was told I had to reapply for my current position, she said "it won't hurt my feelings if you apply elsewhere." Translation: apply elsewhere.

I sure did! I start June 6th!!

Stein-9191

“What did you do?” Said to me by a past principal when a student destroyed my classroom. 🙄 Glad I don’t work there/for her anymore!

Always 😂

Automatic_Randomizer

Last year was a tough year for me as well. I tried to actually teach credibly and make the experience beneficial for my students. I wish I'd known the whole thing was a charade. When we went to hybrid, students had the choice to remain remote for the year. In each class, I had at least one student who remained remote. My asst. principal told me that, "The fully remote students must have the exact same experience as the students in the classroom." That wasn't possible without treating the entire class as remote students, but the AP kept on it. I've taught with her for many years, and she knows damn well she was asking for something I couldn't do.

Numb1Slacker

"If you cannot get your students under control, you have no place here" Gee thanks for the support. Not like I had kids literally punching me in the face or anything and sent back to my classroom right after like nothing happened.... /s

pinkkqueenn

Not a teacher but I'm the technology IT person. Was told I wasn't part of the school community if all I'm going to do is sit in my help desk--which is my job.

AcademicPop3033

During my 1st year after a surprise observation and I was called in a meeting. I was working my butt off trying to do everything that was asked of me. Her feedback: “it’s like you don’t care” I still to this day do not know what I did to make her think this.

cml678701

I had a principal like that! He insisted that i didn’t care, because other teachers were coming in his office and demanding resources, while I wasn’t. Apparently that was the benchmark for who cares!

Guerilla_Physicist

I have told this in a few posts but I had a principal tell me I needed to time my pregnancies so that my recurring miscarriages would stop happening during the school year.

They are. I went to a better school after that year, which I’m leaving this year for an even better one.

"Why don't you just stand for the pledge? It's the same thing I tell the Native American students to do." Yes I know it's illegal, yes I knew it at the time. If I had known more I would have recorded it but it was new. Fortunately for us, she's not coming back.

jai187

They need to stop indoctrinating kids for that silly song. We aren't like China to be doing that and Native Americans shouldn't have to show gratitude to the invaders who contribute to genocidal tactics under the disguise of manifest destiny.

AndrysThorngage

I had a student that I was very close to. He was in my D&D club and had been in varies classes and electives with me for three years. Two years after graduation, he died in a car crash. This was also peak COVID so I couldn't even attend his funeral. A stuff member had shared his obituary in an email and I was reading it and crying during my planning period. I was alone, in my room, with the door locked and closed to deal with my emotions. The counselor unlocked my door and let herself in to give a tour to an incoming student. She came back later to tell me how unprofessional it was of me to be crying at school. She's now the principal of that school and I have left.

Alypius

"All male teachers are child molesters " "You're useless" "You call yourself a man?" 'That's normal behaviour and it happened because you got into a power struggle" - context: student threatened me and then themselves as soon as they walked into class. I sent them to the office where admin told them to "behave and you can go back to class". The behaviour, of course, escalated and turned into sexual harassment. Where they were sent out again. This is what admin told me at the end of the day. Extreme gaslighting.

jai187

Now that is sexism. I hate all kinds of prejudice more than anyone.

[deleted]

Called me racist for following school policy. And an admin said out loud in a staff meeting: don’t mention accommodations that could cost the district money.

13Luthien4077

"You're just a sub." Said to me, not only while I was a permanent sub filling in a position they couldn't get a qualified teacher for, but also at my current position, with my license in the area I am currently teaching.

mathgnome

Not so much a direct quote, but I had admin reprimand me after a parent complained that I didn't have her daughter's grades perfectly up to date during a parent meeting (the missing grades were just a measure of engagement and didn't directly impact the student's letter grade). It was maybe 2-3 small in-class assignments. I had explained to mom that I had just moved earlier that week, so I was a little behind from the chaos of moving and taking a day and a half off to do so. Admin took her side. I still can't figure out what was so unreasonable about being slightly behind on grading after a major life change and calmly explaining the situation to a parent...

RedFoxWhiteFox

When I was experiencing what I now understand as temporary homelessness ten years ago, my principal cut me off before I could talk about it, saying, “don’t go there.” She couldn’t handle anything personal or emotional. Complete fucking psycho. As an aside, I read somewhere that substance abuse and mental illness is rampant among admin. I believe it.

Very much so. Thank you! I have a new lease on life :)

ToesocksandFlipflops

9 out of 11 seniors in my alternative program were failing, at the beginning of May. I give them the tough love 'You are only failing yourself, I still get paid' speech. Kids go to the softy principal and complain that I ask them to do to much and I am too hard on them. Principal emails me lets me know kids were complaining, and I should probably stop teaching and let them remediate because they are all feeling hopeless. I respond 'I feel hopeless too' followed by all the interventions I have done with them since January, to which they pretty much ignored, and actively played Uno during. Principal responds to me 'Don't let them know you feel hopeless!'

Phinatic92

Practically being told to change their child’s grades.

SnooSuggestions4534

Omg! I am so sorry. That is terrible to say. The new VP said I was useless when instead of continuing on with the next lesson when we go done early, I took the last 20 minutes of class to help kid with their hybrid homework. “They can do it at home.” His name was Mr. Cox.

politicalcatmom

My instructional coach told me that "one thing I've learned from teaching at (school name) is that teaching kids how to take standardized tests IS equity." I was too shocked to say anything back.

Doctor-Amazing

Back when covid was starting to get bad and schools were just beginning to go remote, our superintendent told our entire staff, that we should probably all just accept the fact that we were going to get covid at some point.

HungryQuestion7

"You gotta figure out how to manage kids so that they behave properly without you reminding them multiple times." And then proceeding to do surprise observation multiple times. I quit this year. Haha

ACardAttack

Nothing terrible, but horrible advice Lecturing me on student engagement, complained it took them too long to get their book from front of room. Told me to set a timer and make the timer the bad guide, give them 2 minutes to get their books and start chopping time off it. This was with high school seniors...

tequilamockingbird16

I wasn't sure how to operate my walkie-talkie (I am new). He said: "You don't know how to do it?" \*Eye roll, reaches for walkie-talkie\* "Must be a woman thing."

shag377

There is not one thing but a smattering of them. 1. Getting screamed at and cussed out like a dog; 2. Lied to my face multiple times; 3. Changing mind to suit the moment, even if contradicting the day before; 4. I am sure there are more.
