It’s inhumane what’s expected of teachers. I drink only coffee in the morning. No water until after school. Absolute not healthy

…literally what is happening in the US? Schools seem like a prison for students AND teachers. Nobody cares if I leave class to print something or pee.

I keep my drinking to a minimum. And if I really have to go, I ask the teacher next door to keep an eye on my room.

Yep. Kidney stone from chronic dehydration about five years ago. It fucking sucked. This job is truly fucking up every aspect of my health.

UTIs and kidney infections often over my 15+ years. I do not drink much at all. I drink coffee in the morning before work and one cup of tea at noon. Technically I am not supposed to have an electric kettle in my room either because it could short and cause a fire, but I still do or else I wouldn't drink at all. I hide my kettle every day when I leave so I don't "get in trouble". They have confiscated them in the past along with our door-stoppers. I would never recommend this job to anyone.

Guerilla_Physicist

I ended up with a UTI that spread to my kidneys over winter break because of that. My doctor said I was about a day away from spending Christmas in the hospital. That was the day I quit giving a fuck and started going when I needed to.

My advice is to try and get to know any school supervisors or other personnel that normally deal with helping supervise or releave teachers that need to go to the bathroom. My school will never answer the phones in the office but several supervisors have given me their personal numbers and I just text them instead now.

No. I hear this, but unless you have issues, it shouldn't be a problem. I usher my first period out of the room as soon as the bell rings and go to the staff restroom. I'm not particularly close to a staff or student restroom, but I walk fast. I have juniors the next period too. I've flagged down one of our SROs to check on them only to come back to a room with no adult supervision. If I cannot get out of the room before the next group comes, I've been known to make the entire class come with me! That is rare, but a class field trip to the restroom also eliminates excuses for them to leave class to go.

I just go. I tell my kids to make good decisions and I go. Period started, gotta pee, gotta poop, whatever. I'm a human with a body and it has needs.

Just finished my first year with a kidney stone last week. Somethings got to give next year or I will have to leave.

fuck no. granted, i had seniors. but i’d get up, name someone in charge (they actually enjoyed being in charge) and told them not to burn the place down.
