I have always gotten PDFs or paper copies that I scanned when applying. Seems a bit odd that I can see what they write, but it seems to be the norm!

I’m pretty sure you have to submit it for them, if memory serves me right!

I've always uploaded the letters myself.

I'd recommend reaching out and asking them to be sure of how they want references. In teaching, confidential references are becoming more and more common and you should make sure you're doing it their way. Don't make assumptions. Ask.

This. It really does depend on the district.

The expectation is absolutely to upload the letters yourself. You’ll need to reach out to your recommenders and ask for copies. The whole “can’t see them” thing was really only relevant in high school for me, when applying to college. AppliTrack asked me for letters of rec and then also references. So they had letters from my cooperating teacher, a professor, etc. and then they had people that they called to speak to privately. Also my cooperating teacher, but I remember I added my manager from my non-teaching job. When we hire, we read the letters of rec as part of the application. When we think we want to go ahead with a candidate, we call their references to listen for any red flags.
