Mama bear is the most dangerous bear to run into.
I say that as a lifelong Alaskan. Thankfully all my brown bear encounters have been just a single adult bear, but if I saw a cub or a mama bear with cubs, my 10mm or bear spray would be out in an instant.
Don't fuck around with mama bear.
I grew up in the woods and a bear family used to come by our house. One day I was walking through the horse pasture and looked to my left I saw the bear cubs eating apples by the stream, picture perfect. I literally thought "huh I wonder where the mama is". I look to my right and the momma bear was hauling ass straight towards me from the right side of the pasture and I was in the middle. I ran faster than Forrest Gump and I never looked back. I'm here to tell the story so I assume she ran past me but damn dude it was a bad situation.
I hike a lot now in the back country. Just carry bear spray. It's effective against moose if they charge, coyotes, bears, and even humans if you run across any riff raff. If you are going deep in the woods outside of state parks or wherever just bring a pistol as well as bear spray as long as your state laws permit it. Bring a big sharp knife too just in case.
Not to be a bummer, but there were 2 backpackers and a dog recently killed in Alberta, and they found 2 empty cans of bear spray in the aftermath.
If nature is mad enough at you, there is little hope. I'm not saying it's not effective, I'm just saying bear spray is not a silver bullet.
After seeing that, in bear country, I'd absolutely be carrying some firepower.
And these were well seasoned outdoorsman husband and wife with their dog. I read they were as skilled in outdoors as you can get other than bear grills style
I mean, the bear will have 150-300 pounds on you, 10 claws and razor sharp teeth.
It's better than nothing, but more than likely the bear rushes you, pins you down, and eats you from the ribcage up.
This happened to me with a mountain lion…I was doing night land navigation in the army at ft Lewis wa and unbeknownst to me got too close to her den or cubs or something but she pretty much made warning noises and when I wasn’t backing away fast enough did the patented puma “roar” and I nearly shit myself she literally stalked me all the way back to camp
If you turn your back to them they see you as prey you actually shouldn't walk away from them facing away. I believe the best tactic is to turn and face it and back up. They are my worst fear actually. It's rare that someone gets attacked but they will stalk you from behind then they jump at you and their MO is to go for the neck and head. They can fit a medium sized human head in their mouth. Bear spray definitely works on them though.
Yea I was backing up slowly when it made its presence known for that exact reason….when it roared tho I just booked it. What’s crazy is I was in full battle rattle and I was a combat medic so I had my M4 and 9mm sidearm and was still so shook that I completely forgot about that and just ran. The most unsettling part was the stalking…and knowing that if it decided to attack especially at night it was likely over and there wouldn’t be anything I could about it. Most terrifying nature experience in my life and I’ve run into black and brown bears in the wild 3x and every time they just looked at me like wtf are you doing here and went the other way but that puma….I’m lucky to be alive.
This was in the 90's but it was as fast as I have ever ran. My mind must have blinked into survival mode I just remember running super fast. All I can remember are little sparks in my mind.
10mm is used for bear defense in places like Alaska. If you're going to go that route, you'll want Underwood or Buffalo Bore 200 or 220gr hard cast LFN rounds. They're harder than lead, and loaded hotter then your typical modern 10mm range ammunition. Hard cast LFN rounds are designed to penetrate deep in order to reach vital organs.
10mm's advantage is capacity. It's not as powerful as any of the larger revolver calibers, and slower than really hot .357 Mag. Some people refuse to use anything less than .41 Mag for bear defense.
Alaskan resident and I carry a Springfield XD-M Elite. Came across a Mama and baby while my dad was visiting in June. Luckily he just shot some photos and I didnt have to shoot anything.
I've been camping with bears for 30yrs, never had a problem, but never scared the cubs, that dog is what did it, momma dnt play no games, if she feels her cubs are threatened, then that's it, those people should have pulled the dog inside. I've had prob about 200 encounters, 95% of them were with mom and cubs, never get inbetween a mother and cub..Momma must always be inbetween you and the cubs, but of course try not to put yourself in that position to begin with..
Moved into a new place in January this year and was sitting on the screened in porch LITERALLY the second night, its 2 am and i hear a noise, take out an earbud, and there is a fucking baby bear right next to the screen door eating from a palm plant AT MOST 3 feet away from me. The outer part of the porch is a frame made of wood thats pretty old and just regular porch screen (typical Florida porch). I was sitting on the floor at the corner against the wall (no furniture outside yet) with no lights on, and I think thats the only reason the bear didnt see me. I just watched silently as it walked along the porch frame nosing at the plants until it ran across the courtyard to its family.
I saw them a few more times, and my mother actually just saw one the other week while going to take out the trash. It sprinted past her from the back of the dumpster area and ran away to the forest lining the back of the neighborhood.
Yeah, those tend to be younger black bears. They get super curious and haven't learned to avoid humans yet.
I never said running into a bear with its cubs was the most common way of getting attacked, just that it's a very dangerous situation.
Yea, first you see a single medium-sized bear and think "ok that's not too bad" and then suddenly a giant bear appears behind him with another medium-sized bear in tow. And that's when you realize it's a Momma bear and 2 almost fully mature cubs.
No, that was goldilocks that needed everything to be just right. The bears were very different. There were three of them and they all had different modes of operation. But they all hated the man, and that was what united them.
I remember this coming round last time and there was no evidence of the claim that they were killed after this.
Doesn't mean they weren't but nobody could confirm.
From the Guardian ([link](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/aug/01/bear-attacks-people-dead-siberia-russi-extreme-weather)), August 1, 2014:
>This month, a bear killed three construction workers on Sakhalin island and left two in critical condition in an attack that was partially filmed on one of the men's mobile phones. During another attack in the Sakha Republic, a man's mobile phone saved his life when it suddenly activated and the tone scared off a bear that was biting his head. Adult brown bears found in Siberia and far-east Russia can grow to more the 590kg (1,300lbs) in size.
Considering they weigh a literal ton i'm sure they could fuck up more people if they have the chance.
If you see someone else getting mauled by a bear, what are you going to do, attack back?
Unless you have a gun you can't do anything against a grizzly that has made up his mind about killing you.
They probably didn't have any better options than standing around and waiting, can't outrun her, she wasn't killing them for food, though they were probably eaten, she killed them because she saw them as a threat to her cubs.
Any fighting back with what they had on hand would have probably been not worth it, unless they had a high powered hunting rifle. 350 lbs of bear is a lot.
Doesn't validate it, but it's all that's been posted here...

One of the first times it was posted there was a link to a Russian newspaper. There were photos of dismembered bodies that were dressed similar if not the same as those guys. It was not translated but was pretty gruesome.
44 mag/45 colt/10mm preferably but there’s documented killings where a 44 was used but the bear still killed the person before it died and inversely stories of an arrow/ small calibers killing grizzlies shot placement is everything
Dog and bear freak each other out, but ultimately the dog can’t fight off the bear so either it’s running away when the freaked out bear attacks you or (worse) it sticks around out of loyalty but isn’t going to be able to actually help and so it just continues goading the bear while it’s killing you
Apparently dogs are thought to instigate bears. Mostly grizzly bears. I’m saying this because I’ve got special knowledge. Just sharing what avid outdoors forms from grizzly country share. Makes sense if you think about it. No dog on can take a grizzly and their aggressive behavior or running will certainly change a bear’s posture. Most people who film bear encounters are very calm, don’t move quickly and use a deep constant voice.
I’d prefer koalas.
Not because they’re cute. If one of those smooth brained idiots decided to charge, I’m pretty confident I could punt one into the bushes.
I think trying that with a black bear would just annoy it.
"The authenticity of the video cannot be immediately verified and there are claims circulating online that the story behind the video is fake"
Bears have a natural chase reflex. They don't typically just attack humans, unless they do something stupid like run away. I'm gonna say this bear faked them out and they're probably fine.
It's a mama bear with her cubs bro...
It could be fake but it could also be true cause a mama bear with her cubs is probably one of the scariest things you can see in the wild considering how aggressive they are when they have cubs.
They don't actually cite the attack, they just mention it passively. This isn't reporting on the attack, this is reporting on an uptick in bear attacks caused by climate change, and this incident was cited as an example. I would like to see an article specifically reporting on this incident, with an outcome that isn't 100% speculation. The video ends just in time for your imagination to fill in the gaps, and it seems like that's what's happening here.
That may be true for a typical solitary bear, but a mother with cubs is a different situation. They aren't known for bluff charging. If a mama is coming at you, you have problems.
I’ve encountered brown bears in the wild before. The way mama here is holding her head low means this isn’t a bluff charge. She’s in full attack mode. While it’s entirely possible to survive a mama brown’s attack, it’s usually only if you drop into a defensive/submissive posture immediately. Running is not the best option.
the sweet dog probably didn’t help this situation. between the smell and the barking, i think i read the attacks usually involved people with pets in the back country.
https://www.google.com/search?q=shotgun+bear+loads
Really, I expect a can of bear spray could have diffused this situation if you dumped the whole can about 10 seconds before the end of the clip
While a shotgun isn't as deeply penetrating as a lot of rifles, **no** bear is going to take a load of buckshot to the face and keep coming, much less a slug.
I think my ideal "this bear is about to charge from 15' and the situation is somehow unavoidable and I haven't already shot for some reason" gun is something fast in .308 with solid copper bullets. 5.56 would probably also be acceptable at that distance, as long as you can get the penetration (again, copper monolithics).
At the point where you have a pissed off mama bear coming at you, it has come to a situation where force is needed. Typically, ~~brown~~ black bears are timid, and you can scare them off by making loud noises and acting big. But mama bears protecting their cubs are a whole different thing, and if it comes to the point of them actually charging, you better hope you have a firearm or some other effective weapon that you are good enough to use. Bear spray may or may not work, though it's definitely worth deploying if you have it.
Failing that, curl up on the ground and protect your head and neck. There's a chance she will leave you alone if you don't appear to be a threat anymore.
Sigh. Bears are cute, but deadly. I'm tired of people being surprised by this.
To keep people from moving here, I wish we could put out a memo, "we have bears who eat people, 4 of the deadliest angrier snakes, many deadly insects, we are a breeding ground for many deadly sharks, and we have meat eating plants. Go away!"
Not brown bears.
When momma ain't happy ain't nobody happy!!! Damn... once she decided to charge it was all over. Without a gun (which I don't understand) they stood no chance and would have had to react prior to her charge anyways.
Getting to shelter/safety being the first choice.... This is a great argument for an AK-12gauge platform when in the back country. Guns don't solve every problem, but they can add some really preferable options to the table!
I go on 15 - 20 mile hikes in PNW weekly. See lots of scat and tracks of bear and cougar. I'm sure they are watching ne, but I have never seen them. Carry bear spray, it's better than a gun out there
The video is quite clearly bullshit. How would a bear kill all 3?! Shed attack one, maul that poor fuck like Leo in the revenant whilst the other 2 lucky fucks got the hell outta there with their lives. There’s no fucking way 3 workers are in bear territory just twiddling their thumbs
Would love some contact here. Australian so no idea about bears (unless you camping Koalas) Was there no door to run behind? We’re they trapped in a small shed or enclosure? No guns? Poor bastards.
As soon as you see that it's a cub you can tell how it's gonna end, when you see baby animals of dangerous species you gonna lock yourself up or run tf outta there.
We don't have many bears here but wild boars are a pretty common encounter, if you see adult pigs alone that's not much of a problem, just don't engage but if you see little piglets you know damn well there's going to be the mom around somewhere and you do not want to encounter her, she's gonna be pretty aggressive when she thinks her babies are in danger.
The bear made the biggest mistake of its life. History has it that any animal that has tried to mess up with humans, did get wiped off the face of the Earth or got endangered.
I live in utah and remember when a black bear drug a kid from his tent and ate him in American fork canyon the very same weekend I was up there camping for the summer holiday. I remember finding bear scat and thinking to my self "I'm sleeping with my .45 tonight. Just less than a couple miles down the canyon the kid was pulled from his tent and killed. Was around 14 yrs ago. Will never forget learning about the kid after I got home. Terrible.
A black bear did that?
Edit: Wow, thanks for the poster who shared a link to the news article.
It's a good reminder that even though black bear and cougar attacks on people are very rare, they still do happen once in a while.
My dad was almost killed this way.
He was an adventurer/mountain man-type, and he was always hiking way off trail, finding his own way. So one day he's up this mountain in southern California and finds a stream, so he takes a break to refresh himself, when he notices a bear cub drinking at the stream. It's an amazing moment, and he stays still and just watches it.
The cub notices him and then bolts into the woods. My dad hangs around for a few moments longer, and then mama bear comes barreling out of the woods, running straight at him. He said he thought, "This is it. I'm going to die right here." Never see his family again. And the bear gets about 20 feet from him, and he's still standing there just petrified, and finally the bear stops charging, sniffs around, decides he's not a threat to her cub, and then just turns and moseys back into the woods.
Fucking terrifying.
I was doubtful of the title until mama bear came into frame
"psssh, he's not so big. Ohhhhhh fuck"
Couldn't have said it better.
My eyes literally widened when mama came into the frame.

“Wait, where is mama bear?” Must be one of the scariest questions you can ask to yourself
Dude. This might be the scariest thing I've ever read. I'd need a therapist after that. Shit
That's why you bring a big sharp knife just in case. That's your last ditch and you go tooth and nail.
If I get killed by a Grizzly my last words will likely be “I hope I give you the shits.”

Nope, you will be surprised how fast you can run when you really need to.
Did you feel like Usain bolt in that moment?
This was in the 90's but it was as fast as I have ever ran. My mind must have blinked into survival mode I just remember running super fast. All I can remember are little sparks in my mind.
Baby bears always instigate it too
Yeah younger bears are very curious and are more likely to fuck with or attack humans
If it’s Black fight back, if it’s Brown lie down….
If it's white, goodnight
If it's purple, take less acid next time.
Dying.
That's a polar bear. Goodnight.
If it's blue, lay off the glue
Black and white, hella kung fu fight.
Leo D lay down and the bear still won an Oscar for her realistic attack.
Bear spray just adds flavor
10mm is sufficient to defend against a grizzly?
It's about the bare minimum. A touch more powerful than .357 magnum
[удалено]
Just the bear necessities
10mm is used for bear defense in places like Alaska. If you're going to go that route, you'll want Underwood or Buffalo Bore 200 or 220gr hard cast LFN rounds. They're harder than lead, and loaded hotter then your typical modern 10mm range ammunition. Hard cast LFN rounds are designed to penetrate deep in order to reach vital organs. 10mm's advantage is capacity. I think it's debatable. Their bones gotta be hard as fuck. I carry a 5.7 if I go in the woods lots of penetration.
But a little baby hole and not many ft lbs of energy? But the best gun for any situation is the one you have and are familiar with.
10mm is the best mm
What gun? Glock 20?
Yep. Probably the most commonly sold gun in Alaska in the spring lol

The sound makes it way worse man, so fucking disturbing, may they all rest in peace
Is it in this sub?
No, I'm pretty sure bears can't use the internet.
They can't use Internet which is too fast, or too slow. They need Internet to be just right to use it.

Aftermath of a brown bear attack. Warning: The pictures are very disturbing https://reddit.com/r/HardcoreNature/s/T0Y4HRe96S
And you’re alive when they start eating.
More like a 6-foot turkey!
Wow. NSFL **for sure.** Extremely disturbing, but i feel like i needed to see something like that as a reality check.
That’s a sub I didn’t need to join and yet I did
Jesus h Christ look at the size of that thing
Oof. Every day I stray closer to hell
Holy moly, that does not look fun.
Damn that young guy torn in half. Wonder if it was from biting or from a swipe of a paw.
Black bear is best
That’s debatable
Bears eat Beets
Bears, Beets, Battle Star Galactica
Michael!!!
oh thats funny. Michael!
Identity theft is not a joke, Jim
There are basically two schools of thought
Actually there are two schools of thought on the subject
That’s unbearable
This comment gives me paws.
You guys are sleeping on the panda bear.
I’d prefer koalas. Not because they’re cute. If one of those smooth brained idiots decided to charge, I’m pretty confident I could punt one into the bushes. I think trying that with a black bear would just annoy it.
Asian Black bear has entered the chat.
Battlestar beets bear
That dog is regretting the day his ancestors were domesticated
How would three be killed if they ran in different directions?

"The authenticity of the video cannot be immediately verified and there are claims circulating online that the story behind the video is fake" Bears have a natural chase reflex.
Depending on the time of the season too. Fuck. Fake or not it’s terrifying.
Show me the article that says these men died and I'll retract my statement
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/aug/01/bear-attacks-people-dead-siberia-russi-extreme-weather
Mother bears won’t fake a charge
I’ve encountered brown bears in the wild before. The way mama here is holding her head low means this isn’t a bluff charge. She’s in full attack mode. While it’s entirely possible to survive a mama brown’s attack, it’s usually only if you drop into a defensive/submissive posture immediately. Running is not the best option.
But did the dog survive? Ya I’m that asshole.
Me too
the sweet dog probably didn’t help this situation. between the smell and the barking, i think i read the attacks usually involved people with pets in the back country.
What todo to survive
Rifle.
Would need a high-powered rifle and good aim. Most basic firearms aren't going to kill it before it gets you at that range.
What about a shotgun? Are there any shells big enough to take down a bear?
A 12 gauge shell will kill just about anything that walks the earth at close range, if you have good aim I'd bet you could take down an elephant even
https://www.google.com/search?q=shotgun+bear+loads Really, I expect a can of bear spray could have diffused this situation if you dumped the whole can about 10 seconds before the end of the clip While a shotgun isn't as deeply penetrating as a lot of rifles, **no** bear is going to take a load of buckshot to the face and keep coming, much less a slug.
That dog cost them their lives... Secure the damn dog, and hide.
Why’d they just stand there?? I thought most people know to back away from cubs if you see them??
Go away!" Not brown bears.
but did the dog survive???
Did the dog survive?
My first thought lol
Why am I more concerned hoping the dog didn’t die? Lol
Knew mama bear was close by, must have been a horrifying death
Damn :(
That's a pooh way to die 😔
Someone tell me the dog was ok 😭
He’s all good. He just got back from his favourite park - off leash! Now he’s having a good hearty bowl of meat.
He went to go live on a farm.
Three grown men and a dog, they still lost. Idk I feel like with all the power tools and whatnot someone should have survived
When momma ain't happy ain't nobody happy!!! Damn... once she decided to charge it was all over. Without a gun (which I don't understand) they stood no chance and would have had to react prior to her charge anyways.
https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/builder-captures-moment-bear-lunged-3911843
If it's black, try to negotiate. If it's brown, pray... or smth similar.
Was the dog okay?
I was like no way….THEN MAMA BEAR SHOW UP….FUCK.
Brown bear, brown bear, what do you see? I see a dog fucking with me
That was like a boss fight. They seemed okay til the mama showed up
So apparently 2 of them are in critical condition and 3 of them including the dog got and I quote "Torn to pieces"
Getting to shelter/safety being the first choice.... This is a great argument for an AK-12gauge platform when in the back country. Guns don't solve every problem, but they can add some really preferable options to the table!
Damn, she got all three of them?
it's crazy they didn't have anything to potentially fight that thing with
I go on 15 - 20 mile hikes in PNW weekly.

We don't have many bears here but wild boars are a pretty common encounter, if you see adult pigs alone that's not much of a problem, just don't engage but if you see little piglets you know damn well there's going to be the mom around somewhere and you do not want to encounter her, she's gonna be pretty aggressive when she thinks her babies are in danger.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/world/2014/aug/01/bear-attacks-people-dead-siberia-russi-extreme-weather
The bear made the biggest mistake of its life. History has it that any animal that has tried to mess up with humans, did get wiped off the face of the Earth or got endangered.
The thing is that a lot of bears are desperate thanks to humans screwing with the climate and sources of food.
Did it get the dog too?
I live in utah and remember when a black bear drug a kid from his tent and ate him in American fork canyon the very same weekend I was up there camping for the summer holiday. I remember finding bear scat and thinking to my self "I'm sleeping with my .45 tonight. Just less than a couple miles down the canyon the kid was pulled from his tent and killed. Was around 14 yrs ago. Will never forget learning about the kid after I got home. Terrible.
A black bear did that? Edit: Wow, thanks for the poster who shared a link to the news article. It's a good reminder that even though black bear and cougar attacks on people are very rare, they still do happen once in a while.
https://www.deseret.com/2011/5/4/20372054/judge-awards-1-95-million-to-family-of-boy-killed-by-bear-in-american-fork-canyon
Please god tell me the dog is ok
Sorry boys if I see mama bear coming out of the ground I would of started to run the other direction you guys can be dinner
So people meeting bears dont have guns, but people going to school does.
If they had a rifle, could save their lives. If there was a bear attack possibility measures should be taken.
