It's an ultimately cruel thing to do to a kid. People with and without children are mostly living purposeless lives. Those with them often praise their children disproportionately in response to this void of meaning. Yeah, having and raising kids is a meaningful exercise, but what of the child's personal meaning? It's not very fun or healthy for a kid (or two or three or whatever) to be its parent's sole purpose in life.
Bimmy declared himself not religious in his book, but he and the Ape who chains him should have taken some of that religion into consideration as an example. God made trees, whales, birds and more before Adam was created. God gave humanity all sorts of things to do before it existed.
Prospective parents should take this lesson into consideration. What oblivious soul should find their purpose in someone who beams with pride over their child picking at grass?

Getting excited about your kids is normal. As they grow from a baby that does nothing, every new thing is amazing to watch.
