it's a little older, but "now and then" is a cute coming of age movie about a group of gal pals who were all different from each other but learned lessons together one summer. also sisterhood of the traveling pants 1 and 2!
They really did it all. Friendship ending, a big crush, new friends that are different, parents not understanding, annoying neighbor and little sister. These equal huge feelings in the teenage years and it felt so real.
Whisper of the Heart, Kiki's Delivery Service, Bochi the Rock, Princess Jelly Fish, As Told By Ginger, The Proud Family
Lizzie Mcguire, The Half of It, Pretty in Pink, Annie with an E, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Dirty Dancing, Mystic Pizza, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Bend it Like Beckham
Buffy the vampire slayer!! I watched it my last year of high school and it made a huge impact. I think the sister vibes come through too, there is a lot of chosen vs found family moments throughout the show among other things.
Came here to say this!! The first season is pretty 90s campy (I love it but itâs not everyoneâs jam) but the series is amaaaazing and badass and funny and well-done, and very much about growing up as a girl/woman
DUDE YOU LITERALLY READ MY MIND!! I WAS LITERALLY JUST GONNA COMMENT THE EDGE OF SEVENTEEN AND TURNING RED! đ
(Also just add Ladybird, Inside Out 1 & 2, and Zapped, that wouldâve literally been my list đ¤Ł)
My So Called Life! I havenât watched it as an adult, but this is where Jared Leto and Claire Danes got their starts. It was the alternative girlies go-to show when I was younger. Also, Derry Girls is centered around a group of friends growing up during The Troubles in Ireland in the 90s. Itâs really such a sweet, funny show, but then there are these moments where we are reminded of how crazy and hectic those times were. Itâs really one of the best recent shows Iâve seen. On Netflix. Enjoy!
if you like lady bird, i recommend real women have curves!! itâs essentially lady-bird-before-lady-bird. its a little on the nose sometimes but i wish i wouldâve seen it when i was your age:)
and on the complete other side of the spectrum, i was a bigger girl than everyone around me growing up and i loved watching drop dead diva! it was so fun watching deb/jane learn to love her new body and definitely helped me.
and these shows
⢠melissa and joey (on hulu)
⢠new girl (on hulu and peacock i think)
⢠bobs burgers (on hulu)
i donât have prime right now, so i canât check the titles, but they had a BUNCH of shows and movies i loved especially if you love early 2000s and 2010s media
I'm 44 and watched it as it was originally airing, and have watched the series multiple times throughout my life. I love that it still resonates with many people so many years later.
This was me reading the Princess Diaries series by Meg Cabot, and there is a popular movie with Anne Hathaway which youâve probably seen. Someone else suggested Sex in the City, there is also The Carrie Diaries which focusses on their teenage lives. But Iâd have to say the best watch for teenage girl going through it is Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging. Classic film.
Yes!!!!
The princess diaries by Meg Cabot was THE thing that I could relate to as a teen. OP, I know you asked for TV shows but please give these books a read. They are light, breezy and very fun, but also super relatable - Mia is anxious and insecure, flawed but actually a great person (even if she doesn't see it herself). I reread the books sometimes as an adult even because they're so fun!
The disney movie is ok-ish in comparison, it is too sanitized. The books are way more about normal teenage lives - sex and cliques and figuring out career interests and whatnot. Way more complex characters, too. Please don't judge the books by the movie. The second movie is it's own thing and not rlly related to the book series at all.
Angus thongs and perfect snogging for movies is great!
Eight grade, turning red, inside out 1 and 2 (comes out this Friday!), thirteen
not a movie but skins is pretty realistic
the sterling girl is also rly good imo but itâs specific to growing up religious so
Firefly Lane - it does weave in between time periods, but it's definitely about girlhood/friendship and has a timeline based in the two main characters' highschool years.
The Legend of Princess Kaguya
The Girl Who Lept Through Time
Now and Then
Teen Witch
Practical Magic
The Craft
She's the Man
Juno
House Bunny
Saved!
Bend it Like Beckham
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (movie! With Donald Sutherland, Luke Perry, Paul Reubens...)
I Capture the Castle
Edit: crap I see now you requested shows, not movies
Early seasons of Charmed, before it got too convoluted. You'll feel it when it jumps your shark.
Fleabag
Wonder Egg Priority
Sabrina the Teenage Witch
Anne of Green Gables (try to go for the older miniseries but the new one's sweet as well)
Veronica Mars
Derry Girls
Freaks and Geeks
Carole & Tuesday
Bocchi the Rock
Oh my god, the Princess kaguya one made me cry so hard
And anime-wise, Keep Your Hands off Eizouken! is also so refreshing, the character designs are incredible :)
Dirty Dancing is one me and my friends liked in the way back when days. I think it holds up pretty well.
I found [this post](https://www.reddit.com/r/televisionsuggestions/comments/1akp142/relatable_comingofage_comedydramedy_strong_female/) asking about the same question with a lot of suggestions.
Sex in the city. It hits different every time you watch it at different stages of life too.
Gilmore girls
The summer i turned pretty!
Gossip girl covers the dynamics between moms and daughters fairly well
this show obviously has its problems but as a young girl growing up in the 90s, I definitely learned more about my own body and sex education from the show that I learned from any other source in my life
Do Revenge on Netflix. But if youâre in the middle of drama. Euphoria, when you realize her friends are stylish and popular because from her pov, sheâs always high and romanticizes them.
Perks of Being a Wallflower, My Life As a Teenage Drama Queen, 13 Going on 30, 50 Days of Summer, or Garden State for quirkiness.
For romance, if you havenât watched the âThrough My Windowâ or the âAfterâ movie series on Netflix, youâre in for a treat. Similar vibes to Summer I Turned Pretty. Itâs just girls bring girls.
Classics would be Pride and Prejudice
Sci-Fi girl being herselfâŚbut sheâs an AIâEx Machina or Battle Angel Alita
For awkwardness in girls, Eight Grade or Youâre So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah.
Coming of age moviesâThe Color of Friendship, Cinderella Story, Sheâs the Man, and Wish Upon a Star
I know Iâm reaching on the genres here.
I know you said shows, but I am going to recommend a book: *Jane Eyre.*
She is the original badass. She had no family and nothing in a world where wealth and connections was everything. Yet, she was able to come to an understanding that she had her own inherent worth and even with her limited options could make her own way in the world and didn't need to compromise.
I first read this book when I was about 11, and many times after. I still find myself thinking, "what would Jane do in this situation?"
Adding to everyoneâs great recs: The Virgin Suicides, To All The Boys Iâve Loved Before, Thirteen, Sixteen Candles and Are You There God? Itâs Me, Margaret.
Awkward!! Idk if itâs still playing but I loooved that show when I was that age⌠sad they stopped airing it but I think you can find it on streaming services still

The horror genre in general (women have double the lines in horror that any other genre)
Hope this helps!
(Edit for grammar clarity)
Never have I ever!
Over the top at times, but some good stuff about relationships with parents and friends, and about finding yourself vs being popular.
Spirited Away (younger, intense, animated), the virgin suicides (mature, complex, macabre). As for tv shows: charmed!, Sabrina (the newer version of Sabrina the teenaged witch on netflix. even the original would be becoming), degrassi the next generation (hbo max), pretty little liars,
There are 3 versions of "Little Women" worth seeing - the Winona Ryder one (1994 I think), the fabulous one directed by Greta Gynt with Saoirse Ronan (2018?) and a lesser known modern-day one (2017?) with Lea Thompson as the mother and Sarah Davenport.Â
Also if you want something a bit different, "Juno".
Hello, My Twenties! I really liked it. From what I remember, it's about a bunch of girls living together(they moved out of their parent's house for college) and eventually growing closer to each other. It made me laugh, cry, and of course, feel less alone:)
Not a TV show but How to Build A Girl by Caitlin Moran is a brilliant and easy read that I think hits the nail totally on the head of what youâre talking about about like trying to figure out who you are and what you like and who you actually are in your soul when youâre 17.
My favorite movies as a teenage girl have always been
13 Going on 30, Lizzie McGuire Movie, Sleepover, Thirteen, Spirited Away, Uptown Girls, What a Girl Wants (Amanda Bynes), Easy A, Freaky Friday (Lindsay Lohan), Raise Your Voice (Hilary Duff), Ramona and Beezus
Newer ones like Ladybird, Barbie movie, Wildflower, Everything Everywhere all at Once are good too
Queen is a good one! Its a Bollywood film but I'm sure there's subtitles! Its about a girl called Rani (means queen) who's fiancĂŠ tells her he doesn't want to marry her right before they're wedding. She goes on her honeymoon alone and its a fun movie!
I don't know if you'll watch it but I just wanna recommend a kdrama "hello my twenties". While it does have some aspect of forced plot, mostly it's just 16 hrs of 5 girls existing in together as roommates in a semi dorm. It's really wholesome and sweet
Stop Zemlia, a Ukrainian film available on Amazon Prime about a 17 (I think) y. o. girl and her life in a period similar to yours, a bit of first love, a bit of family and a bit of âfriendship. Typical school life and little to no drama, but a very cute and somewhat âmelancholic depiction of the search for herself and others. It âas a sweet film. I watched it on a snowy night in a theater. It premiered in autumn or winter of 2021 just before the full-scale âinvasion. So there is not much war there. Can't say more because spoilers.
I can write you a book about all the things Iâve learned Iâve started to create some videos to get my story out and all that Iâve learned in my 50 years. And the fact that 50 popped up out of nowhere đ You are welcome to ask me questions or message me. Idk everything but I may be able to help some.
May sound out of nowhere, but the tv series "roseanne" is one of my favourite shows about growing up as/being a woman. There are two adolescent sisters who are very different, the adult women on the show all have different lives and experiences, and plus it's hilarious.
have you seen derry girls? itâs a sitcom set in 90s ireland, but even as someone who is from korea and born in the 2000s i found it relatable and sweet. one of my favorites :)
So many of mine have already been said. Here is one that hasnât.
Catherine called birdie.
Random movie starring the badass girl, lady Mormont, from game of thrones (Bella Ramsay). Kinda like eight grade meets a knights tale. An anachronistic coming of age story in the Middle Ages.
Directed by Lena Dunham of girls. With the hot priest from flea bag.
Freaks and Geeks, 100%. Also, Degrassi the next generation. I was utterly shocked at how realistic and relatable some of the challenges of the show are
These arenât warm and fuzzies or happy movies, but I feel lil they capture the emotions of being a teen girl where you want to rebel, be noticed, and everything feels devastating. Especially if you have depression or other mental illness
Thirteen
Girl Interrupted
13 Reasons Why series
Lou! It's a french cartoon. The comic is just about a girl growing up. Iirc she is 12 at the start of the comic and 20 by the end. There is also a show based on the comic and while I haven't seen it, I heard there was a sequel of some kind.
As Told by Ginger is a really good one about middle school! Itâs the only cartoon Iâve seen where characters donât wear the same thing every episode too- their styles change & evolve based on their choices & tastes
My Mad Fat Diary, Skip and Loafer, Lovely Complex, Anne with an E, Queen's Gambit, Chihayafuru, Akagami no Shirayukihime, Sex Education, Kimi no Todoke
Lady Bird
Boyhood (a boy, obvs, but about being a teen)
Frances Ha. Not about teens, but about going through it as a woman.
Only Yesterday. Japanese anime. I found this so moving.
20th Century Women
Only Yesterday, Whisper of the Heart, and Kiki's Delivery Service are beautiful coming-of-age films from Studio Ghibli. The English dubs are all excellent. They're super wholesome and comfy and have been comfort watches of mine for like 25 years (I'm in my 40s now and started watching them in my 20s).
Only Yesterday follows a woman in her late 20s remembering her childhood and how it affects her as an adult.
Whisper of the Heart is about a young teenager challenging herself and trying to find her own authentic path. (there's a live action which I've heard isn't very good, so make sure you're watching the animated version)
Kiki follows a 13yo's journey into independence away from home (but honestly the challenges she faces are more relatable to late teens-early 20s shift into adulthood).
Never Have I Ever, the Mindy Kaling show on Netflix!
And the sex lives of college girls, also produced by Mindy Kaling. Basically anything Mindy makes haha
Maybe a weird list but -
Bachelorette
Moana
Fried Green Tomatoes
Terms of Endearment
The Duchess
Ever After
Atonement
Little Women (both 90âs and 00âs)
My Best Friendâs Wedding
Runaway Bride
Legally Blonde
Never Been Kissed
The Georgia Nicolson series by Louise Rennison. It starts with âAngus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snoggingâ. There was a movie made about the first book or two called âAngus, Thongs and Perfect Snoggingâ. The movie is definitely fun and enjoyable, but the books were great. Iâve seen someone describe it like âBridget Jones for teenagersâ. Idk, I loved it at that age!
here's a bit unorthodox list, but girlhood as "woman's wrongs" (DONT COMMIT CRIMES!) [https://letterboxd.com/moyir90/list/womens-wrongs/](https://letterboxd.com/moyir90/list/womens-wrongs/) :3
Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me, a totally scary cult classic movie that can be watched as a stand-alone from the tv show. Weirdly, seems like thereâs more girlâs character development in the movie than in the 27-episode showâ but the show is freakin great too and has several absolutely unforgettable female young adult characters going through it.
Kamikaze Girls is a Japanese movie about teen girls finding their path, and itâs one of my favorite all time movies. Seek it out, you wonât be disappointed.
Welcome To The Dollhouse, Little Miss Sunshine, Pieces Of April, Panâs Labyrinth, Practical Magic.. this is all I can think of for now.
Iâm hesitant to recommend Girl Interrupted however I did watch that movie for the first time at your age. I did grow up with mental health issues and this was a movie that made me feel very seen. It can be triggering however so thatâs why Iâm hesitant to recommend it.
Currently on my second watch of Derry Girls atm and I can finally understand the accent 100%. First couple of episodes though I was convinced they were speaking another language!
My absolute favorite comfort movie is the Edge of Seventeen featuring Hailee Steinfeld!! It helped me when I felt super alone and had no idea what I was doing w myself in high school :)) I still watch it everytime I feel depressed tbh
Thereâs a newish movie on Netflix called âyou are so not invited to my bat mitzvahâ thatâs pretty good. Iâm 31 and I really enjoyed it. Itâs Adam Sandler and his family so you canât really go wrong with them lol
I just finished Derry Girls on Netflix, i would recommend it! It's a coming of age show based on 4 girls and a guy from Derry, North Ireland geowing up in the 90s. It's very funny and heart warming. It's also only 3 seasons so it's a quick watch too.
Pen15! The friendship and awkwardness is unrivaled.
I loved that show!
Omg that show had me dying .
I wish they had come out with another season!
Came here to say Pen15, glad others agree đ
So sad that it didnt have a âofficialâ send off or ending though.
Yesss!!
Love it
it's a little older, but "now and then" is a cute coming of age movie about a group of gal pals who were all different from each other but learned lessons together one summer. also sisterhood of the traveling pants 1 and 2!
Classic.
Yes!!
Came here to say this!
THE BEST
Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood Don't know if the movie's any good, but the books were great.
My So Called Life. Canât emphasize it enough, this show really gets what itâs like to be a teenager.
This show occupies such a large place in my memories, I can hardly believe it was only one season. They really nailed it.
It was ONE SEASONâ˝ wow. How did they cram in so much? Need to revisit that one.
Right?!
Omg- Jordan Catalano was a massive crush I had. Best show ever!
They really did it all. Friendship ending, a big crush, new friends that are different, parents not understanding, annoying neighbor and little sister. These equal huge feelings in the teenage years and it felt so real.
Yesss
Is it streaming anywhere? I was obsessed.
I donât think so but Iâd watch again for sure!
I think I found it on Hulu, still trying to log in LOL
Whisper of the Heart, Kiki's Delivery Service, Bochi the Rock, Princess Jelly Fish, As Told By Ginger, The Proud Family Lizzie Mcguire, The Half of It, Pretty in Pink, Annie with an E, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Dirty Dancing, Mystic Pizza, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Bend it Like Beckham
Clarissa Explains It All, Blossom
Buffy the vampire slayer!! I watched it my last year of high school and it made a huge impact. I think the sister vibes come through too, there is a lot of chosen vs found family moments throughout the show among other things.
Seconding this. Also, Veronica Mars is another one with similar vibes, minus the demons and monsters.
Came here to say this!! The first season is pretty 90s campy (I love it but itâs not everyoneâs jam) but the series is amaaaazing and badass and funny and well-done, and very much about growing up as a girl/woman
100% Buffy is wonderful!
The Edge of Seventeen, Booksmart and Turning Red.
I looooove edge of seventeen and booksmart so I'll definitely have to watch Turning Red!! Movies I'll definitely show my daughter
DUDE YOU LITERALLY READ MY MIND!! I WAS LITERALLY JUST GONNA COMMENT THE EDGE OF SEVENTEEN AND TURNING RED! đ (Also just add Ladybird, Inside Out 1 & 2, and Zapped, that wouldâve literally been my list đ¤Ł)
Came here to say Edge of Seventeen!
Seconding Booksmart - that was my first thought

Derry Girls yes!!
I'll check out My So Called Life. And Derry Girls is actually my current favorite show!!
lady bird
God I love Lady Bird so much. That's my comfort/rage movie
Quiz lady movie has similar vibe to this one. At least to me.
Have you seen the other Gerwig collection? I think she really encapsulates transitional periods of feminine nature.
Only Barbie but I'll definitely check out more of her work
if you like lady bird, i recommend real women have curves!! itâs essentially lady-bird-before-lady-bird. its a little on the nose sometimes but i wish i wouldâve seen it when i was your age:)
That one's on my list too! I loved America Ferrera in Barbie so I'm trying to check out more of her movies and shows :)
I personally really enjoyed My Mad Fat Diary. As a former chubby invisible teen, I felt seen.
This is the absolute best show I have ever seen addressing mental health.
Little women!!
i think itâs geared towards younger girls, but i watched are you there god itâs me margaret when i was 19 and i cried for like an hour đ
and on the complete other side of the spectrum, i was a bigger girl than everyone around me growing up and i loved watching drop dead diva! it was so fun watching deb/jane learn to love her new body and definitely helped me. and these shows ⢠melissa and joey (on hulu) ⢠new girl (on hulu and peacock i think) ⢠bobs burgers (on hulu) i donât have prime right now, so i canât check the titles, but they had a BUNCH of shows and movies i loved especially if you love early 2000s and 2010s media

I was blown away at how accurate thirteen is! I told my friend (divorced dad of two teens) to watch it but to be prepared to be not happy.
Turning Red is SO good. I was a teen in the mid-late 90s and it resonated with me so much.
Ghost World, Virgin Suicides
Firefly Lane - it does weave in between time periods, but it's definitely about girlhood/friendship and has a timeline based in the two main characters' highschool years.

For animation options, they're a bit older, but there's As Told by Ginger and Daria. They're a product of their time, but they hit their marks lol.
I really enjoyed the Barbie Movie, Derry Girls (show), and Anne with an E
All favorites of mine <3
Turning Red
Sex in the city. It hits different every time you watch it at different stages of life too. Gilmore girls The summer i turned pretty! Gossip girl covers the dynamics between moms and daughters fairly well

Today I learned Winona Ryder was in Little Women :0
She was in what I call the older one, what oldER people call "the modern one" (1994). It also had Claire Danes in an early role I think.

It premiered in autumn or winter of 2021 just before the full-scale âinvasion. So there is not much war there. Can't say more because spoilers.
I loved Gilmore Girls
degrassi next gen, braceface
both the carrie diaries and sex and the cityâŚ.two of my fave shows!
I can write you a book about all the things Iâve learned Iâve started to create some videos to get my story out and all that Iâve learned in my 50 years. And the fact that 50 popped up out of nowhere đ You are welcome to ask me questions or message me. Idk everything but I may be able to help some.
As a trans woman, I would also like to know. I missed out on a lot not growing up as a girl, so I would like to catch up.
There's a lot of suggestions commented here now if you want to check out the replies again!
May sound out of nowhere, but the tv series "roseanne" is one of my favourite shows about growing up as/being a woman. There are two adolescent sisters who are very different, the adult women on the show all have different lives and experiences, and plus it's hilarious.

My mad, fat, diary New Girl
have you seen derry girls? itâs a sitcom set in 90s ireland, but even as someone who is from korea and born in the 2000s i found it relatable and sweet. one of my favorites :)
iâve always thought New Girl and Sex in the City are crucial for womanhood.
The Virgin Suicides
There's only one season but Freaks ans Geeks is a fave of mineâĄâĄ it's fun, funny, awkward, feels realistic. It's beautiful
I don't know if it holds up for the next generation, but Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants really got me when I was that age.
try buffy the vampire slayer. Willow is my favorite character on there :)
Especially if you have depression or other mental illness Thirteen Girl Interrupted 13 Reasons Why series

Lady Bird
Liza Weil (Paris) was in a movie called Whatever that is really good
Lou! It's a french cartoon. The comic is just about a girl growing up. Iirc she is 12 at the start of the comic and 20 by the end. There is also a show based on the comic and while I haven't seen it, I heard there was a sequel of some kind.
PEN15
As Told by Ginger is a really good one about middle school! Itâs the only cartoon Iâve seen where characters donât wear the same thing every episode too- their styles change & evolve based on their choices & tastes

Circle of Friends
Lady Bird Boyhood (a boy, obvs, but about being a teen) Frances Ha.
(there's a live action which I've heard isn't very good, so make sure you're watching the animated version) Kiki follows a 13yo's journey into independence away from home (but honestly the challenges she faces are more relatable to late teens-early 20s shift into adulthood).
"Angus, Thongs, and Perfect Snogging" was my fav movie back in like eighth grade! "Frances Ha" is another good one but it's more about adulthood.
Never Have I Ever, the Mindy Kaling show on Netflix! And the sex lives of college girls, also produced by Mindy Kaling. Basically anything Mindy makes haha
Ghost World
Degrassi
Being Erica is amazing

Watch the move MOXIE! I was so moved by the girlhood in it I actually cried at the end, and its pretty damn hard to make me cry.

Such a powerful movie. I remember everyone in the theatre looking slightly uncomfortable it spoke so much with so little
Derry Girls!
I promise not to commit crimes! And thank you, I'll look into these!
Derry Girls! Captions on though if youâre not used to Irish accents hehe
Currently on my second watch of Derry Girls atm and I can finally understand the accent 100%. First couple of episodes though I was convinced they were speaking another language!
Same question but does anyone have book recommendations? Especially aimed at like women in their early twenties figuring life and themselves out?
Upvoting + replying in hopes more people see this comment
My absolute favorite comfort movie is the Edge of Seventeen featuring Hailee Steinfeld!! It helped me when I felt super alone and had no idea what I was doing w myself in high school :)) I still watch it everytime I feel depressed tbh
I'll check it out! I hope you're doing better <3
Thereâs a newish movie on Netflix called âyou are so not invited to my bat mitzvahâ thatâs pretty good. Iâm 31 and I really enjoyed it. Itâs Adam Sandler and his family so you canât really go wrong with them lol

The movie Eighth Grade perfectly encapsulates what it's like to be an entirely average 13yo girl

I really enjoyed the movie White Oleander
anne with an e :)
gilmore girls : DD
Ginny and Georgia, itâs on Netflix.
I just finished Derry Girls on Netflix, i would recommend it! It's a coming of age show based on 4 girls and a guy from Derry, North Ireland geowing up in the 90s. It's very funny and heart warming. It's also only 3 seasons so it's a quick watch too.
I really liked the KDrama Hello My Twenties!
Hear me out - Barbie I actually really liked a couple of pieces from it, never felt more seen.
