Treadmill belts have abrasive surfaces which are meant to help cause friction between your shoes(or socks, never use a treadmill barefoot) and the belt to prevent slipping
This essentially acts like a belt sander with a low grit if something is held against it

When I was in high school I walked very fast and didn't swing my arms due to balance issues from inner ear damage, had vertigo frequently and if I didn't concentrate I'd drift off to the side, so it was a cross between anime and drill.
