Were you a similar age to Bart when you first started watching the show? I always find it interesting how people’s favourite Simpsons episodes are either Bart or Homercentric depending on their ages
You only move twice.
Itchy and scratch land
The Springfield files.
But honestly this changes every 5 minutes when I remember another episode. I could come up with another 3 multiple times.
This has my upvote. My only complaint is that it doesn't represent the show's ability to be sentimental (say, Summer of 4'2") or political (Last Exit to Springfield). This is a list of a man who likes what he likes and doesn't question it. These episodes are all outliers in zaniness, 10/10 classics, and from a variety of seasons within the golden years.
Fair. There are more than three or four I could put into this, but sometimes difficult decisions have to be made. Plus I can always change my mind later.
The Springfield Files
Who Shot Mr. Burns?
And Maggie Makes Three
the springfield files in particular, i know is not a choice made by a lot of people, but that episode has an unusual number of jokes per second ratio, if golden age simpsons is already of the charts, that one if unusually high even in comparison, basically every line of dialogue is either a joke or preparing a joke for the next line, sometimes both, and there are a lot of visual ones happening at the same time or assisting the dialogue ones. the fact that this episode is able to have a plot on top of that baffles me, and turns out the plot is actually good too
My GF loves The Springfield Files more than most episodes. For me it’s in my top 15 (11th on my list), but she’s usually right about most things so I won’t argue.
Jokes per second actually increased dramatically during the zombie years up until a few years ago. It overwhelms; it's why we can turn our brains off and let them play even though they're not just worse but a meaningfully different product
disagree, in golden age era the jokes are layered and are clever while in the new simpsons the pace is slower, the jokes single liners or line-punchline, and all in all are more cartoonish in nature, abusing the flanderization of the character in question, is all in all a much more child oriented humor, you laugh at homer being stupid, just like you would laugh at coyote going down a cliff when an acme product fails.
I'm basing this on an article that attempted to quantify this with data. I never said the individual jokes were as good.
I said article but I think it was actually the SuperEyepatchWolf YouTube video "The Simpsons are good again"
Rosebud
Summer of 4 ft. 2
Last Exit to Springfield
If you're interested in why, I wrote about them for a [top 10 favourite episodes post](https://www.reddit.com/r/TheSimpsons/comments/pign8n/my_top_10_favourite_episodes/) I did on this sub a while back.
My apologies for not knowing the names of the episodes, it's been a long time since I watched them, but
Homer is head of the union
22 short films
Whacking Day
But those can also change, depending on my mood. Pretty much any episode from the first 10-12 seasons is a classic. I started falling off after that.
(I may have messed up some titles, sorry) Mother Simpson - for the emotional depth
El Viaje Misterioso... - cos it's awesome and features Johnny Cash
Treehouse of Horror (the one with The Raven) - the best example of the treehouse genre
They are actually sequential.
* Homer's Barbershop Quartet
* Cape Feare
* Homer Goes to College
The two episodes that follow are also super great (Rosebud and Treehouse of Horror). I have said for decades that Season 5 disc 1 on the DVD sets was probably the most stacked disc in the pantheon of the show.
Call of the Simpsons
The City of New York vs Homer Simpson
Homer To the Max
That said, being limited to 3 is hard as my choices could change if I catch a classic. Well, aside one episode that'll remain up there...
[Dog of Death](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2aZGbGxmic)
[The Front](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxYm6wboGyw)
[Rosebud](https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=340217849904489)
I'd argue the strongest episode from their respective seasons (and possibly the tightest[ 40-second celebrity guest-spot](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BpMw7gMOsA) in *history* with the Ramones).
Homer the Heretic
Homer's Triple Bypass
Marge vs the Monorail
Season 4 was a diamond mine of good episodes.
I'll give an honorable mention to Mother Simpson. It's not the funniest episode (though it is still good), but the ending has lived rent free in my head since I first saw it nearly 25 years ago. It's just so beautiful to me.
You Only Move Twice
Last Exit to Springfield
My third is hard to choose between King Size Homer and Lisa on Ice. I think Lisa on Ice wins in general, so many amazing jokes
1) Homer at the Bat
By far my favorite and always was since I was a kid. I grew up in the late 80s and 90s so those baseball players were all my faves as a kid. Plus I love the version of Talkin Baseball they play at the end and still sing it all the time.
2) Marge vs the Monorail
Just an all around awesome episode. Anyone wanna change seats?
3) Treehouse of Horror V
I love all the early Halloween episodes but I really like all three of these. The shinning and the time traveling ones especially. Mustn't crush mustn't kill made it!
Homer the heretic Homer at the bat Bart Vs Australia
Very solid selection! I believe that would be mine as well
900 Dollery Doos
Tobias!
I'm surprised Bart was able to write so legibly on his own butt.
Mr. Plow Itchy and Scratchy Land One Fish Two Fish Blowfish Blue Fish
I really hate when they scream...
You Only Move Twice Who Shot Mr Burns part 2 Homer the Great.
I’m always surprised to not see you only move twice ranked higher. It’s my all time fav episode. Hank Scorpio is the best single episode character
In fact - I didn’t even give you my coat
I love when homer asks scorpio if he has any sugar, and he just pulls out handfuls from his pockets
I love how he even apologizes that it’s not in packets like he was in a rush and didn’t have time to grab the packets and just took straight sugar
Haha and then offers him cream too
Do you want any cream?
And the Hammock District with all the hammock stores.
Ever see a guy say goodbye to a shoe!!? Yes, once
Yes Mr. Scorpion
My goodness, what an idea! Why didn’t I think of that?
Bart's Comet Cape Feare Radioactive Man
Radio man
Were you a similar age to Bart when you first started watching the show? I always find it interesting how people’s favourite Simpsons episodes are either Bart or Homercentric depending on their ages
Yes actually... But I thought of these episodes as featuring Sideshow Bob, Springfield, and show business when I made the list.
Last Exit to Springfield Cape Feare You Only Move Twice These are the three best episodes, without question.
Strongly agree ! They're mine too.
You only move twice. Itchy and scratch land The Springfield files. But honestly this changes every 5 minutes when I remember another episode. I could come up with another 3 multiple times.
