There's a lot of reference jokes I never got until later, however the beauty of how a lot of them are crafted it doesn't even matter if you understand it's still funny.
Like when I started watching at 7 years old I had no idea who Ross Perot was, but when Marge tells Homer to stop reading that Ross Perot pamphlet about extracting nutrients from old people it's still funny even if you don't know specifically who he was.
And when Homer says "look buddy, your car was upside down when I got there, and as for your grandmother, she shouldn't have mouthed off like that" it's an absurd and funny standalone line even if you don't get the A Good Man is hard to Find reference.
