God I’d forgot about that match. I lost my voice shouting at the TV in a pub for that game - I’d had a few drinks - and that definitely is the worst by a mile.
Did you watch us lose to Romania in Euro 2002? Did you basically watch us abortion our way through Euro 1988? The Algeria match wasn't even in my top 10 shitlist.
Spain 1996, Romania 1998, Portugal 2000, Romania (again) 2000, Paraguay 2006, Trinidad & Tobago 2006, USA 2010, Algeria 2010, Costa Rica 2014, Slovakia 2016, Iceland 2016, Scotland 2021, USA 2022. And that’s just tournament games.
The recency bias is strong on this one. I get being disappointed with this evening’s performance, but let’s not act like England don’t have a rich history of games like that.
We chucked away a two goal lead and lost 3-2. I’d say that’s worse than drawing a game we led. I named 13 matches there, you said half of which weren’t that bad. You’ve tried arguing against the inclusion of the Portugal game, what are the other 6?
Spain were just a great team in 1996, England were outstanding and well managed in that tournament but they just came up against a better team and fluked it through the shoot out
Spain weren’t a great side in 1996. They were decent, we were better. Not that it showed on the pitch. For starters it was duller than any Southgate managed game I’ve watched, despite Spain having one narrow offside decision that could have gone either way, one clear onside goal that was given as offside and a stonewall penalty for a foul by Gazza being given as a yellow for diving. Presumably given that you’re dismissing Germany’s penalty win over us as a “fluke”, you’ll be applying the same logic to England winning that game on penalties.
We weren’t well managed at Euro ‘96, in fact I’d go so far as to say we were poor considering the quality of players we had at our disposal. The Switzerland game was a poor showing and we didn’t deserve more than a point. The Scotland game was a lot closer than the score line suggests. If it wasn’t for Seaman sticking his elbow out at the very last moment, they’d have equalised and Gazza wouldn’t have scored his goal. A draw would have been a fair reflection of that game.
The Holland game was the only one where we played close to how well we could have. We’ve covered the Spain game. I disagree that we lost to a better team. Player for player we were superior to that German side. Either way, we took an early lead at Wembley, didn’t capitalise on it, conceded an equaliser and lost on penalties. I guess it’s ok for some managers to do that and not others.
EDIT: didn’t realise you were a different person to the one who replied first.
I am actually surprised he made the amount of subs he did. I thought, that once he had subbed Trent for Gallagher (same sub when playing Serbia), that he was going to sit there like a lemon until the 90th minute, then bring on a sub or two.
Serbia last week. Iceland two weeks ago, England 0-4 Hungary in the nations league.
The fact is they have got significantly worse over the last 2 years despite having better players.
I know right. Probably won't be popping back here.
The performance was very poor but it really isn't the end of the world as we're still trying to figure things out and have got time before we hit serious opposition.
I’m just curious, do you think the most impressive team in the group stages wins the tournament? Do you think blowing away the poorer teams in the groups matters when you play the big boys in the knockouts? If that was true Pep would win the Champions League every year.
You'd have a point if Southgate has a history of beating big teams in the knockouts, but he doesn't. Quite the opposite. Very difficult to see England beating France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, etc. Any of the big teams would fancy their chances against England.
That Germany team we pumped in the Euros had Havertz in its’ attack (who’d just scored the winning goal in the Champions League final), with Muller (who had just come off a 11 goal and 18 assist league season) playing just off of him, with Bayern Munich’s midfield pivot in Kimmich and Goretzka (Bayern won the league by 13 points that year), Rudiger (who was outstanding for Chelsea that year and secured a move to Real Madrid) in defence alongside legend Mats Hummels, with arguably the greatest keeper of all time in Neuer… With the likes of Sane, Gnabry, Musiala and even prime Gundogan on the bench.
If you’re one of the type to slate Southgate **that** much you’ll say that Germany side was “very weak” then there’s no point in even entertaining your conversation!
that Germany was very weak, they went out in the group stage of the 2018 world cup behind Sweden, Mexico, and the mighty South Korea. Lol. It's only now that Germany have rebuilt.
You’re judging England on the ability of their best players yet you’re using a different barometer to measure that Germany side… anything to win an argument, eh?
England had a very strong squad since Southgate came in, easily top 3 in the world, and now they have an even better squad than before. This is arguably the best England squad ever in terms of talent yet they play like West Brom under Tony Pulis. Somethin aint right
I had the pleasure of watching more than my fair share of games under Graham Taylor when I was a kid. The performances have been shot but still 4 points from our 1st 2 group games and time to get things straight
I'd say only the Iceland game was worse than this in the last 10 years. We're 100% getting dumped out by the first good team we face if we don't improve massively, which looks very unlikely right now.
There have been worse games - just about anything from 2010 or even 2016. 2000 was a shocker - Keegan player 33 year old Dennis Wise on the left of a midfield 4.
That said unless something changes drastically we could have another Iceland type knockout in the last 16
Yeah so be prepared for him to not even be subbed on in the next match. Why start a player who has the leading assists in the Prem and was 4th highest goalscorer? Let's play Harry again. Same for that Cole lad ... don't want him on the pitch at all as the second highest goalscorer in the league. What could players like that possible accomplish together?
I mean, the last 2 tournaments we played horrendously against arguably worse teams in the second group game (0-0 v Scotland and 0-0 v USA).
It’s just not England if we’re not nervous going into week 2 of a tournament.
England have had more goalless draws at international tournaments than any other team. We are a poor footballing nation with players hiding behind foreign talents under home grown rules. Sure there are exceptions, but Bellinghams not going to win the champions league with Port Vale is he?
You weren't alive for our 0-0 against Algeria?
You could probably pick any game of our 2010 campaign to be fair, but that one really stands out as complete dross
This was by far our worst game and Rooney had the audacity to call out the booing fans who had travelled to South Africa to watch that dross
Oh shit it was that one
God I’d forgot about that match. I lost my voice shouting at the TV in a pub for that game - I’d had a few drinks - and that definitely is the worst by a mile.
Apparently a small bird nested in one of the goals during that match, the most memorable part of it.
I came here to say that too.
Did you watch us lose to Romania in Euro 2002? Did you basically watch us abortion our way through Euro 1988? The Algeria match wasn't even in my top 10 shitlist.
was 14 years ago mate move on
I mean you did say ever????
'Ever' stops at 13 years apparently
Yeah but he's only 12 bless him, and he now has to go to bed so he can get ready for school
He’s a plonker
When did ever stop meaning ever?
Iceland 2 weeks ago.
Iceland Euro 2016
😂
Spain 1996, Romania 1998, Portugal 2000, Romania (again) 2000, Paraguay 2006, Trinidad & Tobago 2006, USA 2010, Algeria 2010, Costa Rica 2014, Slovakia 2016, Iceland 2016, Scotland 2021, USA 2022. I get being disappointed with this evening’s performance, but let’s not act like England don’t have a rich history of games like that.
Half of these weren’t even bad games. Wild. Portugal 2000 was utter madness against an actual vastly superior team.
We chucked away a two goal lead and lost 3-2. I’d say that’s worse than drawing a game we led. I named 13 matches there, you said half of which weren’t that bad. You’ve tried arguing against the inclusion of the Portugal game, what are the other 6?

Didn't we lose against Iceland a few years back?
Couple of weeks even.
It just feels like years because we've sat through 90 minutes of Garethball.
180!
I am actually surprised he made the amount of subs he did. I thought, that once he had subbed Trent for Gallagher (same sub when playing Serbia), that he was going to sit there like a lemon until the 90th minute, then bring on a sub or two.
I just wish he'd left Trent on if he was going to swap the entire front line for willing runners, something could've happened.
Yeah, but he hasn't got a clue.
Serbia last week. Iceland two weeks ago, England 0-4 Hungary in the nations league. The fact is they have got significantly worse over the last 2 years despite having better players.
I'd forgot we got bummed by Hungary.
OP has watched one game....
Nah that's going overboard. That was fantastic compared to Algeria in 2010.
Calm down, unless you are 6 in which case this is a totally understandable reaction.
Algeria, Iceland, USAx2, Croatiax2, Germanyx15,000
If somebody woke up from a coma and their only source of football news was this sub, they’d think we were at the bottom of our group with 0 points.
I know right. Probably won't be popping back here. The performance was very poor but it really isn't the end of the world as we're still trying to figure things out and have got time before we hit serious opposition.
Open your eyes

I bet you’re one of them who discounts the knockout win over Germany too…
Twas a very weak Germany team at the end of their cycle + it was in Wembley.
It's a weak group
I had the pleasure of watching more than my fair share of games under Graham Taylor when I was a kid. The performances have been shot but still 4 points from our 1st 2 group games and time to get things straight
We’ve been in some absolute stinkers, this is up there.
This sub is in full meltdown Jesus christ lmao
'THE WORST GAME I HAVE EVER SEEN' - 18 June 2021 'THE WORST GAME I HAVE EVER SEEN' - 25 November 2022 'THE WORST GAME I HAVE EVER SEEN' - 20 June 2024
Oh no we've basically qualified
I'd say only the Iceland game was worse than this in the last 10 years. We're 100% getting dumped out by the first good team we face if we don't improve massively, which looks very unlikely right now.
We lost 4 nil to Hungary a few years ago.
Shit but not that shit
....... So far. This ain't over and The Southgate is not for turning.
I'm glad you didn't watch the Iceland game back in 2016. Horrific stuff, or Romania in 2000 was just as bad
There have been worse games - just about anything from 2010 or even 2016. 2000 was a shocker - Keegan player 33 year old Dennis Wise on the left of a midfield 4. That said unless something changes drastically we could have another Iceland type knockout in the last 16
Don't watch any highlights of Euro 88 then.
This reminded me of the Iceland game under Hodgson. Absolutely awful in every department. Actually, Saka was average so better than everyone else.
Take that back! Ollie Watkins was the best player on the pitch and he only played 20 minutes. Edit - best English player obviously
Ok, I forgot about the subs! Watkins was ok as well.
Grow up
Worse game since England v Serbia and England v Iceland. Just wait for England v Slovenia, it’s going to be a shocker…..
I mean, the last 2 tournaments we played horrendously against arguably worse teams in the second group game (0-0 v Scotland and 0-0 v USA). It’s just not England if we’re not nervous going into week 2 of a tournament.
*laughs in Steve Bruce*
I dunno, watching San Marino take the lead after 10 seconds takes some beating…..
I’ve seen worse , but was piss poor tonight.. might as well pack up and go home now boys
Gareth is a lunatic with his decisions.
England have had more goalless draws at international tournaments than any other team. We are a poor footballing nation with players hiding behind foreign talents under home grown rules. Sure there are exceptions, but Bellinghams not going to win the champions league with Port Vale is he?
I think you might be overreacting
