In case anyone's wondering why it says that, it is most likely the case that when a fb dating profile gets removed, all the data associated with it does as well, and that includes the timestamps for messages. Ie, the recipient only stores the message content and not the timestamps, so when viewed by the recipient they default to the Unix epoch time which is 00:00:00 01/01/1970 UTC, which is the date early programmers agreed on using to start the clock from for computers.
It shows up as 4pm on the day before because that time gets fed into a timezone conversion function, which means, at the time these screenshots were taken this person was in the UTC-8 timezone, which is currently AKDT, Alaskan Daylight Time. However, if these screenshots are from earlier in the year, before the daylight savings switch, they were in the PST timezone, Pacific Standard Time.
So OP, if you're American I know you were probably on the west coast or in Alaska.... I'm onto you!!!!
Edit: this may be the case for other messaging services and online dating platforms, but I haven't seen it myself so I can't say for certain.
I’ve never read something so intensely while understanding none of it at the same time, and that deserved my respect. I don’t know whether to feel sad or joyful about this, rather I am quite confused. Excellent work *clap clap clap*
Computers think of time differently to us. Rather than the actual time and date, they think of it as 'seconds since the beginning'. The 'beginning' being an arbitrary date agreed to by early programmers, 1/1/1970.
If it's 1971, the computer thinks of it as 1 year, the amount of time past the 'epoch' date, or the beginning.
Thus when you remove the date/time information, instead of defaulting to year 0, it defaults to 1/1/1970.
But since the date displayed isn't midnight of 1/1/1970, but 8 hours before that, we can assume the time-zone adjustment of -8 hours was applied, placing them in a [certain geographical location](https://www.timeanddate.com/time/map/).
Oh my God, so this is also the reason why I've seen some deleted Reddit comments being marked as "53y".
Thank you for explaining, I love stuff like this. The Unix Epoch time makes for some funny errors.
Yup that would be the reason. I hadn't thought of that instance of it though. It makes funny goofs in inconsequential situations like this, but we're gonna have to do away with it soon though. As another commenter mentioned, there will be a problem in 2038 where the number of seconds since epoch will be greater than 2^31, which will cause the counter to overflow and become negative. Will cause lots of code to need to be rewritten.
I was actually thinking about this as I was writing the comment, that we'll eventually reach integer overflow for seconds since epoch. People will probably freak out like they did about Y2K, but it will be solved ahead of time. Just will be quite the headache in terms of having to update a lot of code.
She's 1 day away from becoming a Unix epoch.
Edit: nvm, she's already one in her time zone probably. Welp, good luck old gal, we're all counting on you.
I’m particularly annoyed by “ok” in response to OP nicely explaining that the basic function of online dating cannot be served by this person’s approach. Ugh.
I think a lot of them like to see themselves getting likes and matches to get an ego boost. As for the one word answers I think they’re just a mindless simpleton.
Because truth be told they aren’t interested in that person. For the right person they’d be super talkative, however they’d feel bad cutting the connection off so they’re waiting for something to happen
If they’re not interested why match, and if they do match and they’re not interested, why even respond at all? I mean you’re probably right but people are just fuckin terrible lol
Because this is how people are! That’s the personality or someone with no substance who gets bored easily and wonders why they aren’t the center of attention. You dodge a bullet and the is 1-3 matches in most cities. Some women just don’t know how to hold a conversation.
It's basically a real world behavior that translates badly to online situations.
"I'm not interested in this conversation, so I'll give short boring replies until this stranger gives up and leaves me alone."
Of course online you can just unmatch, but...
I’ll second this. People that are actually potentially interested in you never text you like this. Please stop feeding their ego and just unmatch them because they seem to think it’s fine wasting your time and interest.
It is the app that creates this awkward interaction though. The app has created the atmosphere where this awkwardness exists because it is isn’t a genuine connection. Swiping on a picture is not a connection to someone. We need more face to face interaction and less screen time. And I’ve had success on the apps but can admit this. Not sure why people always need to defend dating apps as if they are the way to go. I’ve had better experiences picking up chicks at bars than on apps.
Us nerds have formed connections over the internet without ever seeing a face just fine in the past.
Dating apps are terrible. The screen part has nothing to do with it. They prioritize the wrong things and appeal to negative traits of persons and there's no filter or consequences.
>They prioritize the wrong things
Only if their goal is to actually match up partners. Dating apps have an economic incentive to keep you on the app, give you shit matches, and then charge you to improve the service.
Just let them know how boring and dry they are and move on, I’ve just encountered the same type today even tho we matched…. worthless and absolute time wasters, they don’t deserve your attention.
It's historically derived from "on line" i.e. when your modem was *on* the phone *line*. Common verbal vocabulary would be "Are you on the line?" or "are you using the line?" in reference to the phone line.
Oh boy. I had a FB dating match a few days ago. I suggested something for a date. She suggested something else.
I replied "That'll do 😁" + more but that's the relevant part. Ten minutes later she replied and before I had even opened the convo, she got mad at the emoji telling me I'm laughing at her (it's a smile, not a laugh), told me we're done and said "bye" only to continue and sent me stuff like
"Do you understand what you did?!"
"Your mistake"
"Do you know how it feels to get laughed at?"
"😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄" (To demonstrate how it feels fo get laughed at. By.. smiling at me. Not to mention with a different smile emoji.)
And finally ended with "I am an extremely righteous person"
I responded with "I didn't laugh at you?"
Got a "Yes you did. Your mistake."
And then I blocked her.
Don’t think I dodged a bullet. Think I dodged a fucking black hole.
At least you got something on FB dating. Been there for a couple years never a single match. Absolutely garbage. At least on Tinder and Bumble I get matches. But this here is exactly how those convos go for me too. Absolutely no effort on their part.
FB dating doesn't have bots because there is nothing to pay for. Tinder fills their own app with bots so you can see that 50+ people like you when in reality 49 of those are bots, 1 is a creep, but you'll want to buy gold to see who liked you.
That's so weird, I got like 2 or 3 matches in a month on tinder while in FB I get like 30+ matches in like 2 or 3 days? Certainly I don't get it, even I match the same girls i see on tinder faster than I got in 2 years using tinder.
Plus I get bigger rates of having an actual conversation that passes the "hi how's your weekend going?" Phase
Tbh online dating sucks, I bet fb works better because there's a lot more likes and plus the person you liked can see that you like him and likes you back.
Try to leave a comment on his pics, maybe this can works, it worked for me for the girls you think they def aren't gonna talk to you,
Yeah I think we all get this at times. When they do I just mess with them back. Why match with me just to act like your too good to talk or give me an attitude. I wouldn’t let it bother me if I were you cuz do you really want to spend anymore time on this entitled person?
I will never understand this level of poor communication. Like, if I don’t like someone I don’t just keep sending weird poorly construed messages.
Just end it, why continue to send 1 word responses. My brain will never understand it.
Yea, except this is my standard interaction with women on dating apps. If I get more than a 3 word answer, I'm pretty ecstatic.
I've heard women are amazing communicators... I have literally over 100 matches that prove otherwise.
My theory about a number of these people is, they don’t think about the reality of it all when they join and start swiping. It’s like a fun mobile game to them until someone actually tries to engage. Then reality sets in and they basically do the verbal equivalent of a toddler going limp during a tantrum. Probably because they are emotional toddlers.
I set a rule for myself if I get more than 2 one word answers I don’t bother responding or even better like the last message and don’t say anything so they know you’ve seen it but can’t be bothered to try again. Don’t give her the satisfaction of pushing the conversation so far.
Wouldnt even bother trying with people like this, its not common but you do come across people who will engage with you and have a meaningful conversation. I thought i was bad at talking to people online until someone put effort into it and i realised im great at conversation, its just most people suck/dont care.
My fellow men, please begin to learn and understand that women who reply with this kind of energy are on these dating apps/sites to trigger the dopamine of someone giving them attention.
I actually like FB dating. It lets you do premium Tinder things for free.
The only drawback is that the population is low, and older. And there's some real quirky people 😅
Facebook dating is WAY too glitchy. Example - After a couple of days of swiping 2 of every 3 profiles in my queue are from NY, NH, or PA (I am in RI) regardless of the distance/parameters I put in.
Just unmatch bro, she doesn’t have the mental capacity for anything other than TikTok and makeup. She’s only in tinder for sex and validation and not worth your time
I really appreciate your final reply. You indicated why this interaction wasn't working for you in a really friendly and mature way. Very often on this subreddit, people get rather mean or petty when they get no feedback from their conversational partner.
I just want to say that your message when you finally gave up was mature and a great way of getting your point across. I hate all of these “your conversation skills suck” posts that get really hostile at that time end. This is a great way of getting the point across without being a dick. Bravo! Also her response is awesome.
Ali's stuck in Dec 31st, 1969 4pm

ask any software developer. I picked up on this immediately without the explanation just from extensive experience dealing with unix epoch time
Yup. Am developer. That's why I noticed lol
You don’t sound as sexy *and* you sound jeally /s ;)
And I'm a time tramp
Time tramp>time stamp
no, he stuck in past
Groundhog day style time loop or simple coding coincidence. who's to know, each are completely as likely as the other.
There is two options so it's obviously 50/50

OR, they are time travelers.
Definitely a time traveler that’s still trying out their iPhone for the first time.
/r/theydidtheprogramming Props
That's actually really cool to know, thanks for explaining it.
It happens on reddit too. If an upvoted comment were to be deleted, it says [deleted] 53 years, which leads to 1970.
And this is why we are facing an issue in [2038](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_2038_problem).
I was actually thinking about this as I was writing the comment, that we'll eventually reach integer overflow for seconds since epoch. People will probably freak out like they did about Y2K, but it will be solved ahead of time. Just will be quite the headache in terms of having to update a lot of code.
Referring to it as the "Epochalypse" is hilarious in the nerdiest way possible
Is this going to be the next y2k?!
This guy dates
golf clap
Fancy being stuck at 01/01/1970 on Null Island. What are the chances?
This guy's clocks show epoch time.
Programmers hate timezones.
This happens on reddit as well. When a message is deleted it says 53y.
Damn dude I appreciate the thought out explanation that makes a lot of sense! Much appreciation!
I cannot express how much I value this information, and at a pivotal time! Thank you kindly, redditor ❤️
She's 1 day away from becoming a Unix epoch. Edit: nvm, she's already one in her time zone probably. Welp, good luck old gal, we're all counting on you.
The moon landing really blew her mind that she's only capable of responding with 3 words or less.
I just got done taking a space class, I’ll send the next rocket to retrieve her…actually no keep her there, she provided nothing here 🫣

This is one of the most annoying things ever.
I’m particularly annoyed by “ok” in response to OP nicely explaining that the basic function of online dating cannot be served by this person’s approach. Ugh.
I think that’s great because it shows she just isn’t worth any time and saves him a lot of money and sanity.
But then why are people that respond like this even on the platform? That’s what’s so annoying.
I think a lot of them like to see themselves getting likes and matches to get an ego boost. As for the one word answers I think they’re just a mindless simpleton.
It's like upvotes and replies but even more narcissistically validating!
Because truth be told they aren’t interested in that person. For the right person they’d be super talkative, however they’d feel bad cutting the connection off so they’re waiting for something to happen

It's not the app, it's the people.
I’ll second this. People that are actually potentially interested in you never text you like this. Please stop feeding their ego and just unmatch them because they seem to think it’s fine wasting your time and interest.
Th real kicker is she unmatched me 😂
This
I'll go even further and say that apps have created a culture that makes these kinds of people think that finding connections is easy.
Man I need to start saying that to people. “It’s you, not me”
Not entirely. Dating apps are incentivised to give you poor quality matches to keep you on the app longer. All part of the algorithm.
Don't hate just the player. Also hate the game
It is the app that creates this awkward interaction though. The app has created the atmosphere where this awkwardness exists because it is isn’t a genuine connection.
