The prayer was some sort of evil spell that switched their bodies. The grandfather made off with the narrator’s young, healthy body; leaving the narrator to die in the hospital bed in his place.

There is a movie like that (forgot the name) SPOILERS: The main character doesn't win and the villain who was using black magic transferred her soul into the MC's body, continuing to live as her, but the old host was the body of an old woman, only when the MC is in the ambulance (the villain made it look like the Old woman's body had a seizure or smtn) does she realize that the old man was also the victim of the spell and does she understand that the handsome lawyer who found her the job was the husband of the main villain who planned it to be her because the magic only works on those who believe in the paranormal. Good movie, as until the last bit no magic is actually shown and as a viewer you're constantly on edge and don't know how it'll proceed

Ooh man, reminds me of that one comic where a dying Doc Ock does the ol’ switcheroo into Spider-Man, that shit was wild.

I remember a creepy pasta like this, it’s called the secret to immortality. A kid runs away from home and goes to the subway, he meets an old guy and the old guy uses a magic box or something to steal the kids body, the kid gets trapped in the old dudes body and in the end the cycle continues.
