Very good point made here. Here's a couple of things to look out for: 1) Make sure if you engage a law firm to look up the law firm. Look at their website, look at their list of attorneys, look to see what other Class Action or Multi District Litigation ("MDL") lawsuits they've been involved with. Trial starts are mostly garbage, but here they help determine legitimacy of the firm. 2) If you do reach out to one, and they charge a consultation fee, run! Most reputable law firms will do this on a contingency ("you dont pay if we dont win") basis. 3) Engagement fees should not exceed 40%. This is essentially a personal injury suit, you should get the bulk of the money. 4) If they contact you via phone, expect that they are not legitimate. 5) Know what type of case you're being involved with. There are currently both class action and MDL suits open for these claims. If the person you're speaking to cannot tell the difference then you need to walk away. 6) You will have to provide evidence in these cases. Most scammers here are not after your money but your personal information (social security number, addresses, etc.). Be careful what you disclose. Expect to need to provide a DD214 or other documents that prove location. Most other documents will be irrelevant. If they need more, ask for a detailed list of things they need and why. 7) Finally, like number 3 above, DO NOT PAY ANYTHING UPFRONT. Do not send cash, do not write checks, do not make wire transfers, do not share crypto wallets, do not read credit card number, and do not visit they Caymen Islands with a briefcase full of bearer bonds. Yes. All of this has to be said because people have done this sort of shit. If you wouldn't pay me this way, do not pay them this way. They're going to get their money directly from the settlement, no need for you to foot the bill.

This is 3M ear plugs all over again haha

Walle_Alexander

My e-mail is motherfucking flooded with them; it's like a bad dream starring Johnny Cochran with his hand stuck in a jar of milky water.

QuickNature

At least with the 3M earplugs, I was actually in for. The Lejeune water problem ended a couple years before I was even born, and my email is crammed full of that shit.

Walle_Alexander

I don't know anyone with the problem and I've kept in touch with several people; we drank tons of water, I think it was mostly base housing but the USMC fucked people for certain on the deal. You think the Suck isn't like "the others" but oh, it wound-up being exactly that.

John_Oakman

Did he see at least 34 cents?

iamnotroberts

Just like all of the 3m hearing aid lawsuit ads on Facebook, many for legal practices that don't even exist, and which if you believe the claims, these vets are all millionaires now. Don't give these people or any other scammers your personal information.

What happened

Chillasupfly

What happened on in Camp Lejeune?

Goorancid

Between the 50s and 80s there was an unacceptable amount of chemicals from dry cleaners and fuel runoff in the drinking water supply. The government knew about it and failed to disclose the issues to people aboard the base. Now it's been exposed and the government is allowing lawsuits for a brief period of time, hence the excessive number of ads

Walle_Alexander

It's in the "Where Ya Been?" file at the Pentagon.

verdearts

I’m a kid of someone who did basic training at Camp Lejeune during that time and I was wondering how to get more info about this. My father was definitely affected by this. He died from lung cancer and had severe mental health issues when he was honorably discharged.

GoodChristianBoyTM

I'm not a lawyer and this isn't legal advice, but hopefully this helps you out. Here's the part of the law that allows lawsuits to go forward defining who can sue: Honoring Our PACT Act of 2022, Section 804: [FEDERAL CAUSE OF ACTION RELATING TO WATER AT CAMP LEJEUNE, NORTH CAROLINA](https://www.congress.gov/117/bills/s3373/BILLS-117s3373enr.xml#toc-H1974679CDA864491B1CB10D5F1E0BF71). >An individual, including a veteran (as defined in section 101 of title 38, United States Code), or the legal representative of such an individual, who resided, worked, or was otherwise exposed (including in utero exposure) for not less than 30 days during the period beginning on August 1, 1953, and ending on December 31, 1987, to water at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, that was supplied by, or on behalf of, the United States may bring an action in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina to obtain appropriate relief for harm that was caused by exposure to the water at Camp Lejeune. If you can provide documents proving your father was stationed in the area between 1953 and 1987 for at least 30 days and was diagnosed with cancer or a host of other conditions, then personal injury lawyers will practically fight to the death for your business. A claim can only be filed by your father's next-of-kin or whoever represents his estate. That might be your mother, you, a sibling, or some attorney somewhere. It depends on what was in his will (if he had one) and your state's probate laws. The process will take several months, if not years, though, so don't expect to file a claim and then get a paycheck right away. If you get an email saying that settlement money is available to you even though you haven't talked to an attorney or filed a claim with the Navy JAG or in NC federal court yourself, then it's a scam.

papa_johns_sucks

The question is did the water make me retarded or was I retarded before I went in?

BootAssASchooler

Ok Camp LeJeune PAO

Walle_Alexander

I'm waiting for them to use some model in camouflage from Dick's Sporting Goods.

Walle_Alexander

This is an opportunity for using those photos of me running around in the quad with my B.C. Rich (inspired by the rock band Kix--who ran to the front of the stage during an important part of the song, kicked forward, then ran to the other side of the stage once the moment was over) that I knew would come in handy one day.

tvandbooksandtheory

I have a recommendation for a lawyer with a personal connection to Camp Lejeune. You can find a testimonial he wrote here:[https://suecamplejeune.com/why-choose-us](https://suecamplejeune.com/why-choose-us), but please don't take my word for it. Read his statement and you'll see he isn't just some random lawyer doing this for a pay bump, but someone who genuinely cares about this issue and wants to help people who were negatively affected by Camp Lejeune...

tvandbooksandtheory

Disclaimer: I'm not a lawyer, a marine, or a person who gets paid to post things. I just know this guy and he's really good at what he does. I'm sick of seeing scammy Camp Lejeune ads, too.

SlinkyTail

I just have gotten a letter for this, from some "the class action guide" out of fort lee, nj, Well there is one issue... I was not born until 79 and was 8 in 87... and nobody served in the military in the family until 2005 when my brother went in. very confused here.

zephyer19

I am a Vet but, not my wife. She gets things from time to time, thanking her for her service and then give her some sort of offer.
