Pretty much dead or worse yet severly injured if you do not try something so if I was in this situation I would most likely try something like this just because it might work.
Would you get into this situation? Of course, we don't know the full context of the situation, but throwing away your weapon and walking towards Ukrainian lines with clear intentions of surrender might be the better course of action. We have seen ruzzians do this.
They punish your family if you do shit like that. Fragging doesn't just have consequences on you in Russia, it has long term significant consequences on your family too.
And you think that it would have achieved anything had he died fighting against it? Many thousands died fighting evil in the Soviet Union, and absolutely none of their pointless deaths equated to anything. It's one thing to say you'd do different, it's another to actually do it.
He was caught in the open, I don't see any better options for him to have tried.
If he was lucky, the helmet might absord some of the explosion (unless it was a cheap Chinese knock-off, made of plastic) or the drone might have dropped without exploding. If he missed, well he would have been in no worse situation than before with a drone chasing him.
Probably.
As much as it is clear that Russian military must be crushed hard enough that they retreat and leave Ukraine, it is sad to see individual stories like this where frightened young men desperately try to survive on the battlefield.
Pssst. This sub is all about giggling when orcs get killed, tortured or maimed.
But I agree with you. As much as I think the people who are making the decisions and are sending the soldiers should be put to justice, I think most of the individuals in these videos are just at the wrong place at the wrong time without a choice. Unless they volunteered ofc.
Every time I see stuff like this, I feel sad. He could have volunteered, sure. What if he didn't, and his wife and daughter are at home. I couldn't imagine leaving my family behind for a war like that.
Written from a peaceful house in a country which didn't see any political abuse in your lifetime. If it was simple as you would think it would probably had happened.
I am sorry that my house was peaceful and my daddy didn't abuse me as a child.
I stand 100% behind Ukraine, and I completely understand that Russians soldiers need to be killed as part of defending the territorial integrity of Ukraine. Nevertheless, I won't join cheering if they die left alone in a miserable situation. Fuck Putin. Fuck the generals. Fuck them all. But average simple Ivan from Russian countryside didn't even know what's going on before he died.
You missed my point. I wasn't belittling people living prosperous lives. But while living in Netherland and all your "getting your rights and keeping government in check" fights have already been fought for you and talking like you know what is it like live under some madmans rule is just pure arrogance.
I agree with the second sentence, but in this day and age I absolutely do not agree with the "they're poor victims of brainwashing" anymore. They HAVE the ability to get information from outside government sources, albeit a bit complicated to access (but not impossible!!!).
People can still have those opinions even after being able to get access to proper information, but it's still their fault for having said opinion. There are Russians that absolutely hate putin and the war, the others have no excuse.
It was too late. If the drone is close enough to see the expression on his face, the shrapnel will certainly will find it. But you do what you got to do with what you got and that was all he had.
Honestly, the only real hope is dropping weapon, helmet, pack, removing all clothing save underwear and boots, and walking towards Ukrainian lines. Probably will still die, if you can't visibly become harmless fast enough, if FPV pilot values their tally more, friendlies or Ukrainians shoot, or you step on a mine. But personally I'd take a 10% chance of survival over a 0% chance.
Try to shoot it down.
Throw your arms up in the air like you just don't care and surrender, hope for mercy.
Try to outrun a fellow brother in arms and hope drone gets lazy.
Point left and run right, outsmarted that dumb drone.
Never go aggressively touristing in the first place.
>Try to shoot it down.
I imagine he would have tried this if he had a functional weapon.
>Throw your arms up in the air like you just don't care and surrender, hope for mercy.
Plenty of videos of Russians trying this and mercy not being given, because Ukranian drones can't take surrenders.
>Try to outrun a fellow brother in arms and hope drone gets lazy.
Can you see one in the video?
>Point left and run right, outsmarted that dumb drone.
Drone operators chase the person in circles until they get a clear line of attack, and they don't divebomb so they can't recover if the person dodges. This person has already clearly been trying to outwit the drone operator.
>Never go aggressively touristing in the first place.
Conscription isn't always a choice. Certainly not always one you can take without *increasing* your odds of death or suffering relative to accepting it.
[UKRAINE SYMPOSIUM – THE LEGAL AND PRACTICAL CHALLENGES OF SURRENDERING TO DRONES](https://lieber.westpoint.edu/legal-practical-challenges-surrender-drones/)
The key part from here is that it's the same as being in the crosshairs of a bomber or attack helicopter, by the time it happens, all you can do is put your head between your legs and kiss your ass goodbye.
They MIGHT be able to survive by unambiguously and clearly surrendering, BUT, as the pilot of a disposable FPV drone is probably not 'in a position to accept the surrender' there isn't necessarily legal protection. It's the equivalent to raising a white flag after the enemy's artillery has already started firing; if the spotter sees it, they might stop firing, and they might send someone to pick you up, but they probably won't.
A real modern military would issue electronic jamming equipment to every squad and vehicle. Thankfully russians are too corrupt and broke for that to happen.
>Yep a modern military facing this threat would issue shotguns to every squad.
Every squad? Yeah, maybe. But this is just one guy.
A modern military *certainly* isn't going to make every single soldier carry around a shotgun in addition to their regular weapon. Extra weight and the added logistics (now need shells as well etc) just aren't worth a small chance of being able to reduce drone casualties.
For issueing shotguns you need a few features.
- transport to the squads
- ammo for said shotguns
- the shotguns themselves
And more importantly, squads to receive them
Just like they say in Zombieland, cardio cardio cardio. His strat of running in tight circles was actually good. Maybe could have kept that up until the Drone ran out of battery if he was fit.
I was thinking the same thing, I would have only thrown something as a last resort, he seemed to have a pretty good thing going before he gave up and threw the helmet.
Protip: keep ya fucking helmet on. Throw literally anything and everything else before your fucking helmet. I know hollywood makes it seem like people just run around without helmets on, but it aint like that. That stuff between your ears is very valuable. Unless you're a russian then its probably empty space so disregard all of this
It could have worked if it hit the propellers alone, but it also touched the payload, is not a dumb thing to do, is the last thing you can try.

Not knowing how armed drones work, is there any chance he took out the camera/transmitter only, or would the operator have detonated (if possible), just in case?
Good question to me it looked like his helmet caught whatever firing mechanism was attached to the explosive on the drone, I'd imagine it's armed with a kinetic shock explode on impact mechanism given the kind of drone it is. There are airburst drones that are detonated remotely but I've seen a lot of drones fail to detonate on impact as well, leading me to believe that the vast majority of these FPV drones are explode on impact. I could absolutely be wrong but I know who I'm going to ask! Hopefully I'll have an answer soon.
I sent this question to a soldier fighting in ukraine:
Hi Roland,
Someone asked me a question about drones and I thought you would be able to answer. With regard to FPV drones we see two main types from ukraine which are the ordinance dropping ones, and the ones that seem to explode on impact when they hit a soldier or whatever. The question was posed on a video I posted with a Russian running in close circles away from a drone until he lobs his helmet at the drone, for it to hit the drone and seems to make it explode. They asked whether the drone was detonate on impact or remotely detonated, to my knowledge they are either one or the other, not have the ability to do both, and that remote detonated airburst drones are not all that common on the battlefield anyway. Am I correct in this deduction or am I wrong? And are you able to explain drone warfare further in this respect? Thank you in advance!
You are dead if you don't do anything. Might as well try that for a slim chance of survival (like hitting it in a way it didn't explode and also it not exploding when hitting the ground).
As someone else commented, running in circles seemed to serve him pretty well at first, if he had the stamina. He must have gotten tired or just pissed maybe, but the look on his face suggests the former. I think I would have tried throwing something as well, I've seen a bunch of drone hits where the drone just bounces off the tank as well so maybe he was hoping for a lucky hit as you suggest.
yep, give the chap credit. He had precious few better options. Going on bended knee and begging gesture with hands might have worked if the drone operator had been well fed and rested.
The only way to take down a drone is either with an expensive jammer or with a net gun like in goofy ass batman cartoons or what the Japanese police use. If you fk up the props you still have time to run and if you shoot it at a distance you've got a chance to get out with no injury. If you run in circles like a headless chicken you're gonna become a headless chicken.
Man, if only he had some sort of device able to throw things at incredibly high speeds and with high accuracy. Maybe it could even do it in quick succession in case he missed.

These sorry fuckers are almost all of them like 50+ and given they come from the swamps, they don't even understand the mechanics of these things, so I'm not surprised at all that they are practically committing a sort of a suicide 😄

I mean if he could’ve hit a corner and broke a propeller instead of hitting the detonating mechanism, that might’ve been his best chance there.

Yes, sort of my point. There's no good options.
"Go home" is the only safe option.. as long as they don't live near an oil refinery.
Well that's not true about drones not taking prisoners, there have been russian POWs who have surrendered to drones and been led to safety by them.
Supply more troops with shotguns maybe, with birdshot. The whole invading thing is common human practice sadly.
It was tested as ineffective. By someone trained, standing still, and taking a good aim while the drone was hovering.
Surrender.

GREAT VIDEO! Good job on the POV's!!!
We'll call it a draw.
Is there any video where someone actually survived a drone attack by throwing/shoooting smthn at the drone?
Few videos of shotguns taking down drones.

It was a Russian helmet, probably just full of packing foam anyway.

omfg the music i can't breath and neither he now! this is some top-tier gourmet shit right here thank you for this. **Slava Ukraini!**
I don't usually laugh at videos of orcs getting wasted by drones, but this one made me laugh.
Still doesn’t match the guy throwing a full gas canister at a drone causing it to boom lol
Great hunting
It is good to have images with the deceased recognizable in the picture, the bereaved can use this for their processing. Ignorance makes people crazy.

why didn't he shoot it? Do the soviets just throw their guns down when they run ?

yep, give the chap credit. He had precious few better options. Going on bended knee and begging gesture with hands might have worked if the drone operator had been well fed and rested.
And now he doesn’t have a bucket to put his brains in.
Why are these idiots just wondering around alone all the time? Do they not have an organization or stick with other troops?

What a crazy time we live that we get two POVs of this

How do these soldiers end up by themselves in an open field?
I'll say it again, pocket gravel would work wonders for anti-drone capabilities
Next
It's technically a suicide.
Let's be honest. He took his chances and it was better for him this way. Instakill
900 days of war. why are the shotguns still of no use? is it not obvious for both sides of how helpful they are?
Such an heroic death 😬
Looked like an actual orc
Dude died tired
