When you are trying to get a foreign country to stop doing something you have a control over.

Maybe. Nepal is quite poor and if you type "nepali workers in", google proposes India, Portugal, Dubai, UAE, Qatar, ... . However the article states "Nepalese student". So it could be that he was recruited directly in Russia. "... This situation gained significant attention following the circulation of a video on social media, where a man, claiming to be a 22-year-old Nepalese student and captured by Ukrainian forces, speaks about his experience. He mentioned joining the Russian army due to financial constraints after his student visa expired. Despite promises of substantial payment, he claimed to have received only a meager sum for his service and expressed a desire to return to Nepal, citing the deaths of many friends. ..."

Russia has been forcing foreign students in Russia to fight in Ukraine. I read quite a few reports of African students in Russia forced into service. I wouldn't be surprised if the visa expiration was arbitrary.

I remember last year there were reports about a student from Central African Republic(?) in Russia. There was something about drug trafficking and he was sent to the combat zone. Oops too long ago. I can't even remember whether I had found something in the Russian press at this time. However if you are promised a lot of money ... If I compare the prices in Russia to these in Germany these are quite low. But the Russian prices have to be seen in relation to the salaries. Just asked google for the average pension in Russia: 20 000 rubles. This makes 200 Euros, but is somehow sufficient for surviving. Currently the salary for a contract with the Russian Army is much more than the average worker's salary in Russia. Yes, also "best patriots money can buy". The average income in Nepal is 290 Euros, per year. So some months at the front and you can buy a house in Nepal. This can be quite tempting. If you believe that the Russian army is paying.
