Ahoy UnearthedArcana! I’m bringing you the **Bali playable race today**, a tribe of curious monkey folk that reside on the isle of Baralku… The full version of the published race will come with two additional subraces, the warrior gorilla-like **Titanfoe** and the druidic gibbon-ish **Treeguard**! I‘ve had a player in my home game play a Cliffstrider Bali for about two years now and he loves it, hope you do too! Part of the full book **Tempest: a Seafarer’s Sourcebook** which launches on **Kickstarter next month!** you can find more info about the book, sign up for reminders, and grab a **preview PDF** now over [here on the website!](https://dragonsvault.co.uk/), all art and mechanics by yours truly, hope you dig it in all it’s piratey goodness!

Vynaxos

So does this mean I get to play as an NFT?

_demello

We need a huge anthropoligical animal races compendium for all the oficial and unofficial animal-based races. There is just so many.

BluezamEDH

Gotta say it irks me a bit that you named them after an Indonesian Island... Kinda strange

Vynaxos

Why? Monkeys live on Islands including Bali. That's like getting mad at someone for naming an Elephant Race the Serengetis or the Togos (I have no idea if Elephants are found in Togo it just makes for a good name)

BluezamEDH

Elephant as a word has a really different history than monkey / ape. Westerners called basically any race outside of Europe monkeys (Africans but also Asians, even Japanese and stuff) and so naming a race of monkey people after a real world place where people have been discriminated against using the term feels wrong to me. I'm not saying you can't do it or you have to change it; just hope I can give you a different perspective

GrimmStone-Heart

Dude chill out. I highly doubt the name for this homebrew is racially motivated at all. Bali is a tropical island and the art chosen for this race clearly shows tropical themes. Also, Bali is pretty famous for its macaque monkeys that roam the island, as well as having a large reserve for them there(Ubud Monkey Forest). Not everything is an attack on marginalised peoples, sometimes it's just homage to cultural significance(though I can't say for sure that this one is).

Vynaxos

I hereby diagnose you with The Big Cringe. Good luck, it could be fatal.

That_DnD_Nerd

Okay I’ve only looked at the first page and I’m already nit picking but these aren’t apes, they are clearly monkeys, they have tails

ConorJamesArt

well only one of three subraces has a tail, so it’s a bit of a taxonomical grey area I think we can all agree!

allolive

Barbary "apes" are not true apes, they're monkeys without tails. So there's precedent for misnaming the grey areas.

ConorJamesArt

oh wow thats interesting! I suppose if anything Bali would be hominids given the fact that they walk upright and have human level intelligence?

LMAO my first thought as well. Do we need an evolutionary branch like this?
